This summer, the British scene shines with three artists hailing from the Isle of Wight, Sheffield, and Bristol: Wet Leg, Pulp, and in the realm of reissues, Portishead.
Wet Leg
Two years ago, Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers’ band captured global attention with their debut self-titled album. On Moisturizer, Rhian Teasdale steps up with more confidence in both writing and performance, embracing her queer identity and creating direct rock music. They collaborated with producer Dan Carey, known for his work with Franz Ferdinand, Sia, and The Kills.

Pulp
The year’s most remarkable comeback belongs to the band led by the effortlessly stylish Jarvis Cocker, who has a unique way of expressing England’s heartaches and romantic troubles. From the opening track Spike Island to the more reflective ending of Partial Eclipse, More is Pulp’s finest album since Different Class, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Common People forever, and God save Jarvis!

Portishead
In 2008, eleven years after their second album, expectations from the Bristol trio had dwindled. Then came the mesmerizing and genre-defying Third, now reissued as a double vinyl in a gatefold sleeve. Disregarding any trip-hop labels, it stands uniquely. With Geoff Barrow as the multi-instrumentalist and Adrian Utley on guitar, Beth Gibbons captivates with her vocals right from the stark, stunning opening of Silence, and further into the spiraling masterpiece, The Rip.
Third, Island.
