The goal is unmistakably ambitious yet challenging: to restore at least 20% of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, following an agreement at the Montreal COP biodiversity summit in 2022. The European regulation on nature restoration, which was adopted in June 2024, mandates that each member state create its own restoration plan.
As part of this initiative, the Ministry of Ecological Transition initiated a public consultation on May 23, inviting French citizens to contribute to the development of this plan. “This plan will enable France to set an ambitious course for the restoration of degraded natural habitats,” the government stated. This includes wetlands, moorlands, forest environments, and agro-pastoral settings.
The consultation will continue until August 23. It seeks input from citizens on what actions they believe should be taken to restore degraded nature. Additionally, conferences and debates will be organized locally to further discuss these issues. Information about these events can be found on the ministry’s website.

“The goal of the consultation is to encourage every citizen to consider the biodiversity issues in their local area and to participate in discussions about the priorities that need to be addressed,” the government further added.
