The Sophs Drop Hot New Single “Death in the Family”: Listen Now!

By Tyler Jenkins

The Sophs revient avec leur deuxième single, “Death in the Family”

The California-based band has released a new single, two months after “Sweat” and their signing with Rough Trade Records. It’s a vulnerable confession about shame and self-sabotage.

Less than two months ago, The Sophs burst onto the scene. Following the release of Sweat, a debut single that echoes Julian Casablancas and The Strokes, they are back with their second track: Death in the Family. This morbidly titled song gives us a glimpse into the mind of lead singer Ethan Ramon.

With a gritty backing created by intense guitar and bass distortion, we delve into the intimate thoughts of the frontman who admits he’d rather deal with the loss of a loved one than his own actions. In the music video, this sentiment is amplified by the gradual disappearance of each band member, culminating with Ethan Ramon himself. This unusual confession comes as the singer moves away from his previous self-destructive tendencies, as explained in his press release.

In his statement, he makes a candid admission: “It’s a confrontation with my complicated relationship with shame, and the fact that at one point, I had convinced myself I would rather lose someone close than take responsibility. Releasing this song feels like purging those thoughts. Maybe it’s because I finally feel like I can express myself clearly. Maybe I feel protected by my vulnerability. All I know is that it means something.”

Promising Musical Debuts

This track follows the release of their first single, in which the group had already dared to expose difficult, raw, and ironically honest thoughts. They had then signed with Rough Trade Records (home to Dean Blunt, The Strokes, Pulp), a label known for its specialty in indie rock, from post-punk to garage rock and even folk, though not limited to these genres.

The release of this new song was not done in isolation, as tour dates have been added to their European tour. Additionally, they will perform free shows at Los Angeles’ Scribble and at two New York dates this month, before settling down for an evening at Supersonic Records in Bastille on September 8th.
