« DeKalb Commission to Consider Bicycle Bridge Over I-285 on PATH Trail Downtown Decatur Named Top 10 Neighborhood in US by American Planning Association »

our kids have been torturing the wife of a friend for years.
“hey, Siri, what’s the square root of poopoo kaka?”
http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/04/tech/mobile/bennett-siri-iphone-voice/index.html?hpt=te_t1
Does anyone else find the intersection of College/Howard/McDonough to be a complete disaster. Could the lights be timed any worse as you cross College and Howard? And would it not improve traffic flow substantially to have left turn signals both ways on Howard?
Just a thought.
Take it up with DeKalb Traffic Engineering, who. IMO, couldn’t program a toaster.
Of course it’s a mess. You have two east-west routes intersecting with a north-south road and the railroad. Pretty difficult to engineer anything there.
Do you mean add a left turn lane on Howard going westbound? It’s a one-way road there and the PATH sidewalk complicates adding more roadway. How much traffic uses Howard westbound there anyway? I’m seriously asking as I avoid that intersection as much as possible.
There is a good deal of traffic going west on Howard at McDonough. The good news is that, if there are no cars in front of you and you’re not turning left, the “long” signal is green for Howard to go straight across and continue on Howard.
Sorry – meant left turns off of College on to McDonough
College in both directions has dedicated left turn lanes to McDonough St.
Do you mean dedicated turn signal lights? I think there are just the single green lights without the turn arrows now.
yes – left turn signal
Ah, sorry. I misread earlier. I like left turn signals. Not sure why they aren’t at every intersection with a dedicated lane…
+1 for the turn signals, especially if there is a dedicated lane. We could use one at Candler and College also. Both McDonough and Candler are major arteries into Oakhurst from College, and as far as turning left during rush hour and after school hours, both intersections are accidents waiting to happen.
I have never understood why there aren’t left turn signals at those intersections. At certain times of day I have learned to take an alternate route ( and then curse at myself when I forget)
This intersection has never bothered me but I don’t travel through it on a daily basis. In the past, I enjoyed being stopped by a train at this crossing. Waving to a conductor, and getting a wave back, is something that makes living in Decatur worth it. I guess you could say I have low expectations.
So why is that you don’t ever see this quality praised by the “I Love Everything About Decatur” cheerleaders?
I need an estimate on attic insulation in an existing house. Who has a recommendation?
I just got mine done with Northwest Exterminating. They were professional and prompt, but the price seemed a little steep to me. Probably worth investigating at least.
Also just used northwest with similar experience, but I had to have rodent clean up too. Used Wilson insulation at previous home.
I recommend putting a want ad up on Craigslist, if you are looking for a deal. People will contact you to give you an estimate, instead of you chasing them down.
Is there a good small gas or 2-stroke engine ( lawn mower, trimmer, edger) repair shop in the close-in Decatur-Avondale -L5P area?
In the past I have taken such things to sears at mountain industrial, but would be willing to try someone closer to home.
Does Intown Hardware fix items there or do they send that stuff out. If they send it out, who do they use?
Intown Ace doesn’t repair, but they referred me to a place on L’ville Highway just on this side of Tucker. Mower Menders maybe for a lawnmower. I believe American Chainsaw is an authorized Stihl repair shop.
TLC small engine repair on College near Sun in My Belly. They did a good gob on my lawn mower
Agreed. I just picked up my blower yesterday and they have it running like a top. They actually look to have a decent firewood business going as well and I’m going back to pick up a truckload.
+1 to TLC
Mr. Grimes, has tiny little shop near the Waffle House in Avondale. Not open every day, so call first. First-rate repair & maintenance on small engines.
I know others have had a good experience with Grimes. However, not me. He could not get my Ryobi weed wacker working correctly.
We have had good luck with Mr. Grimes as well.
I have had great success with Mr. Grimes. He is superb at explaining to my teenager what things we could be doing better to prevent repairs.
Another fan of Mr. Grimes. Three mowers repaired so far.
I used to give Mr, Grimes a lot of business,
Then I got tired of the annual rituai and bought a corded electric mower.
Then I got tired of dealing with a yard and moved to a condo in Decatur.
Grimes is good. Limited hours, but I don’t blame him!
2-cycle engines have become the bane of my existence. The ethanol in today’s corn-gas clogs up the carbs. You need fresh gas with added stabilizer. Ideally run the thing dry after use (that’s not happening but some tools will let you pinch the fuel line. Drain the gas over the winter or kiss it goodbye.
I’m not a mechanic, but clever enough to locate replacement carbs on Amazon, pull the old one off and add a new one. Less money than paying someone to clean the old.
You can buy pre-mixed oil and gas at hardware stores. Costs more but does not have the ethanol which is the main problem.
Anyone doing anything for furloughed gov’t employees?
We’ve got quite a few in Decatur, including some families in which both adults are now on indefinite leave.
I’d love to do something to help.
Do whatever you want to do for the Fed employees. Just remember that in each of these cases in the past, the workers got paid for the “shut-down”. i.e. this became another paid vacation for them. Our tax dollars at work.
our politicians at work.
Not happening this time.
That is just the rhetoric. Whenever the clowns on both sides stop posturing and let everyone get back to work, it will include back-pay.
yep
I hope you are right. But I hate hearing that this is some kind of vacation. Watching Congress act like fools while your livelihood hangs in the balance is no vacation.
How many weeks could you go without a paycheck? Through no fault of your own? What if it was your family’s sole income? And you had kids and a mortgage? It is cold comfort to hear that you might get paid eventually. Maybe.
I’d put money on it not happening. The government shutdown this time is way different from that of 1995 so I don’t think what happened then predicts what will happen this time. Thousands of federal workers have already been on intermittent unpaid furlough already for months and months with no hope of being paid for that time. We’ll see. No one in Congress or in the top echelons of government are on furlough so it’s no skin off their backs if tons of blue collar, middle class, and upper middle class (does that really exist anymore?) folks lose thousands of dollars of pay.
I think you’re right about it being different than ’95. I don’t remember the GOP making an issue of a specific law back then. I happen to think the ACA is a bad law in many ways, but to demand it be changed in this manner is dangerous, as many Republicans realize (about half, in the polls I’ve seen). Instead of working to make it better when they had the chance, they chose ideological purity and obstruction, banking on a win in 2012 that didn’t happen.
Now the law is mostly operable, and they’re trying a hail Mary that is doomed to fail. At least Boehner has indicated he’ll allow a vote on the debt ceiling without Republican support, or we’d be looking at a serious ****storm in a few weeks
“Instead of working to make it better when they had the chance”
Exactly when was this? This law was railroaded through a Democrat controlled Congress. H*ll, the bill was incomplete when it was passed.
And please don’t interpret that comment as support for the shutdown. It isn’t.
(And obstruction isn’t a tactic used solely by Republicans.)
They could have offered modifications when the law was being debated, but mostly chose to just say no or propose delay (obviously hoping to delay until Dems no longer controlled both chambers). And then when they gained control of the House in 2010, they could have offered compromise legislation instead of numerous votes for total repeal, which had no chance of going anywhere. And it’s uniquely ironic that their last hope was pinned on a Romney win, the one candidate who just a few years ago was extolling the Republican virtues of an individual mandate for health insurance, the very idea that the Republicans are now seeking to delay in exchange for keeping the government running.
And please don’t interpret this as support for the ACA, which, as I mentioned earlier, I think is a bad law.
Nice. Here’s what furloughed employees do know for sure
1. No idea how long it will last
2. No guarantee of any pay for lost time. (And for sure no pay for the 6 days lost to the Sequester earlier this year)
3. Bills will have to be paid on time
But don’t mind me. Smug fits you like a glove.
seems like congress and obama have agreed to pass a bill to pay furloughed workers.
Documentation please. Everything I read indicates that such a bill has been introduced (or whatever the correct term is) but no one expects it to pass. I don’t pretend to understand the byzantine process by which a bill becomes law, but I know that it takes a lot more than introducing it.
If federal workers had to be paid retroactively, there would be more incentive for folks to end the impasse. Every day of shutdown would incur salary costs without a commensurate amount of work produced. The way it stands now, simplistic thinkers can assert that the shutdown will reduce the deficit. Never mind the financial, political, and international impacts.

I’m just a bill, yes I’m only a bill
And I’m sittin’ here on Capitol Hill…
Couldn’t resist
As far as I am aware, there is no bill to pay the furloughed workers, and looking at the news, no one thinks it’s a sure thing. Federal workers on furlough are eligible for unemployment benefits just like anyone whose business is subject to a temp shut down.
http://www.dol.state.ga.us/js/regular_unemployment_insurance.htm
Benefits are not retroactive, you must file for it now. If Congress pays back wages, then I believe it is deducted from your pay (or perhaps you have to pay it back, not sure how that will work.)
Those who won’t be ultimately made whole by back pay are people who depend on federally funded programs on a day-to-day basis and have been left high and dry, i.e., the families with no child care alternatives while their Head Start facility is padlocked. I’m sure there are myriad other examples. Maybe there are ways to support them.
From the Atl Community Food Bank newsletter: What Does the Government Shutdown Mean for ACFB?
The Atlanta Community Food Bank is still open and distributing food to our partner agencies for those in need, but we are preparing for an increase in need that may come from the halt in funding for USDA programs such as WIC (Women, Infants, Children), CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Nutrition Program) and TEFAP (The Emergency Food Assistance Program). SNAP (Food Stamps) continues to be funded this month, though deep cuts still loom.
The Atl Community Food Bank’s latest letter predicts an uptick in demand for their food/services related to the shutdown in WIC and other programs.
Meanwhile, federal employees *should* get a paycheck next week for hours worked before the shutdown, but if the various payroll offices did not get it done, they may not. And, as stated elsewhere, unless Congress decides to pay feds for this furlough, then they will not be paid for these days in addition to any other furlough days they have had this year. There are plenty of low wage grade feds out there who already live paycheck to paycheck. The food bank would be a good bet if you want to help people affected by the shutdown.
If you don’t have plans for tomorrow, here is where you need to be…

Has anyone looked at the proposed legislation regarding bicycles? Per Peach Pundit:
State Representatives Carl Rogers (R-Gainesville), Lee Hawkins (R-Gainesville) and Emory Dunahoo (R-Gainesville) will host a public hearing on House Bill 689 Monday, October 7, 2013 from 6:00p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Hall County Government Center. House Bill 689 would make changes to laws governing the operation and use of bicycles in the state of Georgia. . . . . This is the only public hearing scheduled to discuss this legislation. Members of the public interested in this bill are encouraged to attend.
Among other things, the bill would require the registration of bicycles, it would requires cyclists to ride single file with not more than four riders in each single-file line, and it allows the Department of Transportation and local governing authorities to “restrict persons from riding bicycles on the roadway or designate certain times when bicycle riding is permissible.”
Achtung, citizen! This public space is not for your use!
that’s R-freedom from gov’t intrusion into our lives right there.
How can you have an “intrusion” when talking about permissible uses for PUBLIC spaces?
how about we go with “hooray! more gov’t regulations!”?
“It is highly unlikely this bill will even make it to a floor vote in the House, and we know it has no chance of passing the Senate. HB 689 is not the law and has not been voted on by any legislator.
Thanks to Georgia Bikes, you have a lobbyist representing your interests and keeping a close eye on bills like this that impact your rights and safety.”
http://georgiabikes.org/index.php/blog/322-hb-689-anti-cycling-legislation
Thanks for this Jeff. As I was reading the above, I thought, ‘there’s no way in hell three Yahoos from Gainesville can ram this through the house, let alone the senate.’
We already have enough legislation when it comes to bikes!
Never underestimate what horrors GA legislators are capable of…
+1
I’d be all for it if it helped to corral rogue cyclists who break traffic laws. I was in SC a few weeks back and there was a story on the local news about a bicyclist who was killed when he ran a stop sign.
seriously, imagine if a car broke a law and someone ended up dead. i mean, it’s not like you see cars speeding ever, or making less than a full stop at a stop sign, or not using blinkers, or killing pedestrians, or driving distracted, or causing accidents that kill people on a regular basis.
I saw a cyclist getting a ticket on McDonough, just N of Oakview earlier this week… Im guessing it was for running the stop sign there.
I was cut off by a mom on a bike this morning with one of those baby trailers, and then watched her roll though a stop sign. I went from dunbfounded to pissed (that I almost hit her and her children through no fault of my own) to relieved when I caught up to her at the next intersection and realized it was empty.
Would registration of her bike or a single-file rule have prevented that? As a vehicle on the road, she is already subject to laws and could have (and probably should have) been ticketed for her actions. The proposed law would not have helped one bit.
Registration may enable the police to identify her (cyclists often don’t carry ID), or at least the owner of the bike. Increased enforcement of traffic laws on cyclists may help change behavior of cyclists who routinely ignore these regulations, which would make the roads safer for everyone. I am not saying I support this regulation, but, yes, it may help prevent such a future occurence.
“cyclists often don’t carry ID” really? is that so their next of kind can’t be contacted when they’re run over by a car?
you do realize that “cyclists” are not some separate class of people, no? they’re a lot like everyone else. they have jobs, they have houses, they have cars, they have cell phones, they have keys, they have credit cards and health insurance cards and money they usually keep in a wallet, with their driver’s license.
kin, not kind.
And we all want to get where we’re going alive.
Based on some of my observations of a select few cyclists, I am not sure that is an accurate statement. Vast majority? Maybe. All? Not convinced. Of course the same can be said about drivers.
Holy sh!t, I learned something today. I always thought cyclists were teleported here from Uranus just to bother motorists, and once they met their daily quota they were beamed back. It never, and I mean never, occurred to me that they were people like you (presuambly) and me with lives, loved ones, jobs and homes.
your comments sure make it seem like you think of them as a separate class of people. for example, your most of them don’t carry id comment, or how they’re mostly reckless law breaking maniacs putting safe drivers in danger.
not that you specifically said they were reckless blah blah…, but that’s the general impression i get from your comments.
I re-read my post and ackonwledge that I could have been clearer that I think the subset of cyclists “who routinely ignore” traffic laws is the minority. But, I never said “most” don’t carry ID.
“Registration may enable the police to identify her (cyclists often don’t carry ID)”
How do you know that cyclists often don’t carry ID?
Bunch of good ol boys who wouldn’t know exercise if it hit them in the head.
+ 1 Or education.
Who want their four gaps free of spandex-wearing hippies.
Things have gotten a little bit out of hand on the roads of north Georgia with some deliberate harrassement of bicyclists by drivers. My wife was nearly hit by a truck driver who cut her off on a descent of Neil’s Gap. I’m sure the Sheriff hears from lots of us who are legally using the roads there while these reps are just “representing their constituents”. Hope their arrogant attitude can be improved, but I’m concerned that this just adds fuel to the fire. The implied and actual dangerous behavior has clearly escalated in the last several years.
Considering where those legislators are from (Gainesville has a large Hispanic population), it’s not completely unreasonable to interpret this as partly an anti-immigrant bill. In areas with large Hispanic populations, there is a lot of bike commuting (and I’d guess many are non-choice riders).
I am going out on a limb here, but I don’t think so. My observation is that people who commute to work by bicycle ride solo. The proposed rules would clear the roads on the six gaps so that drivers are not inconvenienced as they climb them.
By the way, thousands of bike riders travel from all over the world to ride these splendid mountain roads. The local Chamber of Commerce rakes in a fortune every year (around this time) by sponsoring a 100-mile ride there. You’d think the tourist dollars would be more welcomed but frankly, there are still some rough characters in that area and this bill implies that they are becoming less tolerant of cyclists’ activities.
“there are still some rough characters in that area” – Thank goodness I got out of there while I could!
If it’s only about multiple riders, then why the registration proposal?
i’m assuming the multiple riders thing is to discourage people who would register from riding, and the registration thing is to discourage people from riding period. a king of ‘okay, we can’t completely take away your right to use the public roads, but we’re gonna make it as hard as possible for you to do it and limit the ways in which you can do it.’
Registration = fees = revenue.
Maybe they are proposing a new category of operator on the Georgia Driver’s License for adult bicyclists, like motorcyclists, cab drivers, bus and truck drivers, who qualify to operate that class of vehicle. A simple “rules of the road” quiz would do it.
I am not in favor of registering bicycles per se because most cyclists have several if not a collection of bicycles. Maybe a “license” could be issued and transferable from bike to bike.
Proposers may envision a little metal plate with numbers that attaches to the seat, which any adult cyclist would be totally embarrassed to have on “their” bicycle. Plus it would increase wind resistance, the bane of bike riders. On the other hand, think of the vanity plate possibilities.
Agree that it sounds like a revenue move, but it’s probably simple harassment like the rest of this tacky proposal.
Papers, please!
Tacky, or genius proposal? Maybe this is some annoyingly brilliant move to get more people on bikes up there, because that’s probably what’s likely to happen at least in the short term. Since this idiotic bill is going nowhere and they’re getting nothing but great PR for their pristine rides and roads, they couldn’t have planned a better free bike tourism campaign if they tried.
One of the sponsors responded to an email sent by a local cycling activist and his justification sounded like constituent complaints about recreational riders
Sorry, that’s completely unreasonable. It is an effort to keep cyclists off the roads so cars can get places quicker, specifically in the mountains.
“Sorry, that’s completely unreasonable. It is an effort to keep cyclists off the roads so cars can get places quicker, specifically in the mountains.”
Then why the registration proposal?
I have no idea. Ask the idiot politicians who introduced the law. They probably wouldn’t give you a straight answer.
But I can tell you – from first hand experience – this is about cyclists who use the roads to train on. It is not about immigration.
So, are you saying that cyclists should be allowed to form large packs and impede traffic on mountain roads where there is rarely an alternate route available to motorists?
They are roads. They are a means of transportation by a “vehicle” as written in state law.
You gotta deal with tractors the same way. So simple answer is “Yes, you have to deal with other vehicles on public roads.” Of course, operators of vehicles should act courteous. That doesn’t always happen regardless of the type of vehicle.
No, I’m saying that motorists should respect the fact that cyclists have every right to be on the road. Just because there is a pack of cyclists doesn’t give a motorist the freedom to drive erratically and get within inches of a person on a bike who is going 15 – 20 mph against their 45 – 50.
If a group is purposefully impeding the flow of traffic and doesn’t yield or drop into a single file line, then yes it is the group’s fault. But riding on somebody’s back tire, honking a horn, and flipping the bird doesn’t make a cyclist want to move over any more than it would make a driver want to move over.
Both groups can peacefully coexist. Drivers need to remember that a cyclists are human beings. And cyclists need to be respectful of the rules of the road.
Maybe these legislators should introduce a bill for patience and common sense.
I certainly could be wrong about this, but I believe some of the increase in the number of cyclists on the road in metro Atlanta can be attributed to the increase in MARTA fares. I’m especially thinking of the Buford Hwy area around Chamblee and Doraville, where I see lots of adult men riding what I would consider kids bikes. These are clearly not “choice riders ” (or, I guess the choice is between five dollars per round trip on a bus versus free ), and many of them have trouble maintaining a lane and speed (and too many use the sidewalk).
I agree with what you say. I will add that as an enthusiastic but slower cyclist, I sometimes feel threatened by aggressive cyclists in groups, and on occasion someone has been rude to me, yelling for me to get over to the right when I’m already as far over on the right as I feel I can safely be. That said, this bill is ridiculous and mean, and I’m sure it has no chance to go anywhere during the session.
So I have to register the new bike I buy my for kid?
I don’t get the feeling this legislation is coming from a safety standpoint. Feels more like rules from the “I have to register my car and pay for roads, so why don’t we register bikes?” crowd.
Does any other state regulate bicycles?
A recent analysis determined that Georgia is far and away the most expensive state to own a car. I’d guess that means there are a lot of vested interests who want to limit the alternatives to doing so, with the auto dealership lobby being the leading one. Perhaps this bike legislation is but a small example of that.
No, this has to do with resentment on the part of some people who drive on north Georgia roads, mostly local residents. Many dislike the fact that cyclists are on the scenic mountain pass roads.
The county where these gaps are located has arbitrarily imposed a “law” that cyclists shall ride single file on those roads. Laws proposed here would impose this law state-wide, break up groups of riders (into no more than four riders). The intent of imposing these laws is to make it difficult for groups of cyclists to travel on the roadways.
Common sense calls for single file while climbing on a bike. Some cyclists don’t get this and continue to ride two abreast at any speed. (Which is legal.) I think this is a red flag to some drivers and makes them pass agressively and express their anger by doing other stupid stuff.
This oneupmanship taking place between cyclists and drivers is unsafe in my opinion.
I think the key word you used in your post was “resentment”. Go to one of these meetings held in rural or semi-rural Republican districts (I’ve been to a few), and you will find lots of it. The motivating factor often isn’t pragmatism or even conservatism, but a resentful desire to attack anything perceived to be connected with liberals.
I read somewhere that crowding causes most problems. Clearly another example of a conflict in values.
“but a resentful desire to attack anything perceived to be connected with liberals.”
BINGO. There are votes and money to be gained by sticking it to liberals. This is, at least in part, a way to transfer city money to state coffers.
“This is, at least in part, a way to transfer city money to state coffers.”
Yep. That’s the Georgia way.
I would like to thank Decatur Metro’s “Best Nail Salon” post of a few months ago for informing me about Miss Nails next to Burnt Fork. Just went there and agree that it’s a great choice. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much, but inside it’s attractive, friendly, clean, and does great gel nails. I still like Viet Nails and still miss Nail World, but this is a great choice. It’s not open on Sundays so my choice of nail salon may now be dictated by the day of the week.
Agree– I love that place. I took my 7 year old along and they treated her like a queen.
Do they autoclave?
I went to the vitamin shop in Toco (one Sunday) a couple of months ago and decided to try Tony’s Nails, and they are great. Tammi does a great little massage for no extra charge (I made sure to tip extra of course.) She really doesn’t talk at all but the massage is fantastic and she does a great job.
Patch has an article on “Where Are the Homes Just Under $200,000?” It shows the southside of Decatur having fewer homes under $200,000 (5-7%) than the northside (10-12%). Boy have times changed!
And any house in Oakhurst being sold for under $200K in going to be torn down to leave room for a new $600K house anyway.
I predict that the McCraftsman craze is about to hit the northside next. Or whatever the equivalent is. Great Lakes had its McMansion phase, then Oakhurst its McCraftsman. Maybe NW Decatur will have a McBrick or McAsbestos Shingle phase.
It has already hit Sycamore Drive!
I always preferred the terms McBungsion and McBungshalow.
Same for the northside. We looked at buying one as a fixer upper/rental investment property, but a builder paid cash and closed in 14 days.
Come buy my house!
I had the same thing happen. Found some good deals to renovate and the next week they were off the market. Some were renovated very nicely but a couple were complete tear-downs, which I didn’t agree with. But I didn’t have cash on hand, so I can’t complain too much.
So, DawgFan, I have a townhouse for sale that may fit the bill if you are looking in Johns Creek (south end near Country Club of the South)…
So sad, but true. I love Decatur’s cute old little houses. It was one of the reasons we moved here.
I got all excited when I saw this article & forwarded it to a friend who is looking for a Decatur-area house in that price range. But, unfortunately the data that is used in the article is from 2011! Seriously? That info is way outdated & no longer even applies.
Don’t forget the DHS Band Yard Sale at Intown Ace Hardware, 1404 Scott Blvd. on Saturday, October 5th from 9 am to 3 pm. We have furniture, home furnishings, bikes, kids’ toys, books, and clothing to name a few things. Please come out and support the high school band students.
Thanks Tony and all the wonderful folks at Intown Ace!
Are the sheep still at the cemetary? For how much longer?
I was just there. They were there yesterday; gone today. Did a good job of eating.
saw them yesterday, too. Sure looked like goats to me. But I’m no country boy.
They were sheep with short haircuts.
Hope not.
Sheep go to heaven. Goats…
…go to hell.
And no, DM, I wasn’t telling Rival to go to hell. I was just finishing the lyrics.
Yeah!
Eating, bleating, pooping weeds. What the flock?
So I’ve eaten twice at Sobban so far and I have to say . . . oh wait, that’s not in Decatur. It is, however, within biking distance . . . never mind.
Are there any good/fun adult softball leagues in Decatur? I was looking online a bit and didn’t really find too much information.
Active Living (aka the Rec) has adult softball
Dang. And I was hoping for a day free of car vs. bicycle discussion. Oh well.
We should really focus on less controversial subjects, like the ACA, guns, unincorporated Decatur, McMansions, and the government shutdown.
So I got moderated (not sure why) and I didn’t receive the email to verify my address. I’m assuming it’s an NSA thing, so I’ll just let it go.
Same thing happened to me last week. Mine was because I was trying to delete a comment I made (I hit Submit and then saw that someone else had already made basically the same comment).
The Oakhurst Arts Run is a 5K run/walk coming up next Saturday Oct 12 in conjunction with the Decatur Arts Alliance Festival. It starts and finishes at Harmony Park. It is the second to last in the Grand Slam Series so come out and get healthy with us on a beautiful fall morning. Race starts at 8am. http://www.active.com/running/decatur-ga/oakhurst-arts-run-5k-2013
Has the name of that festival changed? It was the Oakhurst Art & Music Festival.
Thank you for clarifying. It’s the Oakhurst Arts Run 5K run/walk held in conjunction with the Oakhurst Arts & Music Festival which is “brought to you” by the Decatur Arts Alliance.
If any Decatur parents are looking for your pot smoking teens, you can find them in Decatur Cemetery near the Kroger fence. We stumbled upon a group whilst looking for the goats.
They used to hang out in the school bus lot next to Chick Fil A until they started locking the buses better. Supposedly, pot smoking, and to a lesser degree, other drug use, has become quite prevalent at DHS in recent years. I haven’t observed a lot but that means nothing. Drug dealing attracts other criminals because money is involved so not a good idea in this era of armed robberies in our fair city.
Winnona Park Stud would like to know where Decatur parents should look if they are trying to find pot-smoking Decatur parents? Asking for a friend.
Can anyone recommend a good plumber? Our leaky water heater needs to be replaced.
M. Carey & Daughters. Local and professional.
+1. May not be the least expensive, but local and established.
Thanks!
Hi everyone,
I’m writing to let you know about a GA DOT project that will impact our community. The GA DOT currently plans to move the driveway to Glennwood Elementary on E Ponce de Leon to make it align with Sycamore Place. The project was conceived when the building was used as the Fourth-Fifth Academy and the traffic was reportedly a nightmare. Thankfully, that is no longer the case. The project would have many negatives and no discernible positives from moving the driveway.
The Glennwood PTA and SLT are both opposed to the project. The lawyer for CSD is also involved, as the school system is deeply concerned about the impact of the project. We have spoken with many people at the GA DOT and expressed our concerns, but so far no commitments to revamping the project have been made.
There will be a meeting next week between the GA DOT, the City of Decatur, and City Schools of Decatur. I will also be attending the meeting as a representative of the Glennwood PTA. We would like to have the wider community’s support in opposing this project.
Please consider signing our petition to the GA DOT. This project will negatively affect all those who travel on East Ponce, not just COD residents or parents of Glennwood Elementary students. It is also a waste of all of Georgia residents’ tax dollars. More details can be found in the petition. I am also available to answer any questions.

Has anyone built a 4 season sunroom type thing? Who did you use as a builder?
Interesting scene this afternoon in Glen Lake Park. There were maybe 60 to 70 men and boys, who appeared to be of Pakistani or Indian origin, playing ball on the lower field. Not playing cricket, soccer, or other Near Eastern sport, but American flag football, complete with referees, timekeepers, “hurry up offense”, and a huge celebration in the final seconds of the game for the winning score.

Hi Decatur Metro Family,
I am moving to a 750 sf condo in the Decatur area. Looking for contractor that can handle all the details of a Condo remodel. The HOA has a list of dos and don’ts that control the process so as not to be a pain to my new neighbors. Totally understandable…..I’d want that as well.
Would prefer a team that has experience in Condos. Any recommedations would be appreciated!
Thanks
Hi Amy,
I don’t have any recommendations, but I’m sure someone out there in Decatur Metro-land does. It’s just that by Sunday evening, the FFAF traffic dies down. If you don’t get any responses this weekend, you might try re-posting your request this coming Friday on the next FFAF thread. Good luck!
Thanks Julie,
I will repost next Friday.

Was that a Rebel Yell at Glen Lake Park a few minutes ago or a Bulldawg Yell?
