Anybody know what was filming up in front of the old courthouse around lunch yesterday?
Anyone know who owns the red pick up truck that appears to have been abandoned at the corner of Forkner and Glen Court? It looks relatively new. It has been parked there for about a month creating a significant traffic hazzard for cars, bike rider, school buses and children because it makes it very difficult to turn onto or off of Glen Court on to Forkner. Also it is blocking someone’s mailbox, extremely rude to make the mailman have to get out every day to deliver the mail. I know rain, sleet etc, but still rude.
One would assume the Decatur Police have checked it out. Call them and ask to speak to the shift sergeant.
Has anyone used the new pediatric urgent care next to the Ace Hardware?
I’ve heard good things, but we haven’t had to use it ourselves yet.
Haven’t used them personally, but our neighbors did and they really liked it. I think it’s a Father/Daughter doctor team. Neighbors were very happy with them.
It gets rave reviews on various parent listservs but we haven’t had occasion to try it yet.
In addition to after hours/urgent care, they offer pediatric primary care. I have not tried them yet, but a neighbor who is an Emory nurse (and very picky about her pediatric provider) recently switched her kids from one of the larger pediatric practices to them for their primary care needs. She can’t say enough good things about them.
Nancyschmancy, I love your moniker– it appeals to my inner kindergartener!
Yes – several times unfortunately. They’ve been great. Highly recommend for non emergency visits when you can’t see your regular pediatrician.
We had to take our 2 year old (and her ruptured ear drum) and our 5 year old (with sympathetic ear “pain”) to CorrectMed on the day after New Years. They. Were. Awesome. Dr. Goo was a pediatric ER doc in the Emory system for a long time and he, his wife, and their daughter are the owners. He told us that his goal is to prevent unneeded trips to the ER just because your regular pediatrician is closed. They are set up to do just about everything except surgery, from breathing treatments to ear infections to broken bones and everything in between, and have the ability to consult with specialists if needed. We were really, really impressed. The facilities are brand spankin’ new and top of the line and the staff is really friendly and helpful. Plus, the parking is free! If I remember correctly, their urgent care hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. They also provide regular primary pediatric and adolescent medical care as well during more normal business hours. Highly, highly recommend!
Just chiming in a bit late to say that we have had several good experiences at CorrectMed. Dr. Goo and Dr. Doyle were great with my 4 year old, and the office staff is incredibly nice too. We had such a great experience with the urgent care there that we switched to them for our primary care. This is a small thing, but I love that they don’t have toys in their office to spread the germ love.
Same here. Loved Dr. Doyle so much after a couple of early-morning ear infections that we switched to her for primary care as well. She personally called to follow-up on my daughter. Office staff is very friendly; waiting area is super clean. Highly recommend!
We just used Correct Med (urgent care place) today on a whim as we were headed to Egelston. 2 year old with a dislocated elbow was seen in less than 20 minutes. I can’t recommend the place highly enough. Having a place like that open til 8pm Sat. and Sun. is so convenient.
Any recommendations for a violin/viola teacher? The potential student is 13 yrs old.
The violin professor at Agnes Scott, Qiao Chen Solomon, is an excellent violinist, but I’m not sure if she gives private lessons. If she doesn’t, she may know someone who does.
Guitar Decatur (across from Decatur High) has a violin teacher and a clarinet teacher as well as guitar lessons. Love them….
Guy at Dancing Goats told me the other day that they charge 35 cents extra for a paper cup if you’re getting it to go. Trying to encourage people to bring their own cups or stay and use one of theirs. I told him that I wanted to stay there but did not like the huge dog bowl cups, so he did not charge me the 35 cents for a paper cup.
I don’t plan on bringing my dishes when I go pay $8 for a latte and scone. And c’mon, 35 cents for a paper cup? After I’m already paying so much for the latte? I have been a loyal patron since they opened, but am now considering other options.
Or you could bring your own paper cup and make their heads explode!
Paging Portlandia, white telephone please!
You have every right to be miffed, I get coffee 3 or 4 times a week out and that is annoying. If it was covering the cost of the paper cup, perfectly fine, but the reasoning is ridiculous. I recycle mine that I get out when I can, but it’s really none of their business either way. If you don’t want people using them, don’t sell them, period. Not make extra money selling them.
At the MAC counter at Macy’s you can return your used cosmetics cases for a discount, maybe they should try a program like that if they’re overly concerned.
If a good community business makes a few cents trying to keep the earth cleaner, more power to them.
Sure it’s just a few extra cents, unless she get’s coffee 3 times a week in which case it’s about an extra fifty bucks a year, or $100 over 2 years. Merely for a paper cup to put the beverage she already purchased in.
While I’m sure that’s the reason they’d cite, it also assumes that the consumer can’t/won’t recycle the paper cup on their own. In Decatur, that’s not a good assumption. Seems more like a shameless attempt to cut overhead and thirty five cents for a paper cup is ludicrous.
Do any of you have an alley behind your house? Do you like it? Are there problems with unwanted people in your backyard?
We have been in Decatur a couple years now and finally have cleared our lot to the back. We just realized we have an abandoned alley back there. It would be neat to be able to use it. They seem to be common in the Lenox Point neighborhood we adjoin.
I inquired with the Decatur permitting guys and they were somewhat helpful, but did not have any definite answers about how you go about getting one back to useful condition. And, some people are using our alley for their yard. Does anyone know anything definite about alleys in Decatur? I see them in use and wonder who maintains them and what happens if the guy on the end decides he wants it for his personal driveway? Alleys seem like a neat way to keep these tiny streets clear of so many parked cars, and my kids would like to use ours for a shortcut when they walk to school or to the park.
Thanks in advance!
The official city position is, in a nutshell, that they washed their hands of them. In practice, they elected to stop using them and maintaining them and basically turned them over to the people that adjoin them.
Some people have co-opted their alleys as though they were an extension of their own property but, as their deeds will show, they’re not. They’re still separate and, in theory, you could challenge people who’ve taken them over to restore access to your yard. Not saying you’d win, but you could try.
I’ve heard tale that, after 7 years, people can claim ownership of their acquired alley. Don’t know if that’s true or not. There was one instance quite a few years ago on Olympic Place where people were using the alley to walk between Olympic and Meade and the adjacent resident closed it off. I recall there being a bit of a dust up over it but, if memory serves, the city ultimately backed them up and the fence stayed.
So Scott, to be clear, are you with the city? And are you refering to “squatter’s rights?”
My incomplete google search concludes that “squatter’s rights” are now termed “adverse possession” laws and they often do not apply to alleys or public right of ways. Do you know if that is the case in Decatur? Or is this a question for city hall? My backyard property line neighbor has fenced the entire alley, not just his half.
Thanks again!
No, Anne, I’m not with the city but I do have an alley so I’ve asked questions over the years. Take everything with a grain of granular sea salt.
I do not believe people who have taken them over have any legal right to them but my take is that the city is going to do whatever they can to stay out of it. Personally, I’d prefer if they reinstated/reclaimed them, making them official passageways, but left maintenance to the neighbors. That would serve the largest number of people while putting no new burden on the city.
When a right of way is formally abandoned, each landowner is typically conveyed the portion from their boundary line to the centerline of the right of way. I am not saying that your neighbor doesn’t own the entire alley as he may have previously bought it or may have acquired it through adverse possession if the property was abandoned.
If you think the proeprty is yours, you may have to file suit if your neighbor won’t willingly move his fence. But, if it is still a public right of way, the govt can require the obstruction (the fence) to be removed.
thanks Scott and DawgFan. I want to get my facts straight before I approach my neighbor since I am a bit afraid of him (famous/notorious landscape artist on Emerson, often on the garden tour
). I am not sure if I want to make a huge deal about it, but I would like access to my backyard and I am intrigued with the idea of walking trails through these old neighborhoods. What a great neighborhood project that would be!
If you don’t already have them, your closing attorney may be able to provide you copies of old plats or surveys to help illustrate the boundary lines, location of alleys, etc. and/or show your neighbor his error. I understand not wanting to get into a war with your neighbor, but, if he is taking your land (knowingly or not), it may be worth pursuing.
Thanks DawgFan. I spent a bit of time already the past week in the old plat book room in the Galloway building. Bit like going back in time. Did you know that Adair use to be named Germania? That’s how it shows up on the original drawing from 1905. Wonder if it got a new name change at WWII? Anyway, thought I would try and see what you guys might know. I will keep digging at this a bit before I knock on any doors. And if any of my Lenox Point neighbors want to explore creating trails through the alleys, I would be happy to volunteer to work on that.
You might want to get the name of your neighborhood right before you start making waves. You live in the Lenox Place neighborhood – not Lenox Pointe
thanks for your snarky comment. if you read down a little ways I corrected the name of your neighborhood.
Let me know how Ryan reacts to you asking him to move his fence. This should be hilarious.
Just to stoke the fire a little, but if it isn’t on his property, is it even his fence?
You never say anything nice to anyone do you (HAHAHA!) KIDDING!
I live in Lenox Place, and the alley behind my house is used all the time, people walking their dogs, and quite a few neighbors have made parking pads in their back yards and use the alley to access them, great idea as most of the houses on my street don’t have driveways!
When I had a situation similar to that, the City referred to it as “reverse condemnation”.
I spoke to the planning office about this topic recently when I was looking into permit requirements for a fence in my back yard. I was told that the city does not maintain the alley, and that adjoining property owners can maintain it in just about any way that does not obstruct access for others. So, you could clear it out, seed it, put down gravel, or similar. You could not fence it off or park a car on it or anything else that would be construed as an obstruction. I am not sure about enforcement, but I was told that my fence would not be permitted if it occupied any part of the alley. The alley between Drexel and Melrose gets a lot of use from adjacent properties, but the one between Drexel and Lansdowne is very overgrown.
Assuming the alleys were public right-of-ways, if the city/county formally abandoned the alleys and deeded the alleys to the adjoining landowners, that deed would be subject to your right to continue to use the alleyway. However, if your neighbors have, for example, fenced in the property or the alleyway has not been used for more than 7 years, you neighbors, by adverse possession, may have wiped out any presciptive easements you or your predecessor have acquired in the former alley.
If the alleys were never conveyed to the landowners (which is likely the case), they are still public right-of-ways, and you have a right to use them as one cannot acquire property by adverse possession from any government entity. Tell your neighbor to look out, cause you coming through.
Anne, Someone in the Lenox Place Neighborhood group has taken up the cause of officially closing the inactive alley behind Drexel running between Emerson & Devonshire. They may be willing to compare notes with you.
Good tip, I will try and follow up thru the neighborhood group. Guess I need to take note it is Lenox Place not Point as I called it earlier. It would be a shame to close the alleys off completely. I think a backyard view of Mr G’s garden would be a popular route for urban hikers. I know I have spent some time on my tippy toes trying to get a glimpse of his work. And Nelliebelle, you can see why I want to have all the information on the issue before I tick him off. I don’t think he’s gonna like it either.
Can you videotape it when he sets the Jack Russells loose on you?
I think she needs to sell tickets to this event. Good luck Anne for I hear he is quite the prickly person in general.
I would like to respectfully disagree with y’alls characterization of Mr Gainey and I am sure many of our neighbors over here on Emerson would agree. Ryan is a complex and inspirational individual, sometimes a little “rough around the edges” but most often, kind, open and sharing with his knowledge, insights and experiences. Take the time to make a friend!
I agree with you, Andy. I was laughing at the image mostly of a timid neighbor approaching Ryan on a matter related to his garden, not at Ryan himself. Ryan has the a flair that could turn it into an epic!
I suggested champagne and cocktails on the terrace but Ryan was not amused
Last evening, I parked at the courthouse and walked to Leon’s. It was scary-dark. I counted 8 street lights, of which only two were on. I was a little freaked though it was ony 6:45.
I understand efforts to reduce costs, but it was WAY TOO DARK!
Not sure which route you took to walk but I noticed that the whole stretch of W.Trinity from Commerce to McDonough is awfully dark. That discourages me from walking but is also worrisomefor the teens and preteens who often walking after dark when it’s winter in that whole stretch from the middle school to the high school to Chick Fil A then on home if they live west of the Square. It’s better lighting to cross the Square and then head west on Ponce but that’s out of the way for a lot of kids, longer for some, plus involves exposure to teen/preteen loitering on the Square. (Not that I’ve ever noticed the drugs or alcohol that are reported to be passed around on the Square–but I wouldn’t. I’m a sucker for a cheery Hi Ms. XXXX! from kids I’ve seen around since they were age 4 and they could probably be hiding a dead body without my noticing.)
You can submit a request to the city at http://www.decaturga.com. Click Residents then Make a Request on the menu. You have to then log in (or set up an account if you haven’t already).
Has anyone seen/heard any info on spring/summer CSAs? I’ve checked the usual sources and none seem to be updated.
Jackson-Lowe farm (formerly Turtle Bend Farm) is accepting subscriptions now for the 2012 season that begins in May. They deliver to several metro Atlanta locations, including a location in Oakhurst. We joined last year, and it was our best CSA experience yet. Wonderful people, excellent produce, and they have a great email newsletter each week during the season. Here’s their website:

Looking for recommendations for a summer soccer camp for an 8 year old boy who wants to try soccer out but never really played before. Probably needs to be in June. Have seen one at the Silverbacks ground and wondered if anybody has been to their camp before.
Emory Sports camps include a full day of activities in addition to soccer, — cafeteria, swimming, films.
http://go.emory.edu/General/EmoryBoysSoccerCamp/
It’s not cheap. Find a friend to carpool with.
Decatur Rec will run a soccer camp that is friendly to newcomers, but their camp info doesn’t come out until March.
Grass Rootes soccer camp is awesome and I sent two kids a couple years ago who had never played soccer, and they loved it. However, the camps will be in the evenings this year at Agnes Scott, 5-8 p.m.
We need to replace our garage door. I’d rather spend the money on a fabulous vacation or something. But, so be it.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations you may have on contractors who can get this done painlessly and efficiently.
Overhead Door Atlanta has serviced our garage door several times. I highly recommend them.
We’ve been pleased too. An our old garage is NOT easy to work on.
I feel your pain. We did this about five years ago using Doors Unlimited and were happy with the installation and are still happy with the product. Old family business, everyone was great to deal with. http://www.doorsunlimitedinc.com/
Thanks, y’all.
My Mom is coming to visit for a few weeks and she’s concerned about finding a place to have her hair “done” while she’s here. She goes once per week to a shop in her neighborhood in PA that caters to women of a certain age. Anyone have a recommendation on somewhere she could go while she’s here? I’ll say she’s over 60 but under 80 (she’d NOT be thrilled to know I posted her age in a public forum). Thanks very much.
Best method I know for finding a hairdresser that suits me, when starting from scratch, is to buttonhole women in public who seem to be about my age and whose hair looks good (and is styled in a manner similar to what I want), and ask them who does their hair. It’s one of the few personal questions you can ask a perfect stranger that makes them feel flattered and not intruded upon. I’ve never had anybody refuse to answer, and found a couple of great hairdressers that way over the years.
Scott, you bring a picture of your mom and I’ll help you buttonhole the women who look like her with good hair. I’m not sure where to start, though. Are there any good buffets in town? Maybe we can make the Colonnade for the early bird special on Tuesday. Or maybe we’ll need to hit up the Toco Hills Kroger for senior citizen Wednesday. Either way, this plan just cannot fail. You in?
Just to be clear….Scott’s mom asking random ladies on the street who does their hair will likely get her some specific recommendations and some new acquaintances. Scott and J_T walking around asking the same ladies the same question just might get their ears boxed. (There’s hardly any flattering way for a grown man to tell a strange woman that his mother would like the name of her hairdresser.) You boys watch your step!
Of course you are right about that, smalltowngal. That’s why you are coming with us!
Exactly! Then it would just be a party.
Also, I wasn’t sure what “buttonhole” meant but I figured it out. When J_T was using it, for a second I was thinking it was something on the shadier side, but he was just repeating it so I’m sure it’s fine.
I could have my 5-year-old son ask them; he seems to be irresistable to women, especially grandmothers. But you’re probably right and I should probably steer clear of it all together… with or without J_T.
J_T, are you implying that N.Scott’s mom is a drag queen?
nellie, I believe that you are putting words into my mouth. To prevent further such miscommunications, both you and smalltowngirl will be required to attend as Scott and I jointly procure hair do-ing!
How drunk are we going to be?
If we go to the Colonnade, VERY. If it’s Kroger, well let’s just say that I am no longer allowed to drink and grocery shop.
I may not even be 35 yet, but that is one of my top 5 places to eat in the entire area! it’s tied with Matthews Cafeteria in tucker for me
Are you a drag queen, then? Because nellie is going to assume you are one!
In my ideal world, every man is either gay or a drag queen.
hey scott…you could try calling some of the assisted living places to see where their ladies go to get their hair done.
STG’s advice is great. I don’t know of a “little old ladies’ salon” per se, but here are a couple recommendations for good salons that have been in the area for years.
Lee Cobb Hairdressers Inc
315 W Ponce De Leon Avenue
Decatur, GA 30030
404-872-4221
Lee Cobb has been around forever and its staff is very nice. They’ll take good care of your momma.
Cut Zoo
2106 N Decatur Rd
Decatur, GA 30033
404-636-5380
Cut Zoo is a more modern and fairly inexpensive option. It’s got a nice staff and can do a wash & set for your mom, no problem. But it’s not upscale. Think one step up from SuperCuts.
Thanks very much! I appreciate it. Oh, and if I gave the impression that she’s a little old lady, I shouldn’t have. She’d kill me if she thought I was describing her that way.
Scott, the 60 to 80 year olds frequent 3 Sisters on Medlock between Scott Blvd. and Church. Ask for Juanita. (404) 373-6596
New Scott – I go to Sego Salon on N. Decatur – kind of across from Melton’s. There are often women around your mom’s age there, as well as younger women. It is a cute salon – I am sure your mom would be happy there.
Lee Cobb is perfect for her (I get my hair cut there as well).
It is currently next to the big Kroger on Dekalb Industrial
Royer at Reggie’s Hair Salon (Clairmont/N. Druid Hills) has several regular elderly customers. He’s great.
I used to take my Grandmother to a place that might work, and is used to doing the kind of weekly hairdo appointment that some ladies like. I cannot remember the name of the salon, but it is in that building directly across from the old Holiday Inn. The hairdresser is located near Clairemont behind Decatur City Jewelers and abutting the lot behind Ted’s. It is in the building that Andryannis Greek cafe is in, but on the side nearer Clairemont than the cafe.
Sorry not to be more clear, perhaps someone else knows the name.
That spot is now a kids’ clip joint.
Ms Lisa does adduct hair and great styles!
ULTIMATE FRISBEE!! – Remember the string from last week? Looks like some things may come together. We may even have an awesome guy who will coach those of us who are clueless and help us get started. He coaches Ultimate at Druid Hills High and Druid Hills Middle (formerly Shamrock). Things probably won’t get rolling until after the February break. If you want to be in the loop and learn to play or help your kids learn to play/throw a frisbee, have ideas on how to proceed, or have some sort of knowledge and skill for those of us who are clueless that you’d like to share… proceed with all urgency to our Facebook group called…. Ultimate Frisbee Decatur.
We plan to get together starting after the break on weekends to just have fun, brainstorm and throw Frisbees. I guess we can just see where this leads.
Do you have an age limit? Just FYI, we’re not between 60 and 80. Yet.
Birth and death. It’s kind of anarchy at this point.
Anyone know of a good clothes washer repair service? Need someone reliable to diagnose whether the Kenmore needs to be repaired or recycled…. and hopefully someone who won’t charge me as much as the washer to give me the skinny on it.
Thanks.
give jerry jenkins a call (678-492-8311)…he fixed our dishwasher a while back…. he worked as a sears repairman for years and years so he knows all kinds of makes/models…and his rates are crazy reasonable. he even helped diagnose a problem over the phone for FREE!
Thanks, Annie. Called him and he is coming out tomorrow. He sounds very knowledgeable and easy going too.
happy to help! you will not meet a nicer guy…truly…
Does anybody have some flagstones, regular stones or old red bricks that they want to get rid of or sell?
Can anyone recommend a good place nearby for these things?
Thanks!
I have a stack of red bricks (some have grey paint on one side) that you’re welcome to. Email me at kc(at)boycecompany.com.
I want to give a big shout out to Onyx computer repair in Decatur. For the second time I carried my sick laptop in to have someone fix what I thought was a big problem only to be shown the little button that I need to push to get the thing working right. Niether time did anyone openly laugh at me nor make me feel like the dumba$$ that I am when it comes to technology. Super nice guys!
And that would be “neither”
I also want to give some good feedback to Alan Thornton at Decatur Computer Help. Our desktop was running slow – even though I clean it up every few weeks, have security, and it is still pretty new. The turn around time was quick and he was very responsive via email and telephone. If we ever have an issue again I will for sure use Alan’s services.
My son went to Onyx for the first time this week too and was VERY impressed with the service, cost, etc.
I have had excellent service from both Alan Thornton and Onyx (when it was something Alan was not equipped to handle immediately.) I highly recommend both. We are lucky to have this choice in Decatur.
I called Onyx to see if they could do something I hate doing with a passion: installing a screen protector on an iPad. The guy told me they had no experience doing it. I consider that a huge plus for Onyx. Having worked in many aspects of computer tech, I am used to folks always saying they can do things they can’t, and then screwing it up. Knowing your limitations is a good thing.
Did you find someone who could, and would, do it? I need that for my smartphone. I’m terrified that I’ll make the screen worse, not better.
For sale: Cakes & Ale gift card. Face value: $51.46. Asking $45. (Would also consider a trade for a Leon’s gift card of similar face value.) Would rather this not get into a “but WHYYYY” type of thing.
If you’re interested, email me (don’t comment back, I may not see it). marlatiara at yahoo. Thanks!
Bummer. Blue Elephant announced today that it’s closing in March. I understand Zucca’s will be closing its doors at the end of February.
That is a bummer. And I actually have really liked Zucca as a family friendly option for heavy pasta and decent pizza. When you’re in the mood it’s a nice alternative to fellinis and MM.
It was probably tough for them to get any sort of a bar business going with Taco Mac an established sports bar and the brick store and mac mcgee taking care of the beer and whiskey lovers. With every place that closes, though, I get more hopeful about Indian food on the square …
Dear Polar Bears,
I am so sorry about your loss of habitat, but this kind of winter ROCKS!
Actually, the winter has been brutally cold and snowy up in polar bear country this year. Also in Europe. It’s just North o’Merica that’s gotten the reprieve. I read an AP article (in the AJC!) about it earlier this week!
Bag-We-Bag – what did that mean at the dekalb farmers market?
people make fun of it world wide
i assume it wasn;t unique to the DFM
i don;t think they still say that
i think they used to say it at DFM.. from back in the 90s and late 80s..?
what was the purpose?
why did they quit?
when did they quit?
wle
I think the “bag we bag” signs referred to their pre-bagged produce, which cost a little less than produce you bag yourself. I can’t remember when they stopped with those signs, though.
“bag-we-bag” – that is exactly right!
they did use to have pre-bagged produce for a discount
it was slightly older than the regular stuff
it stood for “produce in bags that we bagged, which is slightly discounted”
it was called that to distinguish it from ‘bags you bag’, but no one ever called the non-discounted stuff that. plus not everyone ‘bagged’ their produce either. i didn;t.
i think they would put a mark or sticker on ‘bag we bag’ so the cashier knew the difference.
then the cashiers would sort of intone that as they were running the register, usually with their indian accents, etc.. that was then.. now everyone seems to be ethiopian, at the registers..
not sure what it would mean across the nation, i can;t believe stores all over the nation did that exact thing and called it that
the DFM signs had prices for the produce, which also included a smaller lettered price labeled “bag we bag” or maybe it was “bags we bag”
totally mysterious til someone told you what it was for
!
wle
I’ve always interpreted it thusly: These oranges are are $3 per BAG. But not if you bag. WE BAG.
Funny. I was wondering this same thing after a comment on last week’s FFAF. What DOES (did) that mean?
Were the signs missing punctuation or words, perhaps?
YDFM still has bag-we-bag. I buy it all the time. They generally have more of them early in the morning, but not right at 9am. Bag-we-bag gets you 20% off the marked price.
Am I the only one singing Bag We Bag to the She Bangs song?
Here’s a question for any Extreme Recyclers out there: what to do with old dental retainers? (I’ve lived in Decatur way too long, I can’t throw anything in the trash can without examining my conscience first.)
Keep trying it in different kids’ mouths until you find the perfect fit..
Hahahahaha!!!
I actually laughed aloud at this, Dawg– good ‘un! I guess you do get off something positive every now & then, eh?
Not a Helpful Answer. However, eligibility is also based on Entertainment Value, so you’re fine.

Wow! Is it dinner time yet?
The questions about Alley inspired the following thoughts…
I have been pondering building a garage/cottage house. We have a large lot and smallish house so I think we’d been well within the building/land ratios.
Assuming I could get legal permits etc. I’d like feedback on the value/usage of such a thing. The hubby and I wonder if we should save our pennies and just add to our main house eventually, although that would cost 2+x and be 2x as long before we could do and maybe in the end we’d do garage AND add on.
My main questions – as a guest space/teen hang space/ extra game room/ chill and read away from the craziness…how does such a building AWAY from the main house work get used.
Thanks for any thoughts!
I’ve contemplated the same thing too.
A Pattern Language loves these outdoor cottages because they’re multi-functional over your lifetime, serving as everything from a teen living space, to an office to a guest house to a place for your older parents to live.
Anyway, I’d like to hear how they’re used by current owners myself.
FYI: In Decatur currently you can’t build one with a stove, because that then classifies it as a “dwelling”. The 2010 Strat Plan has tasked the Zoning Task Force to look at this though.
They are all over the place in Avondale Estates. Alas, our lot is not one of them, though. We’ve been toying with the idea ourselves, but we have a fabulous tree that would likely suffer if we did any construction since the obvious place for it would require going across it’s root system with all the construction and such. In the meantime, I would be interested in hearing others’ experience.
Here’s what you do. Build a 2-story building. The bottom is an open area with a large door that acts as a garage to work on your car, store tools and bikes, put in a work bench, etc. Have stairs lead up to an apartment-like space with a bath and sleeping area. If you have male teens…when they get cars, it will be THE hangout place where you know they are safe. When you have overnight guests you want to…uh…keep at a distance, it’s perfect. Our lot is too small for this, but I’ve got friends with this setup, and I’m envious.
We call that a garage-mahal.
Ha! Awesome!!
I like the new DeKalb Medical testimonial people–very green and Decaturish–a raker and a gardener. Cheery too!
At Home in Decatur,
I know you intended your comment as a harmless affirmation of the banner change, but I gently want to challenge you conceptions of who looks “decaturish” and who does not. I think your comment struck a cord with me, as I regularly do not interact on this blog, because I don’t feel like I meet the image of “decaturish” as bandied about in these parts. Though I have lived here since the 90’s.
probably look a lot like the women who held that banner past previously, but alas, I guess she wasn’t held up as one who is decaturish. I wish that we would all expand our conceptions and see the many folks that call Decatur home.
Um, that was tongue-in-cheek. Have you seen the lady with the flowers and the man with the rake? And lady and the preacher who were there before had only one problem–they suffered from major photo distortion, IMHO.
Any runners on here got a sport med doc/orthopedist you can recommend? I have a regular doctor who I’m sure will make a referral but I need to make sure I’m going to get to someone who isn’t going to tell me “well, you’ve just got to stop running….”
Any recommendations would be most appreciated.
Hi Todd,
I went to see Dr. Brandon Mines at Emory Sports Medicine when I had a really bad case of tendonitis that would leave me writhing on the floor in pain. Dr. Mines was great, is an athlete himself and understands it’s not an option to “just stop running.”
Good luck!
Thank you so much for the name. I have had knee pain for a couple of months now that, despite going more than three weeks between runs in an attempt to “let it get better”, seems to persist. I ran a 10K a week ago, did well (for me) but tried to go for a run today and still felt pain. Ugh. Thanks for the recommendation
Todd – I have not seen him, but hear that Dr. Perry Julien is who all of the runners go to – http://www.atlantafootandankle.com/about_atlanta_foot_and_ankle.html.
My oven is giving me problems, does anyone know of anyone who repairs frigidaire stoves.
bow chicka wow wow
Someone’s been up late on the weekends watching Cinemax.
I must be the only person in Decatur not watching the Super Bowl!
Nope. Watching my hoarded DVR programs.
