All money raised by former angst goes to Decatur Education Foundation, and winners WILL receive appropriate head toppings:)
THAT is a hilarious idea!
Where on earth are there sand volleyball courts in/near downtown decatur?!?!
The only one I know of is in Virginia Highland, at John Howell Park. It’s a couple blocks west of N. Highland, on Virginia Ave.
seem to remember that there is also one at the boys and girls club on north druid hills, on the other side of I-85.
United Methodist Childrens Home has one in the back by the soccer fields
Does anyone besides me and husband still go to the movies? The theaters often seem empty to us but we tend to frequent less busy theaters like the Landmark and the Tara and go on weekday nights according to the babysitter’s schedule.
we only go to the Plaza or rarely Landmark. every other theater we’ve gone to in the past few years has had people bringing toddlers into the movie, regardless of time/rating.
“every other theater we’ve gone to in the past few years has had people bringing toddlers into the movie, regardless of time/rating.”
And the same is now true for a lot of restaurants. Whatever happened to babysitters?
I do find that Tara is generally toddler-free.
Oh man, we’ve changed where we go to eat usually over the past few years as well. I’d rather pay more than hear kids crying and making scenes while I try to have a nice dinner
I agree. And why won’t those kids stay off my lawn?
I’m out there, dozing on my porch rocking chair, in my white t-shirt, short-shorts, black socks and sandals, and I hear this infernal laughing and giggling. Then, they do it. I see them running across my lawn. I stand up, shake my cane, and yell, “You damn kids! Stay off my lawn.” But by then they are gone.
I’ve talked to the parents of those rugrats too, calmly explaining how their kids have trespassed on my property. Those parents are useless; the kids still do it.
What happened to the days when kids were seen and not heard, and then, not even seen in respectable places? Harumph!
That’s funny, but not really an accurate view of people complaining about kids in inappropriate places. I’ve seen parents with five and six year olds in tow at R and NC-17 rated movies. That’s not funny. And when kids run around and scream at restaurants and bars that are not kid-appropriate, I don’t “shake my cane” at the kids, but I do shake my head in disbelief at their rude, irresponsible, and selfish parents who seem clueless as to how annoying they are. “Harumph,” I assure you, is not the word most of use under our breath when such people show a lack of regard for others in public places.
So True! I saw a family (including 5 – 11 year olds) at a screening of “Get Him to The Greek”. To me, thats borderline abuse. Haven’t been to the movies in a while since – can’t see spending so much money to have to listen to kids screaming, cell phones going off, and see people texting out of the corner of my eye. Thank goodness for netflix!
My four year old loves restaurants and knows that if he acts like an ass we are leaving, period. It’s the easiest discipline method ever and I don’t know why everyone doesn’t employ it. I can’t honestly believe theaters are letting little kids into adult movies. How on earth is an R-rated movie appropriate for a kid?? My mom took me to the drivein when I was 5 for a double bill of Jaws and King Kong. I still have horror reactions to apes and swimming.
our moms must’ve been friends- I had the jaws-as-a-5-year-old thing too- I still can’t deal with scary movies.
I saw just a few minutes of a TV rerun of the original King Kong and was frightened of skyscrapers for years.
I see lots of movies; it’s a favorite pastime.
My preferred theaters are Landmark and Tara, though we often hit up the North Dekalb AMC (for variety and location). Usually, I love the independent films at the Tara, and am impressed with the great customer service but I find the patrons/demographics while probably better educated and more mature than at other venues to be rude — they often hold conversations during the show. Landmark/Midtown has good snacks and even serves beer and wine.
AAA members can buy discounted tickets to both Regal (Tara) and AMC theaters. Also, I take advantage of “matinee” or weekend discounts, and Groupon type deals.
We would have to pay a babysitter, so no.
If we take the family, we go on Saturday or Sunday mornings, when tickets are $5 each for everyone at AMC, even for new movies! POTC here we come!
Unfortunately, most of the movies released in theaters are aimed at adolescent boys and men who refuse to grow up. And even at the “art” movies, people behave like juveniles. I went to Meek’s Cutoff at Landmark last week, and some woman came in 10 minutes late with a giant feed bag of popcorn that she noisily consumed, and another guy (also late) was shotgunning Goobers so that the rattling from the cardboard box obscured the already hard to hear dialogue. And this was in an audience of less than 15 people.
I love seeing movies in the theater! Yes, there are annoyances from time to time, but some thngs are just better on the big screen. I recently enjoyed Cave of Forgotten Dreams at the Tara, don’t think it would be the same on a TV (at least not my TV).
“I recently enjoyed Cave of Forgotten Dreams at the Tara, don’t think it would be the same on a TV (at least not my TV).”
I was hoping that would get a 3-D release here, but apparently it’s only showing in 2D. Still, I think I will check it out this weekend.
Melissa, are they showing it in 3D there?
No, it’s in 2D at the Tara. While I read it was amazing in 3D, it was pretty amazing anyway, so I highly recommend it anyway.
The Movie Tavern at Northlake is always at least half-full whenever I go there. I haven’t gone to a movie theater on a weekday since Boogie Nights came out, though, so I can’t speak for their weekday business.
I did go, but I’m just not feeling it anymore.
I have seen 3 movies in the theater this year. But after the last 2 experiences being so completely dreadful, I will not go back to the theater unless it is something I’m absolutely dying to see. My experience at Midtown was alright, but the other 2 were total crap. Malfunctioning audio in one & then the film in the other, the audience issues mentioned above, and the cost of tickets & coke/popcorn have made what used to be an enjoyable experience, totally suck. If it weren’t so expensive for what you get, I probably wouldn’t be so bent out of shape about it. But to pay to have a miserable experience, and walking away feeling disgruntled, blows. Would rather spend a little more $ on a leisurely meal in good company, than deal with that.
Agreed, ticket prices do seem really high especially when compared to the per-movie cost of Nteflix, for example. But I never eat movie theater food of any kind, I think it is horrid and not worth the calories. Instead I plan on eating a nice meal at home or out. If I’m at one of the theaters that sells wine and beer, like the Plaza, I might have a beer, though.
I gave up seeing movies in theaters about five years ago. I don’t consider myself a germaphobe, but I just don’t think theaters are clean.
The only place to see a movie is at the Fox.. Unfortunately, the only time you can do this is during their Summer Film Festival, which, BTW, starts next month. Check http://www.foxtheatre.org.
Ok, seriously… does anybody know what is going on at the corner of 2nd and Hosea??
Looks like a cosmetic paint job to make it attractive to prospective tenants. There doesn’t appear to be any renovation happpening. It would make a nice goat pen.
BIRDS IN MY FERNS!!!
I bought the most gorgeous ferns in hanging baskets from “the fancy Ace” (as we call it). Apparently, the birds think they are gorgeous too, and have nested in one. Two questions for DMers:
1. I will respect the birds now that they have nested (and treat it as a learning experience for my kids to watch them come and go and feed the babies). But I am not excited about leaving a fern hanging to die on the front porch all summer. I’m afraid if I move it to the ground, it won’t be safe for them. Is there any way I can keep the fern watered? Can I safely move it?
2. What on earth do I do going forward to keep birds out of my ferns?????
The bird nest will be empty soon, and you can CAREFULLY water around the nest when the parents aren’t nearby. The eggs will hatch soon, and the little birds will soon be out of the nest. I’m sure your fern can weather the interim, this is not an all-summer phenomenon, believe me…
We have had wrens move into the hanging ferns on our porch every now and then. We just water the fern as usual (ocassionally startling each other in the process), but no worries, everybody settles down really quickly. The nest usually isn’t centered, so just water with a watering can on the other side.
Thanks Lee and Chira! I had hoped I could keep watering it– but was afraid I might cause the birds to abandon the nest or something. I suppose it isn’t all that different from rain on a nest in a tree.
Roundabout at Emory Village is now open (though they are still working on it). Seemed to be functioning fairly well this morning.
Of course it’s functioning well. Now that we have an excellent demonstration roundabout, we should start demanding the installation of more. Call your reps.
Why are roundabouts/traffic circles better — because traffic keeps flowing rather than stopping and starting?
Yes – they are considered (& if placed in a proper location have proven ) to be better because the majority of cars that traverse them do not need to stop & start. Traffic flows, gas isn’t wasted while cars sit queued at a stop sign or red light, etc.
I’m with Sam. I would welcome a great many more of them.
They also greatly reduce the speed at which accidents happen. Fender benders maybe, but usually no major accidents.
Oh please! What an overpriced fiasco.
How is it a fiasco if it ends up solving the problems it was designed to solve?
Not to overstate things, but the entire area has now been under construction for roughly 37 years. Maybe they will finish the roundabout by 2238.
Why? Just the cost? They work well in American cities small and large, and all over the world. They are nothing to be afraid of.
I like this idea better.
Maybe a new street sign is what the world needs now
http://blog.ted.com/2010/02/11/maybe_a_new_str/
I dedicated a whole post to that idea a few month back!
Used it yesterday heading into it from the Clifton Road end of Oxford Road. It wasn’t pretty since there’s still construction everywhere but it worked fine. I had a moment of “what do I do now?” but just kept driving round it until I saw my exit out and all worked out.
HELP! I’m still in it! Which way do I go?
Left!
HA! “Left.”. Well played, karass, well played.
He is already heading in that direction.
Any suggestions on where to find a part time nanny who speaks Spanish? Looking for two days per week beginning in October.
Anybody have an update on the availability of Growler’s at Ale Yeah, or anywhere else in town? I had heard “late May” which is now, so am curious.
When I was in last Saturday, Ale Yeah had one of their growlers on display. Said the walk in fridge for the kegs was going in soon. I would assume putting it all together and plumbing it up may take a week or two, but the ball is rolling.
Grrrrrr…get your growler buzz on this Thursday…..grrrr…
Does anyone know where to get recycled nursery pots in Atlanta, or someone that sells them new? I can usually find them on craigslist, but I keep missing them and I need some this weekend.
Thanks!
Try freecycle.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a fencing company to handle a relatively small project?
We had great luck with Chamblee Fence on our small project.
If you are looking for something to do tonight…Edie Carey at Eddies Attic makes for a great Friday night!
Are you ready for the Zombie Apocalypse? CDC has you covered. http://bit.ly/lGULxC Glad to know they are on the job.
Don’t we need to get through tomorrow’s Rapture first?
– dude who is probably not gonna make the cut.
Why are so many people blocking the side walks with yard waste? Walking down Howard I have to step into the busy street with a stroller….and same on Drexel – come on people have some curtoursey for your fellow neighbors.
Why is it when people’s off-leash dogs (or cats) that are not under voice control attack my on-leash dog on public property – they yell at me?
Because your animal is taunting their animal.
Taking a day-possibly overnight-trip to Athens, GA. next week. Any recommendations on eats, drinks, and sites to see? Only plan as of now is to eat at “5 and 10″.
LOVE Big City Bread for breakfast and Last Resort for any meal (including drinks and dessert).
Big City Bread – best bakery in town, for sure. Bread, desserts, etc. Note that The Grit also serves breakfast…
You absolutely MUST visit Cali N’ Tito’s. It’s near the baseball field on Lumpkin. Extremely good, cheap Mexican food and BYOB ($2.00 charge). Funky little shack of a place but you will not be disappointed.
They do not accept credit cards, only cash and personal checks.
The Grit, Farm 255, Last Resort, The National
The Grit! The Grit! The Grit!
And if you’re out late, make sure to stop in at The Grill for fries and feta.
If you’re going midweek, there’s two nights of Bob Dylan’s Birthday celebrating going on–and the Manhattan serves one of the best drinks ever: Maker’s Mark & Blenheim Ginger Ale. Ahhh…
The Grit’s pretty yummy, and their tofu w/ nutritional yeast gravy is a MUST must!

Thanks for all the great suggestions! Definitely seems to be a consensus about The Grit.
Mama’s Boy is really great for breakfast… and if you’re there during lunch time, you may want to try Weaver D’s. It’s basic soul food. 25 years of soul food. And made even more famous by R.E.M. … “Automatic for the People”…
Should’ve included this link too:

Grit = yummy but beware of the nutritional beast (they like to use it in or on everything)!
What is the “nutritional beast”?
It’s the nutritional yeast they like to sprinkle on numerous dishes, most people can’t taste it, but it’s there. The cakes and pies are superb and likely do not contain the yeast ingredient.

Since it is Free for all Friday, here goes –Am I crazy or is it odd that 2 of the 3 newest principals named in CSD don’t have children? I know they are very qualified and skilled but isn’t it sort of like being a sky diving instructor but never having actually jumped from the plane?
I think I was better with kids before I had them.
+1.
Come on there are plenty of good male OB/Gyns.
While I agree that a great principal can be childless, I prefer that my ob/gyns be female. In fact, I’m not even interested in a female obstetrician that hasn’t had children herself. I’m not saying that male or childbirth-less female obstetricians cannot be excellent medically but childbirth is such a life-changing, powerful experience that one cannot get the same understanding vicariously as one can from undergoing it oneself.
Yeah, word on this one. I’ve had one male OB-GYN, and it was a most frustrating experience. Similarly, I can’t imagine being a man and being comfortable having a female proctologist…perhaps it’s an unfair prejudice, but why would you want a doctor whose anatomy wasn’t the same as yours in the crucial areas you’re seeing them about? It’s not like a neurosurgeon or a gastroenterologist or a cardiologist, because everyone has those systems…but when it comes to the nether regions, I’d just as soon see someone who understands first-hand what I’m talking about.
I have a female doc and it has never been an issue. In fact, her smaller hands have been a blessing.
Same here. Mrs. Token and I see the same female GP, and I am perfectly comfortable with her. Gender is irrelevant to me in pretty much every profession.
Hey, to each his own. No matter how good a male gyno is, he’s never going to be able to truly relate to the issues women have with their bodies. As for your female procto, well, she’s probably used to men who are full of sh!t, so maybe it’s not such a stretch for her to specialize in men’s…exits.
Nice trifecta comment: Crude, dubious, and sexist all at once.
Never took you for such a man-hater. If we ever meet, I promise to keep my distance.
Really, Token? You couldn’t see that my last sentence was a joke? I don’t expect much from KF, because he hasn’t been posting here as long & therefore isn’t as familiar with me, but I thought you were quicker on the draw. “Man-hater”? LOL! That’s rich.
And Keith, please spare me the prim “egads, that was CRUUUUDE!” sentiments. You’re not exactly a schoolmarm when you’re engaged here (nor is Token, for that matter). Yes, it was crude– because it was a JOKE. Do I really have to use a smiley icon to make sure you get it?
Gibbetts, thanks for the back-up.
If it truly were IN YOUR OPINION, I would have had no problem, but the absolute ALLNESS of your statement went past opinion. You said, “No matter how good a male gyno is, he’s never going to be able to truly relate to the issues women have with their bodies.” I’m completely convinced that you believe there is no man you could truly relate to when discussing your body, and that is fine. But for you to put that on every other man-doctor/woman-patient relationship, in my opinion, is ridiculous.
And as for me being prim and EGADS minded, perhaps you could have chosen to take it as a complement. I did, after all, congratulate you. But, I’m not surprised that you tend to believe you are familiar with my intent while at the same time doubting that I am familiar with yours.
Really??? Do I not only have to use a smiley icon for you, but use a disclaimer to qualify something this specific to my prefernces as my opinion? That’s a little bit overwrought of you, don’t you think?
“But for you to put that on every other man-doctor/woman-patient relationship, in my opinion, is ridiculous.” What’s ridiculous is your apparent inability to actually comprehend what I expressly wrote, as evidenced by your completely overblown summarization. This is a fruitless exercise, since you seem intent upon being antagonized by whatever I say, so I won’t further ruffle your feathers. That is, unless you just like it, and then I’ll be happy to oblige you.
(See, I used a little jokey icon just for you!!!)
My comprehension skills are quite strong, thank you very much, regardlesss of the spin you would like to put on it.
Last word.
You’re right, I didn’t catch the joke. I thought it DID seem a bit harsh for you, so we’re good.
I respect your preference for whichever gender doctor your choose, and I would never criticize you for such. I was just making what I thought at the time was an innocent comment about not having a preference. Didn’t know it would turn into a scrum, with Gibbets doing his patented grenade-throwing of irrelevant commentary.
I think you may have interpreted my initial comment to mean a gender preference for ANY doctor who treats me, so I tried to explain, which then got construed way beyond the original context by Keith. But yup, you & me are good. (For the humour impaired: yes, the use of improper grammar is deliberate.)
Isn’t it hilarious when Conservs go all politically correct?
So what you’re saying is, a male conservative is expected to prefer a male doctor, and there is no room for the possibility that he just may not give a damn what gender his doctor is? I’m surprised at your small-mindedness. I always assumed you were smarter than that, but I guess I was mistaken.
What does one (political preference) have to do with the other (guys seeing female doctors)? That’s quite a stretch in illogic, even for you.
And I’m not a conservative.
“Never took you for such a man-hater. If we ever meet, I promise to keep my distance.”
Your words.
Cuba’s post sounded like an exaggerated joke to me–as did yours (don’t know about KF’s–or care…), and I was just going along with it.
If Cuba’s was not a joke (or yours) then I’d say everyone’s a little testy today–come on, guys, criticizing other peoples’ preferences for doctors? Exactly who is being small minded?
As far as I can tell, no one was criticizing other people’s choice of doctors. Cuba likes female docs, and Keith and I don’t have a preference.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
To belabor your point, which stems mainly from the fact that you mainly missed my original point: I clearly stated that with some conditions, gender doesn’t (and shouldn’t) matter; however, IN MY OPINION, gender does matter when it comes to certain gender-specific areas of the body (and their concomitant conditions). That’s only because it’s a little more reassuring to know that the person who’s treating you will or has personally experienced what you’re going through. I never applied that preference to ALL doctors that might treat me. Both you and Keith appear to have missed that distinction. You wouldn’t mind a female urologist? Fine. A female proctologist would be your first choice? Super! You’re more open-minded than I am. All better now?
Being a good principal is a bit like being an old fashioned country doctor–your work never ends and your life is never your own. So I think a lot of folks with busy families either choose not to or can’t live up to the role. One of the best principals ever was Cheryl Kuebler at Westchester and she was married but never had children, only stepchildren. She was totally dedicated to her students and school in ways that busy parents would find it hard to be.
From past work experience, I knew several principals (mostly high school), and, though they all had kids, their kids were at least college age.
Guess you never experienced Catholic schools staffed largely by nuns. Great teachers, great principals.
My thought, too, Krutz.
+++ Amen to that. My son went to a Catholic grade school and learned good study habits and self-discipline. I can’t think how fortunate we were to place him in that school (don’t ask, it’s a long story).
Wow, that’s the total opposite of what my parents said about Catholic school–and the nuns in particular.
So going from school to real life is like jumping out of an airplane?
Yes, you’re crazy. It doesn’t matter that they don’t have kids, and I don’t see why their personal lives need to be up for discussion on a public forum.
I just read on creative loafing website that Big Tex Cantina was opening this afternoon for business. Can anyone confirm this? I am already drooling over Frito crusted food!
It was packed last night but I think that might have been a soft open for friends and family
I heard an eye witness report that it was full of customers last night around six o’clock. I’m guessing a friends and family soft opening?
Yes, that is correct.
I have the 24th in my brain as the official opening day.
Friday, May 27. 4 pm.
Thank goodness the world didn’t end, so we all get a chance to go there!
According to their facebook page, last night was a family n friends party and they open next weekend, May 27.
John Portman designed ugly buildings that made downtown unfriendly to pedestrians and he should not have a street named after him. Discuss.
I don’t think streets should be renamed. Is the original honoree (Harris) no longer worthy? Use new streets or other new civic projects for new honorees. I agree Portman’s buildings are consistently terrible for sidewalk life but I don’t think that should eliminate him from consideration for a civic honor. He may be qualified for other contributions to the community.
He should definitely have a street named after him. It would have twenty buildings on it. One would be a skyscraper hotel with no access from Portman Street–you’d have to walk down a nasty alleyway to get to the front entrance on the other side. The other 19 buildings would be abandoned storefronts that had once housed thriving local businesses. Occasionally, a wig shop would open in one of the abandoned storefronts, but would close within weeks.
Sounds like a Disneyland of the weird.
really we should be hating on Le Corbusier, a French archiect who’s radical design thoughts influenced modernist architects. He’s the father of the too-big plazas and skywalks that take people off of the street. Portman executed that for downtown Atlanta. I work in one of his buildings (I refer to it as the prison-like structure). I do know that my architect friends think really highly of Portman and that Portman is a huge name nationally. It is just not a style I like, and like Darren, I think it destroys street life. But there were plenty of other things that have destroyed vibrancy of downtown(s), such as the Urban Redevelopment of the 60s, and slicing the connector through Auburn Ave, so Portman shouldn’t get the full brunt of the blame.
Here’s a new twist. People move into Oakhurst, then cut down their beautiful Oak trees. Nothing like the sound of chainsaws in the evening.
Ouch – maybe that was the chainsaws from our front yard! We’ve lived in Oakhurst eleven years — we’re in our second house in the neighborhood now. One of the things that sold us on this one was the gorgeous, huge water oak in the front yard. Unfortunately it had root rot and we were VERY upset to have it taken down this week. I don’t think ANYone wants to spend that kind of money to lose something they love so much! Our arborist thinks the tree that fell up the street (at Kings & Ansley) the other night probably had the same thing. Google “weeping butt rot” (no – I’m not kidding — my 8 year old son thinks that’s hilarious!) and you’ll see that the warning sign that your oak has this is when it blows over. Completely. When I asked the arborist if there was anything that could be done she told me to focus on the fact that it had 120 good years. We should all be so lucky!
By the way, I did send a “heads up” email to the MAK neighborhood group the week before so that anyone who was scheduled to work at home (or try to get a baby to nap!) would know about the horrible noise all day.
Thanks for all the kind emails from MAK neighbors who mourned the loss of our tree with us! The front yard is like a desert now – not looking forward to the new AC bills…last year we made it ’til July 9th before we broke down and used the AC…not so sure that will be the case this year!
sorry about your tree, amy…sounds like you did the right thing, though. i saw that tree that fell on ansley this week…very scary, indeed. so glad it fell the way it did.
There is a generation of Water Oaks in “Oak”hurst that is getting to the end of its natural lifespan. They are fast growing and good in urban conditions, but are among the shortest-life span oaks there are. We dropped major coin last spring taking an old, sick tree down. Once I saw the comically rotten inside of the (5-foot? diameter) trunk that faces my daughter’s bedroom, I was happy to open up my wallet.
If you have an old oak with skinny leaves that is not really looking as full as it could, it might be worth having it looked at.
Amy, who is your arborist? We are in a similar situation. It breaks my heart to bring these trees down but we have the same rotting issue and I get nervous during every storm.
Reading some of these comments, I have to ask, when did Decatur Metro turn into “The Vent?”
Wait, did I just vent?
i had that EXACT same thought yesterday afternoon…
great minds think alike…
Where is Andisheh Nouraee?
And when is he going to fix all the problems?
He’s been tweeting from across the pond.
Isn’t there some sort of recycling event tomorrow at a church in Decatur? Can someone fill me in on the details of that? Name of church, time, location, etc.
Thanks!
Message on Oakhurst Yahoo Board mentioned Electronics Recycling at Decatur First Baptist. HTH.
More details: Time: ( 9 to 1).

Thanks!
Thanks from me too! I saw the post at 1:10 pm Saturday, raced over there with a microwave — and they took it!
What is going on with Dannemans on College? It’s been closed for weeks. Should I start a Trader Joe’s rumor just for kicks?
or a dollar general one for sh*ts and grins…
Haven’t heard much mention of El Tesoro in a while. Was there ever any conclusion to the rumor that it was just closing for a few months? That was in January. I was one of the few that seemed to have good reviews and actually miss that place.
I’d like to know too. I thought it was deader than a doornail but a reopening would be welcome for us. It was open on Monday nights when little else is.
There has been a big “For Rent” sign on the front door for a least 2 months.
Not exactly Decatur, but right over the line in East Lake. Anyone else see the goats clearing the overgrown lot that’s part of the East View Cemetary on 4th Ave.?
Yes! Did a double take on the way to Publix last week. They were in lot on 2nd, just south of Hosea. There was a sign about some kind of universal green weed control, and contact info. If I hadn’t already shelled out for lawn mower repair, would investigate renting one for the summer! (My yard is not so much grass and lots of interesting forage/pasturage.)
Still trying to pick a smartphone. QUESTION: Is anybody successfully syncing an Android 2.x phone with Outlook 2007? (Locally installed Outlook, not Outlook Exchange) If so, how? I’m reading that it’s only feasible with a 3rd party app, of which several are available but which AT&T blocks.
thx!
Please drivers, remember that a right turn on red is legal only after a full stop.
Awh, come on … is that regular rolling right turn from East Lake onto 2nd Ave bothering you as well? And it’s much worse when she’s on her cell phone.
And now for something completely different………….. Well no I have seen ithis question before. My doctor of the last 18 years has gone wacky, he only wants to play with his computer and tell me anything I want to hear to get me out of the office. Can anyone suggest a doctor in Decatur who will accept a new 59 year old patent? With very good insurance coverage.
About a year after mine started doing that, he went completely ’round the bend and switched to a concierge practice. Still haven’t found a replacement I’m happy with.
who would this be by chance?
i’m looking for a GP here in downtown decatur right now actually
We got a recommendation for Dr. Chad Costley from a Free-For-All a while ago and love him! He has a wonderful staff, he’s very personable and we’ve never had to wait to see him once we arrive. His office is right next to Watershed on West Ponce.
Dr. Timothy Watts here in Oakhurst is awesome. He has his office at the Solarium and lives in the neighborhood. He spends lots of time with his patience and isn’t super quick to prescribe. He’s like a neighborhood smalltown doctor.
Can I tag along with this thread? I’m looking for a family physician in or near Decatur that’s accepting new patients. Any ideas anyone?
You mean Guy-nacologist?
Dr Chad Costley – gp in decatur – near watershed
Thanks, but it doesn’t look like he sees young kids. I am really hoping for us all to go to the same place.
Dr Marion Owen, on Winn Way…. If she is accepting new patients.
Her waiting list is a couple years long – she’s my doctor and I just inquired yesterday for a friend of mine.
Dr. Scott Ramshur at Oak Grove Family Medicine is great. He sees kids 2 and up.
A big YES for Dr. Chad Costley. He is great and a throw back/old school doctor. He actually sits and talks with you and doesn’t just immediately prescribe meds. And…..he answers his own phone calls on off hours.
Btween seeing him and picking up my meds from McKinneys…I do feel like I am in Mayberry!
I agree with the recommendations for Dr. Costley, though with the caveat that I’ve only seen him three times thus far. I love that his is largely a paperless office; I’ve never been to a doctor that conducted the payment transaction via smartphone!
Emory clinics have the best doctors in town, and all of them communicate well with each other. It’s worth a 6-mile commute to go there. Just my humble opinion…
Prom photos coming soon?
From what I understand, yes. Plus the AJC was there for a majority of the dance so, expect something from them as well.
A new/old issue: breastfeeding in public. What in the world is Forest Park doing to pass a city ordinance against “public indecency” that includes an “exemption” for breastfeeding children children under age 2? What’s the difference in breastfeeding a child 1 year old or 2 years old, or older, with respect to “public indecency”? The article I read said something about a similar ordinance in DeKalb County — is this true?
p.s. I should add that I am 100% in favor of breastfeeding, including breastfeeding in any public place. I breastfeed my son against a lot of opposition (from the doctors and the medical establishment), and have always been so glad I did. La Leche League helped me in every way. I hear there will be a breastfeeding sit-in in Forest Park some day this week, not sure when or where…
There are doctors that oppose breastfeeding?
Also check out the “Feed where we Please” group. They might be able to help.

My experience with doctor/hospital opposition to breastfeeding occurred in 1972; times have changed (for most people, anyway). The link to the Onion article you provided is not helpful for the purpose of my comments.
That’s OK. It was meant to be funny. But I’m sorry if you were offended.
You should be congratulated for breastfeeding against medical advice in 1972. But since we are talking about 1972 – did you smoke or drink during pregnancy/nursing? (Be honest…)
And – I should add that I am 100% in favor of breastfeeding – who is not?. Even for as long as anyone feels it’s right for their child. But what if I say I don’t think it is OK to breastfeed a small child (toddler +) in public? I don’t know if 2 is the right age, but I know it when I see it.
At a certain age, it should be done in the privacy of one’s home.
Puzzling is why a municipality would even take this on. Certainly there are larger problems than militant breastfeeders running about, offending grumpy old men like me. Guess we’ll just have to find something else to grumble about.
Even in 1972, most pregnant women knew enough not to smoke during pregnancy–my Mom would “give up” smoking with each pregnancy (and then resume). And you can’t blame pregnant women for drinking during pregnancy in 1972–fetal alchohol syndrome wasn’t even named until 1973 and the corresponding Surgeon’s General warning came out in 1981, according to Wikipedia!
It’s time Americans get used to nursing in public, any age child, anywhere. We’re one of the few societies that are so prudish about it. I’m using the term “nursing” because so many folks freak out when the term “breast” is used in everyday conversation. Maybe we’d be less breast-obsessed if we recognized that its primary biologic function is for nursing.
I did not smoke nor drink alcohol during my pregnancy. I have never smoked, incidentally, although raised in a chain-smoking home atmosphere. I don’t know what could be offensive about nursing a child 2 years old (or older) — you can’t see any more breast exposure at that age/size of the child than you could have seen when he or she was 6 months old or 1 year old. Why the feeling of being offended by nursing mothers and their children in ages older than 2? Thanks, Karass, for your support. As for Randy the Ram, I don’t know what to say to you, so I’ll just forego…
To be perfectly honest – who cares about the exposure of a body part – really? It’s not about that and public nursing isn’t really that offensive.
I can really only speak for myself, but for some people the issue is a bit different. Past a certain age – nursing a child in public creates an awkward situation. Too much of an overly personal parenting style, IMHO That’s all. My personal view on it is that after a certain age nursing becomes more of a security blanket than a critical nutrition source. Child past a certain age could get all the great nutrients with a couple of at home feedings – no need for snacking in public. Some things are just best left for the privacy of one’s own home – or at least done very discreetly.
Kind of hard to articulate, but analogous to a couple of teenagers making out in a park. Nothing wrong with it, but it’s very rude or impolite to do it in public, wouldn’t you agree? (And don’t read too much into my analogy – that is not what I am getting at!).
And again – it’s really not that big of a deal. Offensive? No. Awkward – yes. I’ve seen this happen with school age children maybe 3 times in the past 10 years, so I must not be the only one who thinks this way.
I responded to your post because of the implied assumption that folks who think nursing older children in public is inappropriate are necessarily “anti-breastfeeding”.
“in any public place.”
Breastfeeding is not indecency.
But I am absolutely opposed to women breastfeeding in restaurants for a slew of reasons. I have only seen it once (during an expensive brunch), and hope I never have to again honestly.
Breastfeeding in public should most certainly not be illegal in any way, shape or form. But it would be nice to see a little respect for other people who have paid for their meal as well.
IMHO, it’s too bad that nursing in public is considered disrespectful or awkward. Most nursing Moms are pretty good at covering up although not all babies/toddlers are tolerant of that. And some nursing Moms are new at it or having a lot of problems with latch or milk supply and keeping their babies hydrated. It’s not so easy as “just give a bottle”–then the latch or milk supply problem gets worse. What’s more important–keeping bystanders from feeling uncomfortable or keeping mothers comfortable with nursing? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children be nursed for at least the first twelve months of life and exclusively for the first six! But the U.S. has incredibly low rates of meeting that recommendation and won’t be close until mothers and bystanders accept nursing as a natural sight. Why does so much classic art show mothers and infants with a lot of breast showing–because that’s what’s natural with nursing! I don’t think the artists were trying to tease the viewer.
I remember feeling uncomfortable about nursing years ago but it’s time to get past that. “Older” children nursing is a rare sight now but used to be quite common everywhere, especially before the pasteurization of cow’s milk. Cow’s milk is still not tolerated by a lot of people–for obvious reasons–it evolved for calves, not people. Wet nurses used to be what a lot of children used when cow’s milk was unsafe. I wonder how our society would deal with wet nurses now!
Having said that, boy did my father have to adjust when I nursed one child for 5 months and the other for a little more than 2 years (their preferences by the way–even then I couldn’t control them and make them follow AAP guidelines)! But he did adjust. He ranted and raved when my two organic, crunchy sisters-in-law nursed whenever and wherever they needed to. But he finally got it when his own daughter was struggling with doing the best she could for her babies!
I guess some people do find it uncomfortable or awkward, but most reasonable understand babies have to eat.
I think the irritation come with (I really don’t know a better word to use) but maybe the brazenness of it? Feeding your child isn’t a brazen act in the least, but you will always have the attitude, that they can do it absolutely anywhere, and how dare anyone ever suggest otherwise, and you better not say chit about it. This isn’t a majority of new moms at all, but the almost smug attitude is what is irritating.
The latch problems you described, aren’t best solved in a public place where there’s loud noise, and distractions, like car honking, loud talking, etc…
Women should be able to breastfeed anywhere they need to, but like anything, respect for others needs to be factored in. Most women are discreet, and no one would ever notice, but there are some that aren’t, and flop the whole thing out whenever, where ever. This is not necessary to feed a child, that’s just because they feel like they should be able to, and are on a some sort of high and mighty mission to show the word what great crunchy moms they are, and you better not say anything about it either unless you’re prepared for a wrath.
I have used a few generalizations in here, and it’s really not the majority. But like anything, a few ruin it for everyone.
I guess I’m willing to tolerate a little smugness and flopping if it helps further the cause of promoting nursing as the cultural, healthy norm. I find incredibly fit joggers in tight lycra clothing to be annoyingly floppy and smug too but I support the cause of a healthy, fit, walk/run/bikeable Decatur! I was never lucky enough to be floppy enough to be smug!
For those who have never nursed, i.e. at least 50% of the population or more: No matter how glamorous and easy Hollywood supermoms make it seem, nursing is not easy or automatic for the majority of mothers. It’s darn hard work, requiring practice, persistence, physical stamina, loss of modesty, limitations on mobility, and a whole lot of giving up of the rest of life, at least in the beginning, and for some mothers, the whole 12 months they are supposed to be doing it. So a little self back-patting and zealousness on the part of nursing Moms should be forgiven. (Believe me, I know how smug some nursing Moms can be and the La Leche anti-working Mom rhetoric doesn’t help–I had two sisters-in-law who made me feel like a criminal for working and only breastfeeding my first child for 5 months when the baby WEANED ITSELF!!!)
So who got raptured yesterday?
I know I’m posting late, but I’m hoping that there are some monday morning readers who can help me with this question.
Do you use Decatur WiFi which is (I assume) provided by the City? How is the access? Are there many “dead spots” around Decatur where you can’t get access?
Thanks.
I think most folks have found that you cannot rely on Decatur WiFi as your only service provider, but perhaps others know more.
Also, I am looking for someone to install some french doors at the new house. I want to put them where there is currently a large double window. So I’ll need someone who can remove the rest of the exterior wall and do the installation.
Hope I’m not the only one still reading FFAF …
