I STILL miss Crescent Moon.
Me too!
Last night we headed to Oakhurst for Jazz. As usual, many places were packed, but things were slow at SABA. We had a fantastic meal there, though, and the price was great. Remember to support these folks, they’ve been through a lot.
totally agree about saba…we’ve had some terrific take out meals from there and will continue to support them in great hopes of lifting the curse of the doomed restaurant space!
I’m crazy about Saba. The Vegan Vindaloo Spaghetti and the artichoke appetizer are both fantastic.
Adore Saba– but is it a fact that they took the bolognese off the menu??? It was my favorite dish. I pulled the menu up on my Blackberry the other night and didn’t see it. Hoping it was just a browser issue… Anyway, they are the best, especially for folks with food allergy issues. They are super-careful about ingredients. They always remember us when we call and confirm that we need certain ingredients left out. It’s a great neighborhoor asset.
My fiance and I went there a few weeks back and loved it. great food, quiet, and cheap!
Is Pandemonium still scheduled to play on Decatur Square this coming Wednesday noon (29th)? I don’t see them listed on the activities calendar now…
I meant CONUNDRUMS! (Pandemonium is another group entirely…)
Yup.
Would just like to pass along an amazing resource I found on the interwebs.
The Khan Academy
http://www.khanacademy.org/
Thank you very much, sir. That’s a good one.
That is an amazing website. I had been using to prepare for a graduate exam. I also took a Kaplan prep class, and this is actually much better IMO for the math, not to mention free. Every student should know about it. If it’s good enough for Bill Gates’ kiddies, I think it’s alright for the rest of us.
How nice that I contribute to a post about education and type like a 4th grader. D’oh!
That just makes you sexy. I swear.
Wow. Thanks for posting, Davo.
thumbs up on that
Read about him in one of my finanical magazines. What a great resource.
Khan Academy is one of the deserving winners in Google’s “Project 10^100″.

So…can we take it that he’s given up his vendetta against Captain Kirk?
well played
I tell all my classes about Khan academy.
What have they done to the timings of the lights at McDonough/College/Howard? It is so much worse now.
Yeah, WTF happened?? The first green light headed south on McDonough stays green about long enough for 3 cars to get through. Anyone from the city want to address this? It’s getting very annoying.
I noticed this recently as well…
Dekalb County handles the traffic signals & pedestrian crossing signals. They’re very polite & very responsive when notified of a malfunction. (Assuming you are polite when you call it in.)

Anybody know a good place to fly a kite in Decatur? Robbie Jr got a kite a few weeks ago and is now ‘strongly encouraging’ her father to take her somewhere and fly it.
Not in Decatur, but I often see people flying kits over in Freedom Park.
The big field at Glenlake Park is prime for kite flying!
Winonna Park.
i’ve seen people flying kites in the open area next to the railroad tracks on Howard Avenue at Adair Street on several occasions. seems like an odd choice, but somehow it works!
How about the cemetery?
Lots of open (air) space over at the Methodist Children’s Home (back near the playing fields).
Even though it is still in the 90′s and does not feel like fall at all…does anyone know where any Pumpkin Patches near Decatur? Or where there will be some soon? Thanks!
Visit http://www.pumpkinpatchesandmore.org/ for loads of info on pumpkin patches.
I know they do several pumpkin sales in and around Decatur (Glenwood Academy does one at their Fall Carnival) but if you want a true pumpkin patch you may have to load up and drive a bit….it is worth it, though. We are huge fans of Southern Belle Farm.
Thank you! This is very helpful!
my pleasure!
I’m in the market for a used car-would prefer less than 50,000 miles and a 4 door sedan. Any DM readers looking to sell?
Just a reminder that the Decatur Garden Tour will be happening this weekend. More gardens this year.
Very interested in knowing if the Decatur Fire Department will be offering their free CPR classes anytime soon?
Ask Chief Dixon –
Hate to lob a grenade, but does anyone have any updates on the proposed Dollar General for Oakhurst. Went to the beach on the panhandle and visited a few. Gotta say the idea of a DG within walking distance is sorta starting to grow on me…
So you liked them? Good to hear. If a Dollar General, isn’t going to be an aesthetic triumph for Oakhurst, one can hope that it will at least be useful.
Whoops, violated promise to self to stop posting on this topic. Stop tempting me DMers!
“Aesthetic Triumph” would be a good name for a band. (Just trying to change the topic from DG…)
Honestly, they are not nearly as bad on the inside as they are on the outside.
The convenience factor would be HUGE having one in Oakhurst (IMHO). I just hope that if it does turn out to be true there will be an opportunity for community input on the exterior, streetscaping, parking lot improvements, etc.
am i the only one that has problems when DM posts video to the site? The site crashes when I try to log on from my work spam protected computer whenever there is a vid posted to the main pagel- I felt very deprived of community news!
Quit your job!
Who saw Lima Lives! tonight? I did, and I’m glad I did. Wish it would be there forever.
Why does the Coming Soon diner keep their lights and ceiling fans going 24 hours a day? Seems like sort of a waste of energy.
Bo, I’ve thought the same thing! Huge waste of energy.
anyone going to this?
http://atlantazombieapocalypse.com/index.html
it’s the same place as Safety Wolf
http://www.safetywolf.com/
its about 5 minutes south of the drive in.

I think i’m gonna head to in OCT when it’s zombified.
where is the decatur zombie crew!
Zombie Team Decatur!
i cant wait to go to this!
This is laziness on my part (as I could go look for myself), but did anything ever happen in the Nathalie’s Fish House space? I seem to recall a rumor of another venture taking over the location.
Mary wrote in with this question/sighting yesterday…
Has anyone posted seeing an EXTREMELY large cat in the Oakhurst/Decatur neighborhood. I was coming home at dusk and saw an extremely large cat crossing East Parkwood. Not trying to set off alarms but it looked like a small Puma. I was struck by its golden, large, and lean stature and LONG tail with black tip. Kind of freaky but someone saw deer a couple of months ago in Oakhurst so who knows?
Are you sure it wasn’t a giant possum? I lived on Penn in Midtown one summer and we had the most epic, big-cat like possum living ion our basement- it was MASSIVE. Scary three months of my life. It’s giant tongue used to pop up around cracks in the grout in the bathroom. Yuck.
Really?
I am in Barcelona right now and there are street performers all over the place. Does Decatur allow for street performers or is there a ban? How cool would it be to have jugglers, guitarists, etc. all over downtown?
The street performers on La Ramba are imaginative and highly entertaining for tourists. For the locals, my guess is that it gets really old really fast. What we truly need are more festivals!
There’s a t-shirt for that!
