Last night we headed to Oakhurst for Jazz. As usual, many places were packed, but things were slow at SABA. We had a fantastic meal there, though, and the price was great. Remember to support these folks, they’ve been through a lot.

totally agree about saba…we’ve had some terrific take out meals from there and will continue to support them in great hopes of lifting the curse of the doomed restaurant space!

I’m crazy about Saba. The Vegan Vindaloo Spaghetti and the artichoke appetizer are both fantastic.

Adore Saba– but is it a fact that they took the bolognese off the menu??? It was my favorite dish. I pulled the menu up on my Blackberry the other night and didn’t see it. Hoping it was just a browser issue… Anyway, they are the best, especially for folks with food allergy issues. They are super-careful about ingredients. They always remember us when we call and confirm that we need certain ingredients left out. It’s a great neighborhoor asset.

That is an amazing website. I had been using to prepare for a graduate exam. I also took a Kaplan prep class, and this is actually much better IMO for the math, not to mention free. Every student should know about it. If it’s good enough for Bill Gates’ kiddies, I think it’s alright for the rest of us.

        September 24, 2010 at 9:54 am

Yeah, WTF happened?? The first green light headed south on McDonough stays green about long enough for 3 cars to get through. Anyone from the city want to address this? It’s getting very annoying.

Dekalb County handles the traffic signals & pedestrian crossing signals. They’re very polite & very responsive when notified of a malfunction. (Assuming you are polite when you call it in.)

Not in Decatur, but I often see people flying kits over in Freedom Park.

Even though it is still in the 90′s and does not feel like fall at all…does anyone know where any Pumpkin Patches near Decatur? Or where there will be some soon? Thanks!

      • anniefannie says:
        September 24, 2010 at 10:15 am

Visit http://www.pumpkinpatchesandmore.org/ for loads of info on pumpkin patches.
I know they do several pumpkin sales in and around Decatur (Glenwood Academy does one at their Fall Carnival) but if you want a true pumpkin patch you may have to load up and drive a bit….it is worth it, though. We are huge fans of Southern Belle Farm.

Hate to lob a grenade, but does anyone have any updates on the proposed Dollar General for Oakhurst. Went to the beach on the panhandle and visited a few. Gotta say the idea of a DG within walking distance is sorta starting to grow on me…

      • karass says:
        September 24, 2010 at 5:03 pm

So you liked them? Good to hear. If a Dollar General, isn’t going to be an aesthetic triumph for Oakhurst, one can hope that it will at least be useful.

        • karass says:
          September 24, 2010 at 5:05 pm

Honestly, they are not nearly as bad on the inside as they are on the outside. :) The convenience factor would be HUGE having one in Oakhurst (IMHO). I just hope that if it does turn out to be true there will be an opportunity for community input on the exterior, streetscaping, parking lot improvements, etc.

Mary wrote in with this question/sighting yesterday…

Has anyone posted seeing an EXTREMELY large cat in the Oakhurst/Decatur neighborhood. I was coming home at dusk and saw an extremely large cat crossing East Parkwood. Not trying to set off alarms but it looked like a small Puma. I was struck by its golden, large, and lean stature and LONG tail with black tip. Kind of freaky but someone saw deer a couple of months ago in Oakhurst so who knows?

      • nelliebelle1197 says:

Are you sure it wasn’t a giant possum? I lived on Penn in Midtown one summer and we had the most epic, big-cat like possum living ion our basement- it was MASSIVE. Scary three months of my life. It’s giant tongue used to pop up around cracks in the grout in the bathroom. Yuck.

I am in Barcelona right now and there are street performers all over the place. Does Decatur allow for street performers or is there a ban? How cool would it be to have jugglers, guitarists, etc. all over downtown?

      • Dave says:
        September 27, 2010 at 9:03 am

The street performers on La Ramba are imaginative and highly entertaining for tourists. For the locals, my guess is that it gets really old really fast. What we truly need are more festivals!
