Decatur To Buy 4 New Trash Pickup Vehicles
Decatur Metro | August 3, 2010
You might have seen this little fella around town over the last couple years.
That’s because Decatur’s had one Kubota for a couple years now, and even early on city employees mentioned that it was heads-and-tails above the city’s other golf cart-ish trash collectors.
Not only was it a more powerful and effective vehicle, but it also didn’t breakdown nearly as often and was much easier to maintain.
Reporting from last night’s City Commission meeting, Dave notes that Asst. City Manager David Junger reiterated many these points to the commission before they approved the purchase of four new Kubutas at a total cost of around $100,000.

These should be a big hit at “Touch a Truck” Day!
Man, that is a stylin’ ride.
This beats the over-flowing bags in the Decatur pick-up truck I see on our street.
I moved from Decatur to Shaker Heights, OH, a year or so ago, and we have those here, too … they come chugging up your driveway, they grab your trash and recyclables, and then head back to the big truck to dump it. A few little vehicles work with the big truck to take care of a whole block in nothin’ flat, and you don’t have to drag your trash to the street.
I hope they bring back the back yard pick-up! That would surprise me though.
Um, we still have backyard trash pick-up. Everyone in Decatur doesn’t? Maybe we’ve been designated as elderly enough to qualify. But I’m pretty sure that no one else on our street is dragging their garbage containers to the street. Only the recycling.
I will definitely look into why I do drag my trash container the 15 feet from my side yard to the street! And note, most houses on Melrose do not have driveways. Thanks.
I imagine that it does have to do with vehicular access to the back yard area.
these things cost $25k each?
These aren’t Craftsmen lawnmowers. (Apologies to Sears)
It looks like enclosed RTV 1100’s with a hydraulic dump bed. I’d say we got a pretty good deal. The city will probably get 10 good years out of them.
Not that I’d necessarily want the job, but these little things do look like they’d be awfully fun to drive!
The City of Decatur collects residential trash and garbage at the rear yard – assuming we can get to your rear yard. Trash and garbage must be placed in the pay-as-you-throw bags. Recyclables and yard waste are collected at the curb. If you have questions about your pick up, please call the Sanitation Department at 404-377-5571.
the sport package comes with the $25K
