Coventry Gas Leak Fixed; Residents Able To Return Home
Decatur Metro | March 30, 2010From Decatur’s City Manager Peggy Merriss…
The gas leak has been fixed. In cooperation with the City Schools of Decatur, children who live in the area are staying at school for an extra 15 minutes before they are released to go home. We will have fire and police staff in the area to assist any children in reentering their homes and making sure windows are opened and that he house is well ventilated.
We will also begin shuttling persons back from the Decatur Recreation Center to their homes within approximately the next half-hour.
Atlanta Gas Light will be in the neighborhood for the remainder of the day and likely overnight going door-to-door to relight pilot lights.
We will also be issuing a new Code Red message to let everyone know it is safe to return to their neighborhoods.
There were no injuries and no property damage. Thanks to the wonderful emergency management and active living staff who made sure the inconveniences were minimal and gave people a safe, comfortable place to stay.

Only fewer than a dozen people made it to the Rec Center before the All Clear was issued.
Did everyone in the city receive a Code Red call? I don’t think my house was in the affected area, but I did get a call. Now I’m wondering if my gas will be off when I get home.
Everyone got the call, with very specific information about the affected area. If your street wasn’t mentioned, then you were affected. Code Red can only differentiate by Zip Code, I think, not street-by-street.
I didn’t get the Code Red call. I’m not in the affected area.
Yes, your gas should still be on.
Strange we did not get a Code Red call. Not in the affected area. Glad things turned out so well.
Anyone in the City of Decatur who did not get a Code Red call needs to let Capt Boyett at the Police Department know.
Make sure your information is one the Code Red Alert listing, visit http://www.decaturga.com/cgs_citysvcs_emergencymgmt_codered.aspx.
