Welcome To Decatur circa 1950
Decatur Metro | March 3, 2010Next Stop…Decatur has a great pic of Decatur’s welcome sign at the intersection of Ponce de Leon Ave and Scott Boulevard circa 1950.
Looks like Decatur was all about cursive lettering and the Rotary Club back in the day!

Think I like the old sign better.
Me too. The current one is awful. Most generic slogan I’ve ever seen in my life.
I have to say, all of the new signage and wayfinding for Decatur is pretty ugly. Tacky and way out of scale. What they had before looked good to me. The 1950′s one also looks pretty good.
What was “what they had before” that looked good? I liked the logo of church, school, home that was multi-color.
As usual, I’m in the minority, because I kind of like our logo, although more the previous version in color without the lights. I wonder if they did any focus testing of the current logo and signage. Knowing the inclusive style of the City, my guess is yes.
The multi-color logo was what I was referring to. I think you’re right—the multiple colors was what was working for it. Now it just looks drab.
I haven’t heard about any focus studies, but you might be right considering the way the city usually works. I am familiar with the the firm that designed the signage, and their Decatur work is not up-to-par with their other work. It’s disappointing.
I’m getting a bit negative here. It’s just one of the few things that really bugs me about our beloved little town.
The only good thing I can say about the new signs is that you can’t miss them – they are that ugly and out of character. And what is up with those faux lights? Or am I the only one who does not understand this design? Or some of the abbreviations?
I cannot stand the abbreviations. Use a smaller font or figure something else out.
Everyone is a designer all of a sudden. Oh, wait, I still live in Decatur. Nevermind.
Yeah, and everyone wants to be in a focus group.
BTW, everyone will have their opportunity soon. Don’t forget:

It’s a little odd that a small abstract church has replaced the Rotary Club logo.
I believe you mean “place of worship”.
No, it looks like a church to me.
Yep…the new sign is just plain odd in structure, balance, and is blah.
Maybe some plants to cover those two little columns supporting the brown and tan beast?
I keep waiting for some secret garden club ninjas to take over that plot of land, put in some plants, and paint that plug- ugly sign in cheerful, welcoming colors.
Definitely shouldn’t under-estimate the power of garden clubs. Don’t forget they single-handedly saved the Old Courthouse from destruction. Twice!
How about a D.O.T. ninja with a big sack of their wonderful wildflower mix?
I agree. MISS MISS MISS the charming colorful logo signs. Our family mocks the new drab signs with the creepy abbreviations all the time. It made the city feel suburban with the fake lights. Thought I was the only one. YUCK YUCK YUCK.
Nah, the new signs are more widely loathed than the short-lived mall- style holiday banners. Too bad it looks like these signs might last longer than the banners did. They probably cost more, too.
