Snow Again, Snow Again, Jiggity Jig
Decatur Metro | March 2, 2010Back by popular demand, here’s a snow post (in March!) for ya.

…has anyone heard any whispers of CSD schools closing early? Just trying to figure out how and when to get the Mom-mobile from work to school.
And I want to know where all the bad snow-drivers are. I’m always hearing people saying, “I KNOW how to drive in the snow, it’s all the other nutcases sliding around out there who worry me!” But we never hear a peep from these supposed “bad drivers”, so I’m beginning to think that everyone THINKS they’re good drivers and just go around blaming everyone else.
Are you one of those terrible drivers when it snows? Fess up!

Tip if you have one of those steep Decatur driveways or McDonough or Scott Blvd. hills get ice-covered: Put it in low gear; gunning it up the hill alone isn’t adequate.
From Agnes Scott athletics dept:
Hey Everyone,
The anticipation and excitement will continue to build because we have to postpone
Agnes Scott’s first ever lacrosse game originally scheduled for today.
Keep your excitement and enthusiasm though because the game will be played
this Thursday as ASC hosts LaGrange College at 4:30 p.m.
Just got the auto call that CSD schools will close at the regularly scheduled time, but after-school activities are cancelled.
Way to show some stones, CSD! I hope their cafeterias have enough bread and milk though.
Giving praise where praise is due: CSD’s emergency alert calling post system works great for weather-related closings/early dismissal! Between their calling my home, cell phone, work phone, as well as husband’s work, we were more than alerted. Thanks CSD!
i have to disagree…i got the very tail end of the call. apparently the recording started as soon as my voicemail answered so i missed the entire importance of the thing. i had to go onto the website to find out what was going on. wonder who i can call to ask about that?
At the end of the recording it says push 9 to repeat.
oops, i guess that doesn’t apply to voicemail.
Yeah, that happens with answering machines and voicemail. Since I got 4 copies of the robo-call, it was easy to piece together the entire message. Not sure that’s something CSD can fix; it may be the limitations of the technology. Interestingly, I kept looking on the CSD website for information and saw nothing. But your post made me look again and then I noticed way at the very top, the small ticker tape going by. I guess everyone’s different in what they notice. I need a great big fat red banner with ***IMPORTANT UPDATE!!! jumping out at me or my peripheral vision dismisses the announcement as an ad or spam.
So, your mom-mobile is all set?
I wonder why the school system doesn’t ALSO e-mail everybody about the closing. Seems like it would be easy enough to do.
Email doesn’t seem to be used as much as it could be in CSD. The PTA/Os and booster orgs use it more. For a long while, it seemed like educators were the last to catch on to electronic communication. Now a majority of classroom teachers seem to use email well. I have a feeling that email is still underused because:
1. Telephone coverage among families is still higher than email coverage
2. Families are required to provide their telephone contact info but not their email addresses, although I think many are willing to do both
3. Administrators are understandably wary of email’s potential to spread misinformation or errors
Nonetheless, I think email alerts would be a useful adjunct to robo-calls in certain situations, e.g. school closings. Basically, you want to aim the info at parents from as many directions as possible, hoping that at least one of them hits the target.
