DeKalb Avenue Freezes Over
Decatur Metro | January 5, 2010This was fun.
Atlanta police barricaded DeKalb Avenue, a busy thoroughfare through Atlanta’s east side, Monday evening after a broken fire hydrant spilled water for two hours with the temperature below freezing.
I also saw a pretty awesome ice sculpture on the edge of Woodruff Park this morning, created by another fire hydrant that had blown apart at some point overnight.
Stupid expanding ice.
While heading down DeKalb Avenue last night around 7 pm, at least 3 groups of cars slid on the black ice and wrecked into one another. Be careful out there while the temps are below freezing.
Good point. In cold parts of the country, cars would be equipped with snow tires (not sure if studded snow tires are still allowed due to their damage to bare roads but they sure worked great) or high quality all year radials, or even chains when the weather was real bad. Ice gets treated with salt/sand by road crews. Here, you’re on your own so beware. The rule of thumb when there’s ice or snow in Atlanta is STAY HOME. Even if your vehicle is totally equipped and you’re experienced in driving in ice/snow, no one else is prepared and the local custom seems to be to speed up and skid.
Ditto for shoes and boots. Despite warm clothes, long wool coat, gloves, and a wool hat, I about froze this morning waiting for MARTA. That’s when I remembered that boots aren’t just for snow or water protection–they’re for warmth too! Wearing ordinary women’s business shoes in this weather makes as much sense as wearing shorts.
