Decatur Metro Wins Creative Loafing’s “Best of Atlanta” Award

    Decatur Metro | September 23, 2009

I’m tearing up over here.  From Creative Loafing’s Best of ATL ’09…

    Critics Pick

    Best local blog: Decatur Metro

Frustrated that metro Atlanta’s most walkable burg didn’t have its own daily news source, the quasi-anonymous resident behind DECATUR METRO decided to take matters into his own hands. Little did he know that his first post in September 2007 would give birth to the city’s most prolific news source. Half community newsletter, half sounding board for city issues, Decatur Metro is hyperlocal to the core. Daily posts — which are really closer to conversations — have probed the enigmatic aroma that wafts through Your DeKalb Farmers Market, protested the strange garbage juice leaking from a downtown Dumpster, and even veered into coverage about the city’s school system and annexation proposals. The site has become such a destination that even city officials chime in on discussions and answer questions. For his nose for news, clever writing, and creating a needed community, we raise a glass of the Brick Store’s finest. www.decaturmetro.com.

Thanks CL!  While my ego undeniably loves the attention, what really makes me grin is that you guys get it.

    Cheers!

Let me be the first to say CONGRATULATIONS! Now I hope you make some cash from the site. :-)

Eric, you’ll need to convey your congratulations in the form of a $15 classified for that hope to become a reality in short order ;^)

I second the kudos. DM is my second favorite hangout in town. And if you ever find a way to serve beer, it might even become my first.

Given DM’s juvenile (and completely hilarious) post about the misspelling on the McDonald’s sign, do you think Creative Loafing might be rethinking their pick?

Far from it, my good man! If the issue hadn’t already gone to the printers, I would’ve been tempted to add that in there.

Glad to hear that, because that thread just keeps getting funnier! Hmm…funnier…is that a real word?

Yes. It’s the inflective form of “funny”…you even spelled it correctly, clever boy!

Congratulations! My husband and I really appreciate your timely posts about things happening in Decatur. Every time something happens, he says, “Go to Decatur Metro and see what’s going on!” (He’s the one who sent you the video of the thief at his office off the square.)

Thanks for all you do for us DM!

DM, you’ve EARNED that award by your careful choice of topics (both irreverent and relevant), the even-handed monitoring (whilst still allowing people to pretty much speak their minds), and the timely manner in which you get the local news that matters out to us. It’s why your blog has in excess of a million hits, for no longer than you’ve been up & running. Sincerest congratulations to you, and I fervently hope you won’t get sick of us & hang up your blogging shoes anytime soon!

Now, when are you going to add a naughty joke page? (Just kidding– that McD’s sign post still has me giggling like a schoolgirl…)

Congratulations and well deserved. Not only does the conversation take place here on your blog, but discussion of your topics continues in our living rooms and school yards. Thanks for keeping us riled up about zoning issues and giggling over anus burgers.

Congratulations, son!! This parental unit is very proud of you. (I love that you are quasi-anonymous, ha!) Seriously, you seem to set, and meet, some very high standards for yourself in blogging. Decatur is lucky to have you; the folks there benefit greatly from your devotion and hard work. Also, great job on reporting on the recent weather “situation” in the Atlanta area. It’s not easy to monitor events down there from up here in Vermont. Now, onward to the Brick Store! :)

Herein lies clues to the identity of DM!!! First, we now know that DM has a mother. I already suspected that DM was a beer drinker, but now his mom appears to confirm that DM drinks at Brick Store, which means that he indeed might be a beer drinker. DM’s mom seems to claim that she lives in Vermont, which means that DM may or may not have been raised there. Then again, she might only be visiting Vermont. From Mom’s handle (is it okay if I call you Mom?), the VT either stands for the fact that she’s a mom living in Vermont or that she’s a mom and she went to Virginia Tech. Or that DM went to VT. Or DM has a sibling that went to VT. Finally, as VTMom is quasi-anonymous and DM’s is quasi-anonymous, DM might carry the quasi-anonymous gene. Does this mean that VTMom does not know the true identity of DM? And vice versa? The mystery deepens; maybe we know even less about DM. (The more you know, the more you don’t know.) Live Free Or Die! Ut Prosim! Go Hokies!

Dave, “Finally, as VTMom is quasi-anonymous and DM’s is quasi-anonymous, DM might carry the quasi-anonymous gene. Does this mean that VTMom does not know the true identity of DM? And vice versa?” Thanks. :) Glad N…, um, DM has such a loyal following! And as for the mottos, Vermont’s state motto is “Freedom & Unity” (just looked it up). And another clue about where DM hails from, very few people are native Vermonters as any “real” Vermonter will tell you. Cheers!

Congrats DM!! A much-deserved honor indeed!! Thanks for all you do to bring important issues to the table for discussion. A forum like this certainly helps me do my “job” better. And congrats to Mrs. DM as well. Behind every great blogger is a very supportive spouse, so thanks go to her for sharing you with us. Decatur is lucky to have you!

Oh, and Sydney says congrats too. She voted for you….a few times!
