Sydney Rhame Wins “Amazing Kid” Contest
Decatur Metro | July 23, 2009As FM Fats pointed out in a previous comment, Kudzu.com just announced that Decatur’s Sydney Rhame won their Amazing Kids contest! Here’s their blurb…
This contest is now closed! Congratulations to Sydney Rhame, our $1,000 grand prize winner. Check out the talented finalists below, and we look forward to your participation in our next contest!
Sydney is a singer-songwriter from Decatur, Ga. who began writing music and lyrics at the tender age of six.
Audiences are consistently surprised by her age (she just turned 11 on July 19) because of her hauntingly mature lyrics and voice as well as her 5’7″ height! She is also the lead singer of the all-girl pop/rock band, The Lock Outs.
Sydney is a passionate writer and actor, and has written two feature-length musicals and several plays. She loves playing volleyball and is a straight-A student.
When asked how she’d spend the Kudzu.com prize money, Rhame said, “Well, I’d like to get a cell phone since I’ll be in middle school next year, but I really do need to get a decent-sounding guitar.”
Congrats Sydney! Spend that money wisely!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU Decatur Metro and everyone in Decatur who supported me!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE I ACTUALLY WON!!! I couldn’t have won without your support!! And special thanks to Susan Hawkins for making me enter this contest in the first place!
I can’t wait to get a new guitar! Anyone out there have any good suggestions on guitars????
Oh, and hope you can come to the Girls’ Rock Camp performance this Saturday nite at the Vareity- it will be awesome!!!!!
Thanks again everyone!
Sydney
I played your video on youtube for my almost 5 year old daughter today. She loves to sing and perform. She was mesmerized…
Great job Sydney!
Congrats, Sydney. If you are so inclined, used guitars have more soul. I got my my Martin D-28V from eBay. It’s a peach. Look froward to seeing the Lock Outs open up for maybe….. Sleater-Kinney…. maybe?
Right on. And reserve a little of the cash so you can get the action tweaked to your liking by someone who knows what they’re doing. Nothing worse than a great guitar that feels somehow… off.
Congratulation! Midtown Music on North Druid Hills has a great selection of vintage guitars. That would be a great place to start.
Sidney, you so rock! YOU are my guitar hero!
Midtown Music–I second that! They are straight up. And then take it to the guys at Too Many Guitars in Tucker. $35 will get you a good set-up and a strap pin if it needs one.
I got my favorite guitar ever (love it more than my Martin OM28 vintage repro) at Miller Music & Pawn on Buford Highway. You can get lucky there–they deal in a bunch of Alvarez factory seconds. Mine is an Alvarez Yairi cutaway with a spruce top, mahogany back/sides, built-in electronics, and a nice small body that fits me better than a big ole dreadnaught. The bridge had popped off, and the dude at Miller had glued it back on. You can’t even tell. I got it for $400. You could still get that cell phone!
Ooo. I could talk guitars all day.
Allison – you are so right! Funny I bought my Les Paul Custom at Miller’s Music on Buford Hwy when I was 13. Still the only guitar I play all these years later. I have it serviced at Too Many Guitars when I am in need of a set up.
I love consensus! Makes life so much simpler. =)
A Les Paul custom–nice!
For what it’s worth, Sidney, I think a common mistake we gals make when choosing a guitar is that we can end up with instruments that are too big for us. So when you’re picking one out, sit down with it and see how at ease you feel. If you have to lift your shoulders up or wing your elbows out, it’s probably not right for you. It helps to have someone there to tell you how you look holding it, too.
Here’s a good article about guitar body sizes and shapes: http://www.playguitarmagazine.com/article/11/11,6647,FEATURE-1.asp
Like I said. All day.
Sydney, an old friend of mine is widely recognized as one of the best country and rock guitarists on the planet, and he’s been a Martin man for many years, even before Martin started occasionally giving guitars to him.
That said, go to lots of stores and play as many guitars as you can. Then buy the one that feels most right. Ken Stanton Music on 78 in Stone Mountain has a decent stock, and don’t forget Firehouse right here in Decatur.
When I had a middle age crisis and decided to pick up the guitar after 35 years, I ended up with a Seagull. They give good value in an acoustic axe.
