Creative Loafing Gives Cakes & Ale a Fourth Star
Decatur Metro | April 22, 2009CL’s Besha Rodell documents her continual faith in Cakes & Ale and rewards the Decatur restaurant by tacking on a fourth star to its previous three-star ranking.
I think congratulations are in order…
If you’re trying to find a CL in Decatur, good luck. None of the boxes in the downtown area have had any for about 2 weeks.
I love C&A, but am not quite sure it merits four stars. When they’re on, they’re brilliant (the arancini, the fresh local vegetable dishes, the lovely wine selections), but when they’re off, they’re abysmal (the grouper in RED wine sauce–gah!). Still, I’ll keep going, because they’re super-nice folks, and when it comes to fine dining in Decatur, one cannot live by Watershed alone.
Nice to see C&A get the extra props, as they ARE great, but I’m tempted to agree with cubalibre in thinking that they are ever so slightly overrated. And I stand by my previous assertion that Leon’s roast chicken is superior to C&A’s.
My husband thinks Leon’s roast chicken is possibly the best chicken he has ever eaten in his life. I tend to avoid C&A because I was hoping when they opened they would be a store full of cake and I still haven’t gotten over the disappointment.
Well, if you only view their sign from one side…nope, still doesn’t meet the need once inside the door.
Interesting. I really want to like this place but it just doesn’t do it for me. I need to keep trying. But, it’s menu, wine and beer selection (Budweiser?), and service is just all over the place. The folks running it are very nice but that doesn’t translate into a great dining experience. And, I still contend that their beer prices are outrageous. Yes, I KNOW it’s not a bar but $7 seems a bit steep for a Red Seal. (BTW, the Porter in L5P serves it up for $4. But, that’s a different story…). I’m not going to give up on it just yet, though!
Love Cakes and Ale. Consistently delicious. Mmmm phatty cakes!
Since we’re talking cakes.. don’t forget our buds in Avondale. The Cookie Studio has amazing cupcakes (including minis) while the bakery in Avondale (called Sinfully Sweet.. or something like that) makes just lovely cakes and cupcakes. Both very good karma places.
Ate at Cakes & Ale about two weeks ago for the first time. It was excellent. Great food and service. Atmosphere is decent.
The name of the bakery is actually Sweet N Sinful- located on the little square in Avondale
Might I recommend the cupcakes from Button Cakes Bakery (inside Voila) or the full-size versions at Pastries-a-Go-Go as a cure for what ails ya?
Mmmmm, yeah! There aren’t many things that can cheer me up better than a luscious little cupcake. (But the frosting must be real buttercream, or I ain’t interested.)
I’ve been making my own actually and it is so much fun!
Wife also bakes her own, oftentimes, but these are two places she approves of as “doing it right.”
Ask wife to bring me some. I will work for cupcakes.
I need a birthday cake for May 2nd. Sinfully Sweet?
I strongly recommend Bob at Pastries-A-Go-Go. He made our wedding cake. To paraphrase Paula Deen, their chocolate mousse cake will knock your socks clean off and into the washing machine.
If you have not ordered the birthday cake yet, try Southern Sweets – they do the chocolate (and I think coconut cake) at Wahoo and some other places around town. Great cakes, reasonably priced.
To get there, drive from downtown Decatur on Ponce to the Farmer’s Market. Take a right turn (you would go left to go to YDFM) and you will see some signs. They are on a little street on the right. Great weekend lunch spot too.
C & A has not had roast chicken for almost a year?
S’possible, but I had the chicken there twice when they did have it.
