Commissioner Fred Boykin Will Run For Third Term
Decatur Metro | April 18, 2009I guess the alternative title for this post is “The Race is On: Part II.”
Commissioner Boykin writes in and lets us know that he will indeed seek a third term as a District 1 commissioner.
Ready or not, election season has begun.
I expect a strong challenge to Boykin.
I’m praying that you are right.
Hello–I am considering a challenge to Mr. Boykin in the upcoming election. I hope you will take a look at my blog, where I’d like to start a dialog about this possibility. I look forward to hearing from anyone who is concerned about this seat. Sincerely, James Radford

These two recent announcements remind me of that old quote from the Barb, “First we elect all the lawyers!”
Wait, that’s not it. D’oh! (Looking forward to election season again, btw. Especially since our last Decatur one was B.B. [before blogs]. Not really surprising that both announcements appear to have shown up here first.)
Is James Radford the only guy who is challenging Boykin or are there several?
Pardon my ignorance (and lack of time to look it up myself), but where are we in the school board election cycle? Are there seats up there too? Given the fact that we have so many people around town that think they can do better than our current leadership, I would assume we will have people lining up at the door to throw their hat in the ring for a school board seat. But then again, I thought that the last time and three board members ran unopposed – which I thought was sort of shameful. I hope that we have folks ready to walk the walk this time around – whenever it is.
GAK, there will also be elections this year for at least 2 school board seats in addition to 2 City Commission seats. And, you’re right, when it comes to “put up or shut up”, many people are nowhere to be found, but they love to complain after the fact. I wonder how many of them actually even voted? The turnout at city-only elections is historically low, in the 20% range, even with contested seats.
Three school board seats are up this time – that would be a majority.
…and the whiny folks will scurry back under the rugs.
Lord no….I am seriously unqualified. Moreover, I am a supporter of CDS and Dr. Edwards. So I don’t fall into the whiny group…on THIS issue!
Believe it or not, DM actually did exist during the Baskett/McNeely battle of ’07, but nobody read it…thank god.
But yes, things will be different this time around. I’m still determining the best way to handle it. I’ve got some ideas up my sleeve, so stay tuned.
Its guaranteed to be interesting.
There is at least one more person out there mulling over a challenge to Boykin. A familiar name.
Is this your way of announcing your candidacy?
I’m definitely looking for people to run! We seriously need some new faces on the board.
What’s wrong with Fred Boykin as City Commissioner? I understand that Fred is a strong supporter of biking and pedestrian issues, which are my primary concerns. Is there something we should know?
I’m with you, Chris. I was hoping someone would ask that. Can Judd or Joey or, especially, decaturdem chime in with what the objections are? I’ve always been impressed by Comm. Boykin’s ped/bike advocacy.
