    ING Direct Marathon Sunday

    Decatur Metro | March 27, 2009

Even if running 26.2 miles on a Sunday morning isn’t your thing, you might want to consider adding Sunday’s ING Direct Marathon to the ol’ calendar.

    Why?  Two reasons.

One, Decatur needs you to cheer at the “official” cheering station in front of Fellini’s on Commerce Drive at 7am, so the city can regain its title of “Best Cheering Station” in the metro area.  Candler Park took that honor from us last year.  The winner gets a cool $10,000 to put toward worthwhile orgs like the Decatur Youth Fund.

But even if you have no desire hold an orange sign and scream your brains out, you need to know because certain roads in and around Decatur will close throughout the morning to allow runners to circle the city.

Here’s the map and list of street closures.

The cheering section was little smaller than the last two years but I think we made up for it with drums and cowbells! Even though I lost my voice from yelling “way to go! good job!” about a million times and my drumming arm needs Ibuprofen … it was a great experience, the runners really seemed to appreciate us cheering them on at the top of that difficult hill.

I ran the 1/2 marathon, so I didn’t make it all the way to Decatur (wish I did!), but rest assured that the cheering sections DEFINITELY help! It’s great motivation for us to see people cheering us on as we’re struggling up a hill and our legs are on the verge of giving out. Much appreciated! THANKS! :)

This was my third year running the full marathon through Decatur and y’all did an awesome job of cheering! Decatur is a favorite part of the race for many people and this is one of the reasons why. Thanks!

I just received an email inviting me to vote for my favorite hydration station and neighborhood cheering zone. Since I only did the half, I didn’t see Decatur, but I voted for us anyway (is that cheating?) in both. For the cheering zone, currently, Decatur is in 2nd place with 25% of the votes, trialing behind Poncey Highland, which has 47% ov the votes.

      and when does voting stop?

how did you find out who is in first and second for the cheer zone?
