Carl and FM Fats note that there’s a sign in the window of the former Silk: A Smoothie Cafe announcing a new pizza cafe along W. College: Avellino’s.

Great to see businesses are still coming into Decatur in this economy!  Welcome Avellino’s!

      Welcome to the hood!

If executed well this will be a much needed concept. But, as we have seen in many neighborhood places, it is all in the execution.

Yahoo. We need another pizza place ;-)
      Good luck to them.

      Yeah…Johnny’s, Mellow, Oz, MOJOs, Fellini’s!
Plus the delivery options of Pizza Hut, Domino’s, etc.
Kinda think pizza is covered in Decatur.

Hope they didn’t sign a long lease.

Seriously, hope they can make a go of this.

I’ve been seeing activity in the building in the past few days, so I was wondering who was going into that space. Awesome. Thanks, Carol, FM Fats, and Decatur Metro for being my reliable source of information!

You forgot about Zucca (sp?)! That makes even more!

    6. Scott says:
      March 10, 2009 at 10:54 am

Plus Avondale Pizza just to the east, Urban Pie just to the southwest, Athens Pizza just to the north…

      March 10, 2009 at 12:06 pm

Savage is coming to Avondale Estates as well!

Duck’s Cosmic Kitchen has pizzas too, and they rock!

When and where in Avondale is Savage Pizza going to be?

      March 10, 2009 at 3:33 pm

That is a great location! Cant wait to check it out! Hopefully they deliver – that is lacking in Decatur!

Good to know what it is. I was hoping 5th Earl was going in there, but guess we’ll have to wait to see where they end up. Maybe they could take the space where Moxie’s was.

And don’t forget the incredible Capozzi’s Pizza at North Decatur & Clairmont. Yum! (Great NY style slices and italian dishes.) But that said, maybe this place will have a specialty of some sort that sets them apart. Welcome to Decatur, and best of luck to you!

My wife and I chuckled as we passed this sign yesterday. Want a good concept for “this” area? Two words- Chinese Delivery

    14. John says:
      March 11, 2009 at 10:41 am

Jin Jin delivers good chinese food. It is where the Blimpie was.

the one time we tried jin jin we were severely disappointed & vowed to never return. we were disappointed b/c we thought maybe we finally had something good coming in. we need cheap but QUALITY chinese w/ delivery!

don’t forget Savage Pizza. It is under construction at the corner of Laredo and Clarendon. Can’t wait!

The flatbread “pizzas” at Tastings don’t qualify as food. Terrible.

    18. Amanda says:
      March 15, 2009 at 2:26 pm

I’m thrilled. We typically get our pizza delivered from Mojo (3 blocks away), and it takes 45 MINUTES. That’s insane. Hoping this place will be better.

There may be a good number of places to get pizza around here, but not very many of them actually have GOOD pizza.

Really looking forward to the opening of Savage in Avondale! Their pizza is terrific.

Amanda, uh 45 minutes is actually pretty damn good for a pizza place that is not Dominos or Pizza Hut. I have worked in the kitchen and on the floor at Everybody’s and trust me, it takes 20-30 minutes just to bake a raw pie.

I’ve never had Avondale Pizza Cafe take that long and I think theirs is pretty good.

    19. SAACJack says:
      March 16, 2009 at 10:54 am

45 minutes…THE HORROR! They should be run out of town! Was there a pizza emergency?

Frankly, other than frozen varieties, most pizza by definition is GOOD…I mean we are not talking high cuisine for goodness sake.

Avellino’s owner comes from long line of pizza making with ancestors still baking pizza pies in Italy and all over the East coast. He and his brother opened a pizza shop together downtown years ago and introduced the sheet pizza to the public with much satisfaction. Their pizza is well known in and around greater NY NJ and PA and many pizza parlors purchase their families dough from their bakery for retail. The brothers worked side by side for nearly three decades until they finally went their separate ways, Thus the birth of Avellino’s. Its not your typical pizza and nothing in Atlanta compares. Its not that its any better or worse for that matter, its just a different pizza pie that is truly delicious and comforting.

I went to zucca in decatur this weekend and by NO means is that good pizza. Zucca is a bar with BAD bar food, let alone a PIZZERIA. Someone mentioned incredible Capozzi’s….they don’t even know how to spell PIZZERIA what makes you think they can make pizza?? I cant wait to try something NEW around here. I read that Kevin Rathbun said DiRienzos Delicatessen in downtown Atlanta had the best pizza. If he likes it I am sure its good, he has 2 of the best places In Atlanta and that Chef definitely has food credibility. Good luck Avellino’s I cant wait to try it and comment, i am critical but thats what food critics do!!

I tried Zucca again this weekend. Jonathan is right. It aint good. I was excited when they opened, they bill themselves as quite the pizza joint. Seriously, crust was flavorless, like carboard. Sauce, out of a jar maybe? Perhaps the worst tasting pizza I’ve had recently.
This is my third lame pie from them. I’m done.
I went easy on them on my blog ;-)

You’re forgetting Zucca, Feast, and Little Azio, not to mention the flatbread pizzas at Tastings.

Oh, yeah and that Fuel place in Kirkwood.

      Mojo delivers

      Also Athens Pizza delivery

    27. FM Fats says:
      March 11, 2009 at 7:38 am

Fuel has been renamed Urban Pie. They deliver as well.

    28. Scott says:
      March 11, 2009 at 7:38 am

Yeah, Fuel had to give up their name for some sort of trademark infringement issue or something. They’re Urban Pie now. Same folks though.

    29. Scott says:
      March 11, 2009 at 7:40 am

      D’oh. You’re too quick, Fats!

    30. RustyDiamond says:
      March 11, 2009 at 11:06 am

Yes they do, but we could use another by Oakhurst IMO.

    31. FM Fats says:
      March 11, 2009 at 3:12 pm

I’ve always been amazed that there isn’t a Chinese place in Oakhurst while there are two Latin places. Might be the thing to break the Heaping Bowl/Low Country/Melton’s/Oakhurst Grill/Calavino’s curse. Or maybe someone will open a pizza place there…

    32. RustyDiamond says:
      March 11, 2009 at 6:04 pm

Although not traditional Chinese, Doc Chey’s would kill it in that space. That or a BBQ joint…with sweet smoke waffing in the air all throughout Oakhurst…aahhh!
