    Eyeworks Press Release

    Decatur Metro | December 20, 2008

Eyeworks, which I recently opened up in the 335 building, sent me a copy of their press release a couple days back.  I thought it might be of interest since it provides a few more details on the business…

Eyeworks of Decatur is pleased to announce its optical store’s GRAND OPENING in the heart of downtown Decatur, Georgia. Eyeworks of Decatur offers not only the latest fashions from some of the most well known designers but also offers its clients unique and contemporary eyewear from some of the most complimented new trendsetters in the eyewear industry.

Eyeworks offers eye exams including contact lens fittings and specializes in Progressive Lenses and difficult prescriptions. Most eye care insurance plans are welcome along with all walk-ins. Eyeworks of Decatur also accommodates its patients’ busy schedules with after-hours eye exams with appointment.

“We are very excited to be in Decatur. The community has been so welcoming,” said Dr. Mark Hegetschweiler, Optometric Physician. Patients can use their “flexible spending money” for eyewear and eye care services.

Eyeworks of Decatur is located at 335 West Ponce De Leon Avenue, Decatur Georgia 30030.

    About Dr. Hegetschweiler

Dr. Hegetschweiler received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of South Florida in 1981. He attended University of Houston College of Optometry where he was involved in the student council and served as President of the freshman class. He graduated in 1986 with a Doctor of Optometry degree. He has been honored with the WESSLEY JESSEN award for “Innovation in Contact Lens Care.”

Dr. Hegetschweiler at one time joined the movement of corporate optometry, but became frustrated with what he felt was poor product quality provided to his patients. It was then when he decided to return to the personal optical business, where patient care and quality service go hand in hand.

I got new glasses there last night.

The service was pretty phenomenal, despite it being twenty minutes before closing on a Friday night. I’d definitely recommend it to folks over, say, driving to Marietta to get glasses (what I used to do) or ordering a cheap pair from India online (what I was going to do).

We went and checked out Eyeworks of Decatur last weekend. I’m a big guy and have a very hard time finding stylish frames that fit my head. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find anything that worked for me here, but the staff was extremely personable and helpful in showing me what they had.

I wish them lots of success in the future!

lumpintheroad, please visit Decatur Eye Care in Oakhurst. Renee and Tom are extraordinarily accommodating and will bend over backwards to help. I’ve spent untold hours there trying on frames, having them call other local opticians to see if they have items in stock, special ordering for me, letting me borrow frames so I can get second opinions from friends, swapping out glasses when they simply didn’t work, etc. It is an extremely comfortable environment; they’ll likely offer wine and make you feel right at home. They are longtime Kirkwood residents and Decatur community supporters.

RIP-OFF CENTRAL! I live right above this office so I went in for an eye exam. The price of the eye exam is reasonable ($114 for glasses and contacts). The doctor was very nice and personable. My only problem is with the sales staff. They were extremely pushy and try to upsell everything. They’ll tell you that it’s absolutely necessary to get the higher priced lenses. They’ll charge for scratch resistant lenses (something I’ve never had to pay for.)

First off, their prices are EXTRAORDINARILY high. I had put in a purchase for a pair of glasses for about $400, only to find that I could buy them online for $107. I immediately cancelled my order. Unfortunately, when I went back to get my pupil distance written on my prescription, the sales person informed me that they don’t offer that service along with the eye exam. (FYI – they had already measured by pupil distance for the initial order, but didn’t write it on my prescription.) They ended up charging me $20 for a pupil distance measurement that took less than 10 seconds. (I checked my watch!) This is the first time in my life I’ve ever experienced this and absolutely absurd. I’m guessing because I refused to purchase glasses from them at 4x the price, they were trying to get money out of me any way they could. (I should also add that when I initially told them that I would be purchasing my contacts online, the guy told me they sold contacts for the same price as online. I asked him the price for Acuvue Daily Moist and he told me $40 a box. I get them online for $22.)

I would go to this office for an eye exam, but would never buy contacts or eyeglasses there. They will try to upsell you as much as they can and scare you into thinking that purchasing online is a bad idea, which it’s not. You can save tons of money elsewhere!

I hate when people compare what is incomparable. Comparing Eyeworks of Decatur to buying glasses over the Internet is like comparing a hamburger at Burger King to one at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and saying Ruth’s Chris was too expensive because BK’s burger was only $1.

If you only care about “the cheapest”, you can find glasses for $8.99 on the web too. Good luck, I too tried the web only to receive counterfeit frames with the wrong perscription in them.

I went to Eyeworks of Decatur and had a GREAT exprience. I found the staff knowledgable in explaining options that would HELP my vision. The purchase was ultimately my choice and I didnt find them expensive or pushy. I LOVE my glasses.

Eyeworks of Decatur has really nice, cool and unusual frames – not junky like many of the other eyeglasses stores I have been to. Best of all, they really know their stuff – and ARE LOCAL.

If everyone in Decatur had the attitude that this person did, every business in Decatur would be out of business. I support and recommend Eyeworks of Decatur.

Joanne, his point is that he could buy the exact same glasses online for far less money, not that he could find inferior and less expensive products on-line. If true, it’s a very valid point. It’s great to have local businesses, but the mere fact that they are local doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to charge 4x online prices.

Dem, I think you missed the point. This is not an IPOD that you can buy online or at the Apple Store. The expertise put into making the correct pair of glasses is much more than a frame. Its the right lens type, the coatings, the individual grinding of the lenses and so much more.

How can you possibly know what is best for your vision and perscription through one of these intenet eyeglasses sites? There is no expert to guide you. This is a health item.

I dont know if this person found or didnt find the “exact frame” or just any frame at a price he liked. Like I said earlier, I thought I was smarter and wound up with “counterfeit” frames” filled with the wrong perscription when I shopped for eyeglasses on the web. I think that this customer is giving this store a bad rap that they don’t deserve.

I dont know about eyes and prescriptions but I do know that they are all unique. I tried the Internet route. It is a BAD BAD idea. I now have so much more respect for an optician who has to not only be educated in the field but licensed. Those that think anyone can do that job are dead wrong. They pay a ton not only for their education and field but equipment, that they use to perform these measurements.

Anyone who begrudges a business for charging for work so that a person can give that business to someone else is delusional. Why didnt he have the internet take his measurements?? This person got a deal on the measurement he was complaining about. The optical practice I went to so I could too, buy over the Internet, charged me $50 bucks.

Well, I checked them out recently. I went because my current glasses (from a well known chain) had a lens that kept popping out. I went back to them they tried to tell me it was my prescription in the particular frame that was the problem and suggested I purchase a new pair. (By the way, they helped me choose the frame.)

Turns out that lens was cut improperly (I think thats the proper term) – which the optician at Eyeworks of Decatur showed me. He corrected this for me and now I can wear these glasses without fear of losing the lens. He saved me from getting an entire new pair, which I thought I would have invest in. Eyeworks of Decatur has earned my trust and I plan on going there for my next exam and glasses.
