The Best Decatur-centric Holiday Gift
Decatur Metro | December 8, 2008In the midst of our extremely successful holiday shoping in downtown Decatur yesterday, I conjured up with this question…
If I were looking to get someone something for the holidays that screams “DECATUR!” right our of the box, what would it be?
Taste has cool stone coasters featuring pics around town (including the Brick Store, Twain’s, the Valentine statue, and the Old DeKalb County Courthouse), Turvis Tumblers with Oakhurst and City of Decatur logos, and Decatur-made Starr Brand bottle openers. Of course, Whit’s End has tons of Decatur-based stuff, recently detailed over on their blog.
And I would also recommend a map, produced by the DeKalb History Center, which shows an early 20th century Sanborn fire map of downtown Decatur with a red, 1981 overlay. A great, unique gift for the local history buff in your family. When I bought one a few months back, it only cost a 5 spot!
And that’s just off the top of my head. So whatelse ya got?
The map from the Dekalb History Center is a great suggestion.
The first thing that comes to mind was a Decatur Shops Green Bag (assuming they’re still available). Not only is it handsome and useful and not wasteful, but it also helps save money at shops around Decatur. It’s the gift that encourages more giving. I don’t want to sound like a commercial for the thing, but …I really like it.

This isn’t so much Decatur-centric as Georgia-centric, but I will be getting pecan tins from Greene’s to take with us to our out-of-town relatives.
Also, I totally agree that Decatur is the place to do holiday shopping. I managed to get about 90% of our presents in Decatur this year. Plus, I got my husband exactly what he wanted for Christmas: no trips to the mall.
Like Paula, I purchased pecan treats from Greene’s for all of my co-workers. They have many different sizes/prices to fit your budget. Although they don’t ‘scream’ Decatur, the city is mentioned on the label.
Lain, I carried that bag with me everywhere yesterday and got 10% discounts at 4 or 5 different stores….so obviously, I’m also a big fan.
Paula and Harpua, agreed on Greene’s pecans. We purchased a tin of the pecan lovers yesterday…hopefully it will last until we can give it as a gift!
BTW…those pecans are HUGE! I love the “theirs” vs. “ours” comparison in the shop.
I’d love to see what that map looks like….does it make cool wall art?
I love the map idea for husband, who is a history/map junkie. thanks!
I got some of those cool coasters at Taste, I am getting more made for the granparents with pictures of my kids as they take custom orders, Also getting a set of my friends dog made up,It will be perfect for her as she is hard to buy for and loves her doggys.
Writerchad/decatur mom…I’ll see if the DeKalb History Center has a scan or at least a place where you can look at or purchase the Decatur map.
Here is what we have at Whit’s End for those that don’t want to click on our blog. Thanks DM for posting!

Here’s how you go about purchasing a map…oh and I misspoke. Its not a Sanborn map…its a Land Lot map. I should have recognized it from the lack of buildings.
From Leslie at DHC…
“Yes! We do have those available for $5. They are actually not Sanborn maps but Land Lot maps (they don’t show the buildings like Sanborns). We are also reproducing historic maps from our archives such as a 1921 map of Atlanta and Suburbs and a 1905 plan for Druid Hills among others. The prices range from $45-$95 and we have some in stock while others require a two week turnaround time. As of right now, they can be purchased from the DHC office M-F from 10-4 and it is usually a good idea to call beforehand so we know you’re coming. If there is interest we’ll definitely look into getting them in a store nearby to make it easier for people to purchase them.”
Personally I think the map in a shop is a great idea…but I’m a history dork so take that for what its worth!
