Decatur Vietnam War Pilot's Remains Coming Home

    Decatur Metro | November 6, 2007

    From the AJC...

The remains of an Air Force pilot from Decatur who died during the Vietnam War have been recovered and will be returned to his family for burial 35 years after his death.

Maj. John L. Carroll was flying a mission over Xiangkhoang Province, Laos, on Nov. 7, 1972, when his small observation plane was hit by enemy fire and forced to land, the Department of Defense said Tuesday.

Once on the ground, Carroll, 32, radioed search-and-rescue helicopters that he intended to stay in the aircraft.

Two helicopters attempted a rescue but were turned away by intense enemy fire, the DOD said. Another recovery attempt was also unsuccessful due to enemy fire. That pilot, however, was able to see that Carroll had been fatally wounded, according to the DOD press release.

I bet InDecatur will be able to provide good additional insight into this story…until then…

Sorry, but I have no insight on this story specifically, even though I have strong feelings on that war in many areas.

I’m just pondering what it would feel like to have assumed the remains of a loved one would never be returned, and then have them found 35 years later.

It’s great that the current governments over there are cooperating to help find and return remains.

Incidentally, there’s a plaque for one of my DHS classmates who died a hero in Nam right in front of the new DeKalb County Courthouse. Check it out. Also, many don’t notice the VN flame at the NE corner of the new courthouse property. Also, there’s a plaque in DHS showing all the alumni lost in all wars.

We live free (and can protest aganst war if we like) as a result of their sacrifices. God bless their souls!
