Michael sent in this photo of a new “ghost chair” for Jianchang Wu, who was killed at the intersection of North Decatur Road and Superior Avenue a few weeks ago. The chair sits across from the ghost bike of Paul Taylor, who was killed near the same intersection last year.

I have seen workers from the county taking photos of the traffic on North Decatur from the vantage point of Landover Drive and a crew came out from the county “because of the traffic fatality” and cleared all the kudzu and brush that grows out of the creek into the street.

However, this doesn’t address the fact that there is no where to walk except the street anyway on that side of North Decatur.

These small changes have been documented by another nearby resident, Joe, who took the following photo of the cutback shrubbery and adds that the clearing of the sidewalk…

…helps some, but as you can see from the attached photos, this remains an extremely dangerous place for pedestrians. The sidewalk narrows and loses the grass strip at the creek, making the pedestrian walk within inches of fast moving traffic. On top of that, the sidewalk is crumbling, broken and uneven. If a person were to trip on the manhole, they would surely be hit by oncoming cars. This section of road is right across from Landover and adjacent to the scene of the terrible tragedy that happened to the Wu family. It is my personal hope that the County can replace this culvert or at least the sidewalk with something that removes the pedestrian from the flow of traffic.

11Alive’s John Gerard reported this morning on the death of Jianchang Wu, who he was hit by a car on North Decatur Road at Landover Drive last month.  The video features an heart-wrenching account of the accident from Mr. Wu’s wife and also an interview with neighbors who are now urging the county to improve pedestrian safety along the dangerous section of road.

As mentioned in the piece, the County has said that they will be sending a traffic investigation unit out to the site this week to review what can be done to slow traffic and improve pedestrian safety.  Assistant to both commissioners Jeff Rader and Kathie Gannon have sent notes to 11Alive and neighbors stating “We are going to ask Transportation to get out there next week to take a look at this and then to try to meet with city officials to share information before we have a larger gathering with neighbors. Just need to do some homework, but I will be in touch!”

Oh dear.  Heather points to this AJC report of another fatality on North Decatur Road this morning….

DeKalb County police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred during Thursday’s morning commute.

The accident happened about 8:30 a.m. on North Decatur Road at Landover Drive.

DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish told Channel 2 Action News that the man was attempting to cross North Decatur with a female when he was hit.

Kathy writes in…

We just got an Emory-wide email saying that N. Decatur Rd. was shut down in both directions at the Lullwater traffic circle due to a traffic accident. The email came in around noon, but traffic was even more backed up than usual around 10am. A work colleague said that she had seen numerous emergency vehicles there way earlier than when the email was sent. So, I’m just wondering if anyone has more first-hand information about what is going on at that intersection. Of course, I couldn’t find any information on any other online source.

In a FFAF comment, AMB let us know that construction at the old Blockbuster location in the Publix plaza on North Decatur Road is converting the space into a future Petco. Cue logo…

An intensive Google search (like there is such a thing!) by yours truly revealed that there are a crud load of part-time job openings up on the interwebs for a Petco at 2115 N Decatur Rd Decatur GA.

So that pretty much confirms it!

From a check of Google maps, this looks to be Petco’s second ITP location.  The other in-town store is located at the traffic nightmare officially known as the Edgewood Retail District.
