Glennwood Elementary Stardust Stroll Lantern Parade This Evening!

    Decatur Metro | December 17, 2013

A great event with a great name.   From the Decatur Arts Alliance blog…

On Tuesday, December 17th, Glennwood Elementary 2nd grade students will celebrate their learning with the Stardust Stroll Lantern Parade and book release of SKYLIGHTS II.  The students have been participating in lantern building workshops led by Chantell Rytter during art instruction.  Ms. Rytter has worked on several Atlanta lantern parades including the Grant Park Conservancy Halloween Lantern Parade, FLUX Lantern Parade and the Atlanta Beltline Lantern Parade. The project is generously funded by the Decatur Education Foundation Teacher Innovation Grant.

Two giant lantern puppets and the BlackSheep Ensemble Band will lead students and their lanterns from Glennwood Elementary through the Decatur Square and end at Little Shop of Stories.  Students will then show their collective work SKYLIGHTS II at Little Shop of Stories.  You may checkout last years’ book SKYLIGHTS on iTunes.

The parade will leave Glennwood Elementary at 6:30 PM.  Please join us for the fun or view the parade traveling through the Decatur Square!

Call for Young Emerging Artists Grades K-12 for YEA!

Arts Event on the Square in Downtown Decatur, Georgia

    Saturday, October 5, 2013, Noon-4 p.m.

The Decatur Arts Alliance (DAA) announces YEA!, a new event designed to celebrate the talents of young artists and musicians in Decatur, Georgia. On Saturday, Oct. 5 young Decatur artists (grades K-12) will set up an artists market on the square in downtown Decatur offering their creative works for sale, and musicians will perform. The festival hours are noon-4 pm.

The young artists will gain practical experience in event organization, marketing, and sales of their art work. They will be coached by the DAA staff, with participation by staffers from Decatur’s Children and Youth Services division, who have developed a successful summer entrepreneurs program.

“We are so excited about this unique opportunity to encourage Decatur’s talented youth to bring their creativity to the square and to kindle entrepreneurship,” says Angie Macon, executive director of the Decatur Arts Alliance. “Our goal is for our young emerging artists to have an outstanding experience participating in a community event, interacting on the downtown square with art lovers, family and neighbors. We want them to feel welcome as ongoing participants in the Decatur arts scene.”

This event is made possible by a generous grant from the Decatur Craft Beer Festival.

The application deadline for the YEA! Artist Market is September 23, 2013. Artists and musicians may apply as individuals or as groups. Applications for the artist market and the musical stage are available online at decaturartsalliance.org.
