Bookshelves as the Heart of Home Design During Pandemic Times
Throughout the pandemic, the classic bookshelf became a staple in the background of virtual meetings, especially prevalent among students and scholars forced into online education. These book-laden backdrops, although often just a blur behind the speaker, hinted at a deeper significance. Yet, what if a bookshelf could be more than just a decorative element? What if it was central to a home’s architecture? This concept was brilliantly captured by Archiwave Architects, a dynamic team led by Dimitris Ntoupas and Anna Konstantopoulou, in their project The Green Box. This project involved turning a former office space into a 115-square-meter contemporary residence in Chalandri, Greece, tailored for a young couple.
Driven by the homeowner’s career in education, the design of the home revolves around a bespoke bookcase named “The Green Box.” This piece is not just a functional item but the heart and soul of the layout, cleverly delineating the private quarters from the communal areas. It anchors the vibrant, open-plan living space, while its back side discreetly separates the three bedrooms. The master bedroom benefits from abundant daylight pouring in from the living area, filtered through a thoughtfully placed opening atop the bookcase.
The design of the bookcase itself is almost like a piece of art—it stretches across the entire wall and bends around the corner, with its shape shifting in a dynamic play of horizontal and vertical lines to suit an array of objects and decorative items. The design’s cohesion is further enhanced by splashes of a refreshing cool green color, found on the bookcase and echoed in elements like door frames and furniture pieces, all linking back to The Green Box theme. In this way, Archiwave Architects have transformed the traditional concept of a library from merely an aesthetic feature to an integral, functional part of living space within a home.
