From hope that skims the surface. Remarkable “super-corals” have been found at the Tatako atoll in French Polynesia. In this tiny island, extreme temperature fluctuations would typically be disastrous for coral reefs. Yet, the local coral species are withstanding these high temperatures.
This extraordinary resilience has captured the interest of the Criobe laboratory, the CNRS, and the 1 Ocean project supported by UNESCO. Is this resilience due to temporary acclimatization or genetic adaptation? To determine this, coral cuttings have been transplanted to Moorea, close to Tahiti. If the experiment proves that these corals can pass on their heat-resistant traits, scientists hope to transplant them to marine areas affected by heatwaves to diminish coral mortality.
