Les populations de tortues marines augmentent à nouveau

A Glimmer of Hope Amidst Environmental Crisis

In the midst of an ongoing environmental disaster, there’s a piece of good news. Sea turtles, which are facing extinction threats globally, are nevertheless showing signs of recovery, according to a global study released on April 17.

“Several turtle populations have rebounded, though not all,” explains Stuart Pimm, an ecologist at Duke University in the United States. “On a global scale, the story of sea turtles is one of the greatest success stories in conservation.” Among the initiatives contributing to this success are the protection of beaches where turtles nest and efforts to decrease their accidental capture by fishermen.

The study, published in a scientific journal, examined 48 marine turtle populations across the world. Researchers assessed the impact of hunting, pollution, and climate change on these aquatic creatures and found that extinction threats have decreased in over half of the studied areas.

However, there are notable exceptions depending on the species: leatherback turtles, known for migrating the longest distances, face greater risks.
