Reform UK’s MP Sarah Pochin has speculated that the Labour Party might retract its commitment to reduce the voting age to 16. She suggests that this change of heart could be due to Nigel Farage’s growing appeal among the youth.

According to Pochin, Farage enjoys “extraordinary” popularity among young voters, highlighted by the establishment of three Reform societies at the Universities of Durham, East Anglia, and York.
Pochin, who recently secured a victory in the Runcorn & Helsby by-election, remarked, “The youth gravitate towards him. Suddenly, on housing estates, you see young people aged 16, 17, and 18 approaching him asking, ‘Nigel, can we have a selfie?'”
Farage has amassed over 1.2 million followers on TikTok, indicating his significant online influence among younger demographics.
Despite these observations, a Government spokesperson affirmed that plans to lower the voting age are still on track. “As outlined in our manifesto, this administration is dedicated to broadening participation in our democratic processes, which includes granting the right to vote to 16 and 17-year-olds,” the spokesperson stated. They also mentioned ongoing collaborations with various stakeholders to ensure these adjustments are implemented effectively and in time for the next general election.
Last month, Keir Starmer assured MPs that the initiative to allow 16-year-olds to vote “will definitely be accomplished.”
Recent surveys by More in Common show that Reform has peaked at 23% popularity among 25 to 34-year-olds and has captured 16% of the 18-24-year-old vote. Younes Sadaghiani, a political analyst and supporter of Reform, attributes this trend to the party’s broad appeal among young people. Sadaghiani noted, “A significant shift is occurring globally where people’s consciousness is evolving. People are becoming disillusioned with established politicians and mainstream parties like Labour and Conservatives.”
