Erwan Bouroullec Partners with Flos on Innovative Lighting Design
Renowned French designer Erwan Bouroullec has introduced a plethora of lighting designs throughout his career. His most recent venture, however, in collaboration with Flos, puts a twist on traditional fixtures by allowing the user to dictate the final appearance. Set to be released on July 21, the Maap is a novel wall-mounted lighting system that features a unique Tyvek® diffuser. This diffuser, with its crumpled design, ensures that each piece is distinctively shaped by its user, offering a personalized touch to every installation.
Bouroullec views design as an integral component of a broader context. “Design should not only fit within its environment but also enhance it,” he explains. This philosophy is evident in his approach to the Maap lamp, which invites users to interact with and continually redefine their living space.
The Fusion of Geometry and Nature’s Chaos in Design
Bouroullec’s design ethos frequently explores the harmony between structured geometric forms and the erratic elements of nature. The Maap lamp epitomizes this balance. It consists of a straightforward steel frame and magnetic points that serve as its core structure. The cover, a sizable Tyvek envelope, can be molded into various shapes and curves, ensuring that each lamp is genuinely unique to its setting.

“Maap is designed with flexibility and modular principles in mind, making it an ideal candidate for architectural experimentation,” states Bouroullec. He emphasizes the concept of providing adaptable solutions over fixed designs, promoting collaboration and creativity over mere execution.
Durable Materials and Versatile Design
The delicate appearance of Maap’s outer shell belies its durability. Originally considering paper, Bouroullec chose Tyvek after finding paper too perishable for the lamp’s needs. Tyvek is not only tear-resistant but also incredibly light, allowing for easy manipulation and repeated reshaping without loss of form. The design incorporates large magnetic ‘Dots’ that affix the Tyvek material to the steel frame, permitting ongoing repositioning and reconfiguration. This aspect underscores the lamp’s dynamic nature, meant to evolve with its user’s changing tastes and spaces.
Transformative Lighting for Large Spaces
Maap is available in three sizes, with the largest model extending over 10 feet in width. This scale allows the lamp to transform an entire wall into a luminous expanse. Rather than focusing on a single light source, the expansive diffuser bathes the room in a soft, ambient light. Bouroullec compares this effect to the natural light of the sun streaming through a window or glass wall, adding a subtle yet striking architectural quality to the light’s presence that is as functional as it is ornamental.
