The quintessential Ibiza finca is both functional and enchanting, crafted to address the needs of climate, culture, and community. Its thick stone walls provide protection from the intense Mediterranean sun, while the use of natural materials promotes sustainability and supports the local economy. At first glance, the residence is distinctly Ibizan, maintaining the foundational principles that define the island’s architecture—its classic cubic form, clean lines, and understated presence. The exterior, with its whitewashed walls, harmonizes with the landscape, nestled atop a hill and surrounded by wild gardens and native woodlands. Inside, traditional elements like stone walls, exposed beams, and robust thresholds reflect the architectural lineage of the locale.

Upon closer inspection, refined details emerge. Microcement finishing softens the rough exterior, sandstone flooring blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors, and a sleek spiral staircase adds a modern touch while preserving the building’s low-profile silhouette.

“We were committed to preserving the spirit of the finca,” Lawrence-Levy explains. “The goal was to avoid creating a space that felt overly refined or impersonal. It needed to feel as though it had always been part of this landscape, yet with a modern ease.”

Interior Design: A Seamless Transition

The interior of the home feels natural and unforced, with textures and colors mirroring the external environment. The six bedrooms and various luxurious bathrooms feature linen drapes that soften the intense local sunlight, while the walls and woodwork echo the sandy beaches and forested areas nearby. Pops of natural red hues, using Rojo Alicante stone, add a local flair, and traditional Moroccan zellige tiles from Mosaic Factory provide a tactile contrast to the clean contemporary lines.

Designed with community in mind, the house facilitates shared experiences. Its owners, a German-British family, envision it as a haven for gathering with friends and family. In the living area, bespoke sofas and designer chairs surround a large, uniquely designed coffee table by Lawrence-Levy. Extended dining tables, both indoors and out, encourage guests to relax and dine under the stars. Plush sofas, deep daybeds, and numerous cozy nooks create intimate spaces for relaxation away from the bustling Ibiza scene.

“The owners are wonderful hosts, so it was crucial to create a space that could easily accommodate large gatherings,” Lawrence-Levy adds. “We aimed for a refined yet comfortable atmosphere. Ultimately, it’s all about the people; the architecture merely serves as a backdrop.”

Now complete, the project captures the essence of Ibiza’s paradoxical nature—a secluded retreat tucked away from its well-known reputation. The isolation that adds to the home’s charm also posed challenges during construction, but these difficulties only enhance the sense of magic in a place where time seems to stand still. This home demonstrates that heritage need not be resisted or merely replicated, but thoughtfully reimagined.
