In a much-anticipated move, OpenAI has unveiled a game-changing feature for ChatGPT users: folders. Now, you can organize your conversations by topic, bringing a much-needed sense of order to your interactions with the AI. Here’s what you need to know about this new update.
Projects: The New Conversation Organizer
While ChatGPT has always been known for its ability to respond to your inquiries, the conversations could sometimes get overwhelming with everything stacked in a simple chronological order. Whether you were trying to refer back to a conversation from a few days ago or trying to pull up a discussion about your upcoming vacation or work-related tasks, finding it could be a hassle. That’s where the new “Projects” feature comes in.
Starting on December 13, users will now be able to create folders to categorize and organize their conversations. For instance, you could have dedicated folders for “Travel,” “Work,” “Interviews,” or even “Home”—whatever makes sense for your needs. Each folder can house multiple conversations, and once created, they’ll be accessible right from the homepage for easy access.

This feature makes it much easier to stay on top of your discussions, saving you from endless scrolling or using the search function that wasn’t always up to the task. You can now revisit relevant discussions more efficiently, keeping all your info neatly categorized in one place.
Shared Knowledge Across Conversations
But the “Projects” feature isn’t just about organization—it also offers some significant functional improvements. It allows you to share context and files across multiple conversations. For example, within a folder for a travel project, you could attach files like flight tickets or hotel reservations, and those files would be available in every conversation within that folder.
Additionally, you can include a shared prompt for the entire folder. This prompt could provide some background information, such as details about your trip or who you’re traveling with, so ChatGPT can personalize its responses across the board. Imagine getting tailored replies based on specific details you’ve shared across all your conversations—it could make your experience much more seamless.
Availability and Upcoming Features
As of December 13, this feature is being gradually rolled out to all ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Enterprise users, with free-tier users getting access a little later. With Projects, OpenAI has clearly focused on making ChatGPT a more organized, user-friendly tool that’s designed to make your digital interactions even smoother.
As for what’s coming next? While “Projects” is already a huge leap, OpenAI has already announced several other exciting updates. These include a new model (GPT-4.5), a video generator, and even integration with Apple Intelligence. It’s clear that OpenAI’s calendar is packed with innovations, and there’s still plenty more to look forward to. Stay tuned for what’s coming next week, as OpenAI continues to push boundaries in AI development.
So, get ready to enjoy a more organized and efficient experience with ChatGPT—your conversations will never be the same again!
