Buscabulla Blends Latin Tunes with Retro-Futuristic Disco: A Delicious Musical Fusion

By Tyler Jenkins

Buscabulla métisse avec gourmandise musiques latines et disco rétrofuturiste

Introduced to the world through a collaboration with Bad Bunny, the Puerto Rican duo explores the theme of love in “Se amaba así,” a quintessential pop subject.

As Benito Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, was transitioning into a global pop icon in the early 2020s, he carefully selected his Puerto Rican partners without abandoning his native language and, most importantly, his homeland. His album Un verano sin ti (2022) featured several of these talented artists.

Among these collaborators was Buscabulla, a duo in both music and life, with an impressive résumé (having worked with Devonté Hynes, Helado Negro, Nick Hakim) and having released an album two years prior that reconnected with the vernacular music of the Isla del Encanto. They notably stood out with their track Andrea on the beach-themed album.

Love, Always Love

If Regresa (2020), their debut album documenting their return to their native island after a decade in New York, was already pop-oriented, Se amaba así takes it a step further. Possibly due to their experience working alongside Bad Bunny, but more so because of its focus on the perennially popular theme of love. With a retro-futuristic sheen that borrows from disco, electronic, and Latin music, Se amaba así offers a sharp examination of romantic feelings.

Se amaba así (Domino/Sony Music). Released on June 13. Live performance at Petit Bain, Paris, on October 29.
