James Howells, a Welshman who once had a fortune buried under tons of garbage, has finally come to terms with the loss of his Bitcoin. After twelve years of relentless attempts to recover his hard drive containing a digital treasure worth an astronomical 742 million euros, he has been forced to give up. Here’s a tale of cryptocurrency, costly mistakes, and mountains of trash.
A Digital Fortune Lost Under Piles of Waste
More than a decade ago, long before Bitcoin became a household name, there were only a handful of tech enthusiasts investing in the digital currency. James Howells, an IT professional from Wales, was one of those early adopters. Back then, Bitcoin was worth practically nothing, so Howells bought 8,000 of them on a whim. He stored the cryptocurrency on a hard drive, never imagining the value it would one day hold.
As time passed, the hard drive was forgotten, and in 2013, Howells accidentally threw it away. At the time, the loss of approximately 8 million euros seemed like a crushing blow. Fast forward to today, and with Bitcoin’s meteoric rise, that same stash is now worth 742 million euros. But it’s buried deep beneath thousands of tons of waste in a landfill in Newport, South Wales.

The Relentless Quest to Recover the Lost Bitcoin
Determined to reclaim what was once his, Howells embarked on a mission to find the hard drive. His plan? To excavate the landfill and search through the mountains of trash, all in the hope of recovering the small piece of technology that could restore his fortune. Unfortunately, his efforts were met with numerous hurdles. The local authorities, citing environmental and health concerns, repeatedly denied his requests.
Legally, they were right. According to the UK’s Waste Control Act, anything discarded into a landfill becomes the property of the site. Worse still, digging for something as small as a hard drive could have released toxic substances, putting both the environment and local residents at risk. A legal detail, but one that had serious consequences for Howell’s ambitious project. He was never granted permission to dig.
A Judge Brings 12 Years of Hope to an End
In 2024, the long-running saga came to an end. A British judge ruled that Howell had “no realistic chance” of recovering his lost Bitcoin. The ruling was based not only on the environmental risks but also on the statute of limitations: more than six years had passed since the hard drive was discarded, making any legal action impossible.
For Howells, the decision was a bitter blow. Despite his repeated attempts to convince the local authorities since 2013, he never had the chance to implement his plan. And what a plan it was! Howell envisioned using drones, robots, and specialized teams to methodically sift through the landfill, covering an area of 2,000 square meters. It sounded like the plot of an action-packed Hollywood movie.
Yet, even if he had found the hard drive, the chances of it still being functional were slim, given the fragile nature of hard drives and the years of exposure to the elements.
A Frustrating End to an Incredible Journey
Howells expressed his frustration with the British legal system, feeling that his case had been dismissed without proper consideration. For him, it wasn’t just about the money — it was about the principle and the chance to make his dream a reality. Still, the judge, pragmatic as ever, concluded that the operation was impossible from logistical, health, and legal standpoints.
So, Howells walks away empty-handed, his dream of retrieving a fortune buried forever beneath a mountain of waste.
