Revitalizing a Gramercy Park Apartment
In the heart of New York’s esteemed Gramercy Park neighborhood, famed for its exclusive green space, a particular apartment was experiencing a lack of openness and natural light. This challenge was accepted by Studio Rosenthal, who set out to rejuvenate the space. Originally structured as a two-bedroom residence, previous modifications had transformed it into a cramped three-bedroom layout. This alteration had not only reduced the size of the living area but also obstructed the natural light. Studio Rosenthal’s comprehensive renovation project aimed to revert the apartment to its original two-bedroom plan, thereby enlarging the living room and enhancing the penetration of sunlight throughout the space.
The apartment’s owners, a couple who spend most of their time in Australia and travel frequently to various countries, sought a serene and efficient haven amidst the bustling cultural scene of New York City. Studio Rosenthal tailored the redesign to suit their needs as global part-time dwellers.
The renovation introduced new wooden floors and discreet lighting, creating a subtle and refined environment. The decor features minimalist elements such as whitewashed oak cabinets, rope wall decorations, and a Lapitec stone island and countertops that unify the kitchen and living space. In the master bedroom, the design incorporates travertine shelves set in solid European oak cabinetry, which cleverly disguises the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Additionally, a Pietra Gray marble vanity in the powder room adds an element of sculptural elegance.

Custom-made furniture pieces also play a significant role in the apartment’s aesthetic. A walnut entry console crafted by Jacques Jarrige greets visitors at the entrance. In the master bedroom, a bespoke, fully upholstered headboard designed by Eric Schmitt features built-in sconces, enhancing both functionality and style. The ensemble is completed with a uniquely designed coffee table in straw marquetry, located in the living room.
