Decatur Police Report Two Recent “No Signs of Forced Entry” Burglaries in Northwest Decatur

    Decatur Metro | October 24, 2013

Decatur Police’s Jennifer Ross sends along this announcement.  Don’t forget to lock your doors.

On 10/23/13 at approximately 10:13 pm, Decatur police responded to a burglary that just occurred in the 800 block of North Parkwood Drive. The victim stated she returned home and noticed her exterior lights were off.  She entered her home and heard a noise coming from a bedroom.  She turned on the lights and observed an unknown male standing in the bedroom.  The male covered his face with his arm.  The victim told the male she was going to get a gun and he struck her in her face with the back of one of his hands as he ran past her carrying some of her property and fled the home. The victim pointed out a side window that was now open and stated the window had been closed but likely unlocked and a plant stand had been moved near the window and believed to have been used to help gain access to the window.  There were no signs of forced entry. The exterior light bulbs had been unscrewed.  A wooden box containing a stamp collection was stolen.  No weapon was used or threatened by the suspect.  The victim did not sustain any injuries.  The suspect was described as follows:

    • Black male
    • Late 20’s
    • Approximately 5’4 and 140 lbs
    • Slight build
    • Medium brown complexion
    • Wearing a dark green hooded sweatshirt and dark pants

On 10/24/13 at approximately 8:17 am, Decatur Police responded to a previous burglary in the 100 block of Coventry Road.  The victim stated he left his home the previous evening and returned this morning to discover items missing from inside of his home.  The rear door was left unsecured.  There were no signs of forced entry. Two laptops, a camera, game system, small safe and jewelry were stolen.

Maybe this is why I have been hearing helicopters in the past half hour.

Broke into the house, assaulted the victim and left with stolen property. Wonder if the suspect had been scoping out the neighborhood for a while that evening, studying who may or may not be home? The suspect fled the home with stolen property either utilizing the street or perhaps one of the two nearby trails dumping onto Kathryn or Hidden Cove Park. This is very troubling and I am happy that neither burglary resulted in harm to the homeowners.

Well, she got hit in the face so hopefully she’s just pretty rattled, and didn’t have any physical injury. She was pretty ballsy to a.) go in b.) tell him she had a gun. It’s probably better to let them find out you have one by shoving it in their face, or firing it at them, instead of alerting him to the fact you have one somewhere, which would presumably give him something to go back for.

Enact a law like Kennesaw. The breakins would probably be greatly reduced.

Kennesaw is crime-free? I don’t get that impression.

If a burglar is in my house, the last thing I want him to think is that I have a gun. All that would do is practically guaranty that he intends to use his own.
