Don’t mean to threadjack (this headline speaks of “Decatur”), but Sobban opened and the comments on the AJC article have ventured into City of Decatur v. Unincorporated discussions. A taste:

“FYI I live down the street from this place, and we’re in unincorporated DeKalb. Whenever I slip and say I live in Decatur, an actual city of Decatur resident descends a rope ladder from the sky above, waving a city property tax bill (school tax highlighted) in my face and telling me I’m mistaken.”

      Ha!

What AJC article? And the headline here says “Downtown Decatur” – a little clearer context.

I know, Steve. I am aware of the difference (hence my apology for threadjacking). I would have linked the article, but I would get moderated. Just go to the Food Blog section of AJC.

And with that, Walrus wins the award for the most grievous example of a threadjack in the history of the interwebs. “Apologizing” for it in the midst of it doesn’t soften the blow to this poor little post who may never realize its full potential now.

…with special thanks to WB for handing out superlatives this week. First the weekly troll trophy was awarded although the week was barely hafl over. Now, Walrus wins the honors for most grievious threadjack. If only there was an award for least able to detect sarcasm…

Eh. Us highfalutin Decaturites don’t pay our power bill in person anyway, amiright?

            October 3, 2013 at 10:56 am

Walrus, I know that you are joking but the truth is that the closing of this office is going to be a real hardship for many Decatur residents as well as people who use the train to access this office. Many people need to pay bills in person because they are trying to stop disconnection or must pay in cash.

I am aware. I was being satirical.

I get that. I wasn’t trying to respond to you just add on to that thought.

            • Steve says:
              October 3, 2013 at 11:18 am

That was all discussed when the move was first rumored. Apparently, the Ga Power monopoly doesn’t understand that. They’ll wonder why they have fewer people coming to the new office, or maybe that’s their plan.

There is an office within spitting distance of Five Points Marta Station. While closing the location in Decatur will inconvenience some there are still options for those who rely on mass transit.

the only people who give a damn about the city of vs. postal vs. area of decatur are the geography nazis that live within the holy city of decatur. everybody else is just fine with a metro newspaper describing something a couple miles outside of the holy city of decatur as decatur (notice the lack of city of in front of it).

regarding the georgia power move, has anyone mentioned trader joe’s yet?

Re “the only people who give a damn about the city of vs. postal vs. area of decatur are the geography nazis that live within the holy city of decatur” …and the school system which has to find space for the offspring of the holy, geographic nazis. There was a time when the CSD borders were approximate in practice and some students attended if they lived nearby, or relatives lived in COD, or they used to reside in COD. Some of them were great students because they came from families who had the good sense to value a CSD education even if they had financial or other reasons that they were not living within COD borders. Some of them are now professionals living in COD. When I became hyperaware of our borders was when students who had been in CSD for years and were even stars on our sports teams had to leave because CSD costs and growth could no longer allow lax enforcement of residency rules.

I’ve met OTPers who honestly believed they would be endangered if they ventured into COD because of all the crime they read was occurring there. So there is a reason to make the distinction “nazi” though you may consider it.

            October 3, 2013 at 1:36 pm

good point. now you’ve got me thinking of all the poor people who are going to head into COD and be disappointed that there’s no Korean-Southern food. maybe we should pass a law to make sure an area that’s been described for years as decatur is no longer mistakenly called that, lest uninformed people be confused. yeah, there might be a reason to make the distinction in some cases, but in many cases, there’s reasons why making the distinction is totally unnecessary, like this case.

maybe i should call the geography nazis linguistic prescriptivists instead.

Perhaps we should pass a law requiring proper use of capitalization.

The only time I even remotely give a damn is when crimes committed in unincorporated Dekalb get reported as Decatur because of the mailing address. But, given the recent crime spree within the city limits, I don’t think the distincition is nearly as important as it once was. Crime is as bad here as in the rest of the county.

            • The Walrus says:
              October 3, 2013 at 2:26 pm

Only time it concerned me was when I had my house appraised and all the comps the appraiser used, except one, were outside the COD (I live close to the line). I actually had to push hard to get him to understand the large difference that makes in determining fair market value.

And, thus, we’ve gotten to the heart of this question. When you start talking about people’s property values and/or their kids schools you have touched some twitchy nerves. The most twitchy. So it seems that the people who don’t get why it’s such a big deal, do not understand the importance of the borders to those to topics.

                  October 3, 2013 at 2:56 pm

i think most of us understand the importance of city limits when it comes to things like schools, property values, taxes… my little anti-city limit talk rant here is directed at the location of a restaurant in a metro-wide paper.

Can you send me his contact info? Assuming he hasn’t lost his license, I know who to use in case I need an appraisal to support a tax appeal.

No worries, I’m sure it will be replaced by some restaurant with $8 beers, $10 glasses of wine and hoity toity food made with quinona. Crap. I can’t imagine why CoD needs more commercial income.

        What the dickens is “quinona”???
