Big Expansion Plans for DeKalb Industrial Kroger

    Decatur Metro | September 26, 2013 | 9:22 am

    From Tomorrow’s News Today…

Cincinnati, Ohio-based Kroger, which last week ended its policy of doubling manufacturer coupons, will soon begin a massive expansion of their North Decatur Square store. The site, now home to the shopping center, as well as a number of outparcels and hundreds of adjacent apartments, was previously home to a Kraft Foods plant that closed in the 1990s. The Kroger store, which relocated over ten years ago from a nearby center known today as Patel Plaza, is currently 63,419 square feet, but will swell to over 110,000 square feet after the expansion. (The sales floor space will be roughly 70% of the total building.)

Lots more info in the post.

Decatur Police’s License Plate Reader Leads to “Follow” and Arrest

    Decatur Metro | September 25, 2013 | 10:30 am

Decaturish has the story this morning on “What was the story behind that orderly procession of police cars following a vehicle that was moving briskly down one of our local roadways?”  Here’s the beginning of the story…

Around 10:45 Monday morning, a Decatur Police officer was patrolling the 500 block of Church Street when the officer received an alert from the vehicle’s automatic license plate reader. (Editor’s note: Did you know they have those now? I didn’t.) The license plate reader told the officer that he had just passed a stolen vehicle headed south from his current location, a 2013 Dodge Charger with Indiana plates.

    The Sheep Are Here

    Decatur Metro | September 25, 2013 | 9:28 am

We received a couple pics of the newly arrived sheep laying waste to hops and kudzu at Decatur Cemetery.  It’s a sight you don’t see everyday, even in Decatur!

Kodac Harrison Publishes First Book, Great Q&A on ArtsATL

    Decatur Metro | September 24, 2013 | 12:07 pm

If you missed his reading at the Decatur Library last night, you may be interested in this great ArtsATL Q&A with Decatur poet/musician/visual artist Kodac Harrison, who recently published his first book of poetry and song lyrics titled “The Turtle and the Moon”. Here a neat snippet…

ArtsATL: Did your interest in painting grow out of your interest in poetry and songwriting, or vice versa? How do you see the relationship between the literary and visual arts?

Harrison: For years I have supported my art with house painting, which gave me the freedom to make my art my priority. That is, I could determine my own schedule. I could tour when I wanted to, I could take off to do an interview, a photo shoot, a recording session or whatever, because I worked for myself. In the process I would use one side of a drop cloth for artistic fun and the other for work. I would use washes [watered-down paint] to tint sections of a cloth. If I had an interesting color, I would apply it in different ways to the fun side.

Over the years some of these became very interesting. Still, I was doing it for fun. On my 60th birthday, Sylvia Cross offered to give me a show at the Sycamore Place Gallery in Decatur as a birthday present. I took her up on it and stretched some of my canvases, which really made them jump.

    Decatur Fireworks This Saturday Night

    Decatur Metro | September 24, 2013 | 10:29 am

    From Decatur’s website – accept no alternatives!…

4th of July Fireworks will be made up following the Concert on the Square on Saturday, September 28th. Local talent, Roxie Watson, will play on the bandstand starting at 7:00pm. Fireworks will take place at the conclusion of the concert, around 9:15 or 9:30. For more information, contact Katie Abel [email protected]  404-371-8386.

Brooke sent in a note wondering if the fireworks might start a bit earlier since sunset is at around 7:30p, but based on the note above it doesn’t sound like it.
