WSB Covers Stepped Up Security at Friday’s DHS Football Game

    Decatur Metro | September 23, 2013

We’ve been having some trouble embedding certain video recently, but Deanne points out this WSB report covering the stepped up security at the DHS football game Friday night.

And though it isn’t mentioned in the report, Decatur beat Clarkston 42-10, improving to 4-0 on the season.

Heard it was a good time and game. Of note, there were a lot of extra fathers at the stadium keeping eyes on the situation, at discrete distances from their students who acted liked they didn’t need the help, but I distinctly heard one preteen say on her phone “It’s ok, Mom, so-and-so’s Dad will be there.”

DHS is 4 and 0 not 5 and 0 unless you are counting the win in the scrimmage game against Holy Innocents that does not count in the standings.

I attended both home football games. Huge police presence at the second game. Too much in my mind. The “incidents” did not happen in the stadium. How does having multiple officers in the stadium & having a bag check help prevent crime outside the stadium?

Better too much than too little.

DPD is probably responding to the criticism that’s often thrown around on this board. They’re doing a darn good job, despite what some people say.

I’m someone who threw around criticism and I’m glad there was a big police presence at the game. A lot of deterring crime is letting potential perps know that we have a police presence and that this that of activity won’t be tolerated in our city. There are lots of Decatur residents who don’t want our sweet little town covered with a heavy police presence, but it isn’t forever– when there is a spike in crime, the police need to nip it in the bud with a big police presence. That deters crime. DPD did a great job catching the perps, but have not been very effective with deterrence. This is a step in the right direction. (And, the break-in on Park Drive the night before fall break had one white perp, so they haven’t caught the whole crew yet.)

” … need to nip it in the bud”

            You remind me of someone…

Ha ha. And for those of you saying “mission accomplished”… Well, you remind me of someone too. ;)

??? I haven’t read anywhere where anyone’s said they think arrests= “mission accomplished.” Mostly, folks just seem to have a realistic take on things and a sincere appreciation for the DPD.

My sense is that the huge police presence wasn’t just to stop incidents in the stadium but to reassure understandably nervous students and parents and to send a strong message to thugs that we have police here and will use them. Plus, planning for the police presence probably started before the arrests of 3 of the 4 perpetrators. I imagine that, if violent crime decreases back to our previous low levels, then the huge police presence at games won’t be needed forever. I’m fine with that as long as on-going issues like lighting and thefts within the high school continue to be addressed.

I’m just glad that WSB accurately referred to this as a “Decatur” issue and didn’t cast aspersions all over unincorporated DeKalb and other C.O.D. wannabe enclaves.

The previous reply was meant to be the imbedded video of Meat Loaf’s “You Took the Words Right out of My Mouth” and it obviously didn’t work. Or does it?

COD Police have caught 3 of 4 suspects and have increased their presence in response to public outcry. I’m not sure what aspersions you speak of.

I think you missed my point. Fats will clue you in if necessary :-)
