WSB Talks to DeKalb Workers Who Helped Track Down Carjacking Suspect
Decatur Metro | July 8, 2013A lot of the articles from the larger news outlets have been recaps of what has been reported here piecemeal. But here’s a segment that adds a bit of dimension to the downtown carjacking this past Wednesday. WSB talked with the two DeKalb County Roads and Drains Department employees who helped track carjacking suspect that morning.
Only Channel 2 Action News talked to two DeKalb County workers who helped police track down a carjacker Wednesday morning.
“We were right up on his tail,” Harvey Carter said about how they followed the 15-year-old.
Carter and Sean Brown from the DeKalb County Roads and Drains Department happened to be across from the street on Swanton Way when the victim was carjacked.

REMINDER: Decatur police leaders will attend the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at the Solarium at 321 W. Hill St.
Thanks for the reminder Rick. We’ll post a separate note about that.
Big thanks to these two kind and public-spirited men. Honestly, I get depressed (and frightened) reading the blustering comments on this site from silly braggarts who fantastize that they would tackle the crime spree with handguns blazing, if they were only given the chance. These guys have demonstrated what true heroism is.
I couldn’t agree more with everything you said! These guys are definitely heroes, and I hope all good things come to them in future.
+1000.
To each his own. Personally, I get frustrated by those who would dismiss as “silly” and “blustering” anyone who expresses a desire or willingness to use a gun in self-defense.
Maybe it’s because, thanks to [edited: no name-calling] like you, all police have to dress and act like Robocop in order to make routine traffic stops. That never occurs to the gun nuts, that lots of guns in so many hands makes policing increasingly difficult, forces police to act like they’re part of an occupying force, and drives people ever-further from the police who are paid to be on their side.
Want to play George Zimmerman? Go ahead. Just don’t come crying for ObamaCare when you shoot yourself in your own backside.
Personal insults aren’t called for and name-calling isn’t allowed here.
What a fool! I would normally try to show you the error of your ways, but since you clealry didn’t put any, and I mean any, thought into your comment, I don’t see the point. Plus, your post is wrong in so many ways, I wouldn’t know where to begin.
But, I will say this. The people who want guns to protect themselves, their family and their home want absolutely nothing to do with Obamacare!
I beg to differ on your final point.
I’m a crazy liberal that loves me some Affordable Care Act for oh so many reasons.
I’m also armed to the gills if some punks want to “visit” my home.
Put me down for all that, too.
Glad to hear, but I never equate “crazy liberal” with “armed to the gills”.
You should.
I may have spent my youth “on tour” with the Dead but I love ALL rights afforded to be.
Except the right to decide for yourself whether to buy health insurance, of course.
Thought you were better than that based on previous posts, guess not.
Take it up with the Supremes.
The Supremes have been wrong many, many times thoughout their history. This is just another example.
I must be the “crazy liberal” because I think the ACA and gun ownership are both bad ideas. But the Supreme Court has settled the legality of both, so c’est la vie.
Is it written down somewhere that gun owners are “conservatives” or “Republicans” and anti-gunners are “liberal” or “Democrats?” Because I know gun owners on all sides of this ridiculous philisophical division.
Silly conversation.

Please help me find those comments from all these silly braggarts fantasizing about their guns blazing. I’ve looked, and don’t see them.
Uh, believe it or not, people have successfully defended themselves from armed individuals with their own weapon. Ask the guy in Villa Rica a couple of weeks ago…
There is nothing “silly” or “blustering” about saying that having the option of protection would be useful is some scenarios.
?? You must scare easily!
How about appointing them grand marshals in the rescheduled parade?
I have read many of these posts, and I don’t remember anyone bragging that they will go out with a gun and hunt anyone down. People have written that they would defend themselves with guns if attacked in their homes, which is reasonable. I have actually thought the dialogue about this issue was very civilized.
These men who chased these guys down could have killed someone in their pursuit. What if during the chase, this kid or these workers had t-boned a minivan and killed a family. Would these workers then be considered “heroes” or “vigilantes”?
I agree that police should be responsible for investigation and prosecution, and that having civilians fend for themselves can lead to bad consequences. However, labeling people as “silly braggarts” or”heroes” based on mischarecterizations of what someone said or based on the fact that nothing bad happened when untrained civilians drove heavy machinery around the city at high speeds lacks a bit of perspective.
I believe these workers were brave, and I believe the man who defends himself or his family with a gun is brave. Both however can hurt innocent people.
Thank you Moderate. While I appreciate that these guys were willing to be good Samaritans, once the police were involved (and there were a lot involved!!) these guys needed to step aside and let the police do their job. The police are the ones with the proper training to engage in vehicular pursuit, NOT civilians in a pickup truck. In fact, I was walking with my two children, one an infant in a stroller, when the suspect drove by, followed by the county pickup. The pickup fishtailed off the road and then got back onto the road to continue the chase. I am lucky that I had the timing that I did or else this attempted do-gooder would have killed me, one of my children, or maybe all three of us.
I would like to agree and offer my support to almost everything written by Dem, Keith F, The Walrus, Stumblin Drunk, Moderate, and to a lesser extent (but still send love to) MC. The over-reaction has not come from those who support gun rights, but from the other side, who demands more and more action from the mayor, Chief Booker, and our police force. Their side will likely dominate the discussion at the Solarium and the Winnona Park meeting but I hope at least one citizen stands and says, “Thank you Chief Booker and all of your police officers. Keep up the good work and please let us know what we can do as free citizens to protect ourselves and our families by using our national and state gun rights.”
The subject of guns did not come up, however it was a very good session. With representatives there from APD, Decatur, and Dekalb I came away with the feeling that they truly are working together and that it is a strong working relationship.Chief Booker kicked things off and then Detective (I think) Richards who heads up criminal investigations spoke about the number of events. Then Sgt. Jennifer Ross gave us some details on the robberies before Deputy Chief Lee explained what they were doing about everything. It sounds like most of the juveniles involved in the crimes are from Zone 6 in Atlanta and mostly from right up Hosea a half mile or so from the police station. Sounds like they have lots of intelligence and so far they are not releasing sketches from the robberies because they think they have enough without making them public. It they hit a roadblock, then they’ll go ahead and release sketches to get some help from the public.
I’m honestly not sure why that got moderated. It’s not because of the word “guns”.
“Every act of rebellion expresses a nostalgia for innocence and an appeal to the essence of being.”
– Albert Camus
Why did I just get moderated? Didn’t even post a link!!
Was it because the word “g@ns” appeared in my post?
