Report: Candler Park Market Owners Looking to Open New Store Along West College Avenue
Decatur Metro | August 14, 2012Wow. Maybe West College Ave really IS the new Ponce. Though Ponce doesn’t even have a market.
Keith F reports from the Oakhurst Neighborhood Assosication meeting last night that the owners of Candler Park Market – in Candler Park of course – are looking for a zoning change to a residential lot residing next to the under-renovation strip that will soon house a bar, a dog bakery/store and reportly a new yoga studio. Here are the pieces of info we have right now. First Keith F…
Interesting news coming out of the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association meeting tonight…at least interesting to me. The developer is working on a zoning change so they can build a new Candler Park Market next to the renovated building. The CPM guys were there as well. Personally, I hope they get the zoning change.
After I whined, he provided this more detailed follow up report…
…They said they shared their plan with the neighbors next to the lot who probably have the biggest interest in whether it changes from residential zoning, and could have the biggest objections. From my POV a new branch of Candler Park Market along with the rehab of the building they’re working on now is a big upgrade and buffer to the residences from College. Also, the guys from CPM said they would be very open to hearing from the community on ideas they might have for what they would like to see in the market. The example they gave was their good selection of German fare in the current location.
Then boogaloo jumped in with some more good info…
The lot they are talking about building a Candler Market is the empty lot fronting College, they are working with the homeowner to make nice and will keep a tree he is very fond of. The building will be set back off of College towards the middle or back of the lot. Rezoning is the next step. In addition to the bar that will take the 2 right spaces of the existing building, the aforementioned dog/pet bakery is signed on and within 2 days a lease will be signed by a yoga studio for the remaining commercial space.
I can’t find any info online about this initiative yet, but I’m following up with other all-knowing parties to see what sorta details we can uncover.

Curious how that setback will play out. Does that mean a parking lot in front? The biggest complaint about Oakhurst Village is how the Family Dollar building has the lot out front instead of being pedestrian focused with parking on the side or rear. Didn’t think we allowed that anymore.
Awwwww, don’t we still get to call it the Big H shopping center? The ‘Hurst can be the H. I’m rooting for someone to make Big H the name of whatever goes into the remaining space!
I am with you.
Agree, Scott. To borrow/butcher a phrase I saw on this site once: Any new building there should make some sidewalk love to the street.
Ha! I believe the exact phrase was “make SWEET sidewalk love to the street”.
Sadly, about 6 posters come to mind when I read that phrase.
Google satellite view shows plenty of room for street frontage.

I can’t tell what tree is going to be saved.
This is perfect. I was hoping that a food market would open in that area. I would love to see a good selection of organic produce. Also, parking in the front would be a big mistake. Although some attractive bike racks in the front would be nice.
+1 on the bike racks and parking in rear. This will be a great upgrade to that current lot.
This is awesome news. I love the Candler Park Market.
Does anyone know any details about the yoga studio that might be moving in to the renovated building?
Was told it was an existing studio switching locations – nothing further
I’d love to see the new market set back enough for a few tables out front, on a patio apron / not sidewalk.
Sort of a thread hijack here but does anyone else have an issue with the current table placement on the lower sidewalk on the Square? Pedestrians now have to thread their way through the YOLO patio bump out and scattered tables and when there is a crowd (like last Friday night) it’s uncomfortable and immediately makes me wonder about fire/safety.
I wonder how this will affect the Oakhurst Market?
Minimal. Much different location and if the CPM stocks the same as the Candler Park location, much different product selection.
If anything, I hope it will make both step up their game. Competition is good.
They are very aware of Oakhurst Markets offerings and want to augment what OM is not strong in such as a more robust wine section, deli, etc…they truly want to hear from the nbhood on what would be preferred, like what was said earlier Candler Park Market has a german section..
Some nice New York State Rieslings would be welcomed.
And the Stop n’ Rob, and Family Dollar, and the Oakview Grocery….
At this point, if you add up the square footage and product offerings of the various Oakhurst merchants, you get the equivalent of a Trader Joe’s. Plus lotto tickets.
The biggest impact might be on Ale Yeah! Candler Park Market has a surprisingly good selection of beers, including specialties and crafts, and they fill growlers. Also a nice wine selection which makes for convenient his-and-her one-stop shopping.
But will they give a nod to their new location and carry Duff Beer and Sprinkilicious Doughnuts?
CPM is my most favorite market in all the land, I hope this comes to pass!
Suggestions for new CPM(O):
* A broom
* A mop
* Lower prices
* Exterior trash pickup
If they cant’ get it right in CP it won’t look any better here. A marginal improvement to Pop and Shop, if I am being asked. Which I am clearly not.
Hooray! I think this sounds awesome!!!!! Bring it to Oakhurst! It will do well on that corner. It will be very convenient for all the parents picking up their kids from Oakhurst Elementary to stop in and grab last minute items for dinner!
Why not just buy out the failing former Dannemann’s? Half the price, twice the parking, it’s just a half-mile down the road, and you’re not threatening the Oakhurst Market.
Really, I’m sure if you just offered that family a job at the new stand they’d jump at the chance to get out from under.
Location, location, location.
Not dinner fare.
Dannemann’s has changed names. I assume it was bought? Anyone know?
A welcome addition to the neighborhood.
Cool. We need a bodega in Oakhurst.
Not that the one by the firehouse isn’t great. I’m just say’n.
