Agnes Scott College Logo Gets a Makeover

Agnes Scott College has a new logo! “What’s up with” it?
Luckily, ASC has a webpage that answers just that question.
Thanks to Steve for the link!

It’s nice. It either represents their chapel…or the fields of wheat growing on campus.
I thought it was just going to say “AGNES!” and have a little swoosh icon. (That one’s for Nellie…
)
Meanie. Pants.
very nice, though, for my taste, the A-G stroke gilds the lily.
“gilds the lily” is the perfect expression for that ‘swoosh’. Otherwise I really like it.
that element has the faint aroma of a non-designer/client request:
client: “you know what would be really cool . . . because when we’re not able to use the arches icon–just the name alone–the A-G swoosh will add visual interest vs. just plain text.”
designer: “well, yes, dear client, i can see that, but in its ‘hero presentation’, where the icon and typography are combined, it comes off as trying too hard compared to the more fluid and effortless effect we were aiming for. but if you insist, well, here you go.”
client: “i love it!”
designer: “natch”
been there
done that
got the snow dome to prove it
You nailed that conversation. Approximately every hour, somewhere, a design team smacks themselves on the heads and wails, “Why did they bother hiring us? Why don’t they just use WordArt and be done with it?”

What was the old logo?
When I see before and after shots for beauty makeovers in women’s magazines, I often prefer the before.
Agnes Scott Tippling Room?
Take a look at the window in picture # 7 on this page – http://www.agnesscott.edu/studentlife/religiouslife/chapel – and you’ll see one major influence on the design. There are arches all over campus, incorporated into almost everything, so…
The design above the name looks like a fancy W for “women” with a graduation cap on it!
Not digging the A-G swash or the missing serifs on the T’s so much. The swash looks more like a smear…
Also wondering how the small window graphic will hold up when it’s used small.
Did they recently get a fencing team too? Looks like a female zorro carved those lines.
The old logo is still on wikipedia if you want to see it
