Just a guess about the evidence, truly not meant to be an indictment of restaurant workers. What else goes along with Mondays? Hair salons are closed too. Thieves have weekenditis and skip work? Maybe the rental rates for a truck to move stolen goods are lower? Maybe the Captain D’s nearby has a good lunch special? Maybe Monday is a good day to sell stolen goods?
When cars were being stolen in our area, I learned from DPD that one should look out for thieves on bicycles on rainy days. It’s logical but I never thought about how rain could make a thief on a bicycle motivated to find a car to steal. It’s not an indictment of bicycle riders.
The whole exercise is ridiculous, though, AHID. The point is there is a burglar about which we need to be aware. Starting some groundless speculation game distracts from that and minimizes it.
Well, that wasn’t my intention, just musing on the Monday comment. I correct myself. Everyone should be careful all the time, with an eye out on Mondays for something happening systematically.
I assume Court House is open and full of people who leave angry after their court day, who have to pay pretty hight fees for their mistakes. Downtown Decatur gets busy and it’s walkable, so they begin to wonder by checking the neighborhoods….
I disagree. I always speculate about where my burglars work. And restaurant workers are already notorious criminals with their drug using and their not declaring cash tips
But really, a more likely explanation is that even career criminals are not immune from acute and chronic cases of the Mondays…
Because of my job, it’s kinda turned out that some of my best friends are lawyers, so I know at least a few of you are not like that. But there is often no better reading than the lawyer discipline reports!
I actually disagree with you on that about 125%. I think the State Supreme Court discipline reports show that the legal profession takes ethics and competence seriously, unlike professions like school board member.
The benefits (health insurance) have been said to be attractive to members of other School Boards too. I’d like to know whether those benefits cost the school systems in question anything. If it’s part of a lump sum coverage of employees that doesn’t cost extra, no big deal. But if it’s a cost to the taxpayers that wouldn’t otherwise occur, a bigger deal. There’s plenty of folks willing to be School Board members so offering health insurance is not a necessity to have a decent School Board. In fact, I trust members more if they don’t need the stipend or benefits.
Looks like we’ll be needing a couple of folks to turn in their jr detective badges…
Let’s assume that this IS their job and mull the appeal of Mondays. The key one is that it’s our trash pickup day– distraction by the swarm of activity. Our antennas need to be up EVERY day because the burglaries in recent months have occurred on different days. Most, not all, are happening in the vicinity of where the crook can quickly exit the neighborhood by way of Winn/Dekalb Ind.
We did have a Monday issue back some time ago before we had a Neighborhood Watch throughout the neighborhood. Seems the crook(s) had a system of montioring folks’ recycling bin patterns. If they put them out regularly, but didn’t do it one week, then the house drew interest. Happened mostly in Sycamore Ridge, but also a couple of other newer homes. (A nearby neighbor had the crook(s) make a day of it. Ate food, and raided the whole house, including the attic!)
We’re also experiencing some thefts from mailboxes turning into identity thefts. On the Mondays theme, make sure you’re not lax with putting your info in the bin. DO NOT put outgoing mail in your box.
Or put credit card applications, financial statements, or anything else in the recycling that could be used for identity theft. It’s bad for the environment but any recycables with personal identifying information should be mixed with the disgusting garbage that is closed up in the blue plastic bags.
Oh, another thing I have learned on DM. Are there small reasonably priced shredders for home use? The shredder at work is the size of a dorm refrigerator and loud.
I highly recommend the Fellowes brand shredders. Got one on sale for about $80 a few years ago. Don’t go too cheap or it will jam constantly. We shred everything with our name and address on it. May be extreme, but we feel better doing it.
Also have the Fellows and agree don’t go cheap. The Fellows will shred a credit card and those solicitation letters from State Farm without having to open them (if they are not too thick.)
For some reason the “I put the boxes in front of my neighbors’ homes” reminded me of this:

Humm, crime everywhere. My honda crv parked in my Oakhurst drive had the catalytic converter stolen right out of it last night. And July 1st last year, my previous Honda crv was stolen out of same driveway. Not Honda fairies, to be sure.
The first house on Pinehurst and Winn Way was burglarized on last Wednesday at about 11:00am. Broke into backyard window and stole all they could before Decatur police could arrive.
These crimes happen fast and neighbors need to watch out for each other and call the police if you see anything out of the ordinary.
I am sure the person who gave the above description is not laughing or joking.
Another house was broken into in Decatur Heights last week in which the wires for the alarm were cut. That one didn’t make it to the neighborhood google group.
Interestingly, many of the break-ins in the Decatur Heights neighborhood over the past year have been on Mondays.
Restaurant worker? Many restaurants are closed on Mondays.
I think that is a really weird assumption to make and it is a bit insulting, quite honestly.

I just figure most of the crooks work at the law office
Hey now, we are not ALL like this guy…

Dude, seriously– I cringe when I read those. That lot make us ALL look bad!!!
I actually disagree with you on that about 125%. I think the State Supreme Court discipline reports show that the legal profession takes ethics and competence seriously, unlike professions like school board member.
One reason may be that School Board Member is not a profession.
Except in DeKalb County, where at least one member uses the “job” as her primary income and benefit source.

I agree 100%
Insulting to restaurant workers? Clearly you have never worked at a restaurant!
Actually, I worked at them for over a decade
i enjoy how people keep these posts fun.
Aren’t Theatres and Museums dark on Mondays?
Damn artsy types are surely to blame!!
What’s odd is the assumption that the burglar has a job at all. (Perhaps he works at McDonald’s?)
Looks like we’ll be needing a couple of folks to turn in their jr detective badges…

You can shred then recycle. Best to have a cross cut shredder.
Oh, another thing I have learned on DM. Are there small reasonably priced shredders for home use? The shredder at work is the size of a dorm refrigerator and loud.
yes…picked up one at office depot a few years back and it’s still goin’ strong…think it may have been about $70 or so…
I highly recommend the Fellowes brand shredders. Got one on sale for about $80 a few years ago. Don’t go too cheap or it will jam constantly. We shred everything with our name and address on it. May be extreme, but we feel better doing it.

So this is the guy with my bikes?
p.s. if you purchase a new computer or flat screen tv, it’s not a good idea to put the empty boxes on the curb–it just screams, “jackpot!” to thieves.
me? I put the boxes in front of my neighbors’ homes.
“I put the boxes in front of my neighbors’ homes.”
OMG, I know I shouldn’t find this funny, but I seriously LOLed…

How many is this total?
