Last year there was an old dilapidated building torn down on Church St. just north of Ponce de Leon (near the Bank of America ATM). There was going to be new construction which was supposed to house the headquarters of the ACPE (Assoc. of Clinical Pastoral Education) which is an organization that is now located across the street from the Clairmont entrance to Emory in a small office building. What happened to that new construction on Church St? Was that project canceled? Will that space be left open?

The last I heard, they’re currently lining up the funding they need to build. I don’t think they’ve announced any sort of construction timeline.

      Everybody wants a little romance
Everybody’s goin’ off the deep end
Everybody needs a second chance, oh

You want a piece of my heart
      You better start from start

        Monday morning feels so bad,
        Ev’rybody seems to nag me
        Coming Tuesday I feel better,
Even my old man looks good,
        Wednesday just don’t go,
        Thursday goes too slow,
I’ve got Friday on my mind!

Members of the Venetian pool and the Decatur community have a real safety issue each summer. While there is a crosswalk and a small flashing caution light in front of the pool driveway, oftentimes children, families and adults are at serious risk when crossing Scott Blvd. I am not a member of the pool, but as a community member, I am concerned that this is a major hazard. Yes, I understand that it is the responsibility of the parents to supervise their children, but I am more concerned about the drivers that are unaware due to the little or lack of signage and caution of this intersection.

      • Decatur Metro says:
        June 8, 2012 at 9:49 am

Any specific ideas? I think the city has limited options since Scott Blvd is a state road.

        • Tessa says:
          June 8, 2012 at 9:54 am

Like you said, Scott Blvd is a state road and it is probably out of the city’s hands. I was thinking it would be more of an issue that the pool board needs to address. Maybe a crossing guard, better signage, more parking on the pool side…..just thoughts.

          • G Mel says:
            June 8, 2012 at 10:26 am

Tessa – As a member of Venetian, I agree that it be dangerous, but don’t see this as a huge issue. The facts are that Venetian has a parking lot and there are surface streets that can be parked on without requiring someone to cross Scott. As for crossing, people need to be smart. There is a cross walk and it’s state law for people to stop for peds. There will always be stupid and dangerous drivers, For high traffic times, like the last swim meet (just last Tuesday) at Venetian, the pool has arranged for police crossing guards.

        • Kilroy says:
          June 8, 2012 at 10:04 am

Ponce de Leon Ave is a state road and they were able to put faux brick cross walks across it. Could that be a solution to raise awareness?

I would also like those cross walks added on E. Ponce to calm traffic some (at E. Ponce/Commerce, E. Ponce/Glenn St, E. Ponce/Sycamore ST/DR). Why does W. Ponce get all the calming?!?

          • Steve says:
            June 8, 2012 at 10:16 am

Ponce where the crosswalks are is not a state numbered road. A faux brick crosswalk was also installed on S Candler, which is a state designated road, and heaven was moved to get it there.
If you want other crosswalks, talk to Decatur Public Works to start the process as well as your City Commissioners, but at least 2 of the intersections you mention have traffic signals with walk lights.

Two of my children are moving in with me this summer (boys, 7 & 11) and I’m going to need a pediatrician, pediatric dentist, and possibly a good child psychologist. Can anyone recommend one or more of these people for me? I’ve looked around on Yelp, but the DM parents have this stuff on lockdown, so I’d really like a recommendation from here than a stranger on Yelp. Thanks! Also, any super secret Decatur Parent wisdom is welcome as well! :)

      • Kathy says:
        June 8, 2012 at 10:16 am

The new pediatric practice on Scott Blvd. next to the Intown Ace Hardware is supposed to be very good.

        • Ted says:
          June 8, 2012 at 10:35 am

My wife and I had a meeting with Dr. Doyle (the PMD @ CorrectMed – the practice you refer to) and were very pleased. While we haven’t taken our son there yet, we are planing on using them for our primary care for him.

As for dentists, while he is not specifically a pediatric dentist, Dr. Schaefer at Blue Creek on North Decatur @ Clairmont is great. Both my wife and I use him, and we recently took our son there. He did very well with a mildly difficult 9 year-old who happens to have significant sensory challenges, making dental visits a bit of an issue.

FInally, I know of a fantastic pediatric psychiatrist, Dr. Eric Fier, whose office is located in Inman Park. He is amazing, but very difficult to get in to see. You can certainly call his office to see what his schedule looks like, and if they cannot accomodate you, they may have other suggestions.

          Good luck!

        • kristend says:
          June 8, 2012 at 10:59 am

Let me add another vote for Correct Med. Dr. Doyle and Dr. Goo are awesome. My 2 year old, who has a history of chronic ear infections and has been to the pediatrician A LOT, loves it so much that she asks to go visit and she pretends to be Dr. Goo with her stuffed animals. The office is brand new with state-of-the-art equipment and the only way it could be more convenient would be if it were actually on my street. To top it all off, the office staff and nurses are super friendly and the parking is free! They can even fill some of prescriptions right there in the office. Oh, and did I mention the extended hours for urgent care? The. Perfect. Pediatricians.

Another thumbs up for DeKalb Pediatrics. We’ve been going there for almost 17 years.

Dr. Wesley Powell is a good pediatric dentist, but at 7 and 11 i would not do the pediatric dentist route–I would just take them to a regular dentist. Thus, I second Dr. Marvin Winter in downtown Decatur.

It’s further away but if it suits you insurance- or area-wise, Children’s Medical Group in Century Center, especially Dr. Jennifer Shu, are wonderful.

Dr. Marvin Winter is a family dentist with a real gentle manner that suits kids. Our kids did pediatric dentist Catherine Enright in the Dunwoody area when real young but one has switched to Dr. Winter now.

Tim & Matt (a father son duo) are awesome and make the kids feel so comfortable and at ease. Plus all the hygienists and staff are wonderful with kids too.

I am leaning towards voting for T-Splost, but every single time I see another one of these stories about the crooks running metro counties, I am a little more inclined to vote No. As I read it, Ellis is basically daring the commissioners to turn down his funding request b/c he knows they aren’t willing to go to court over this. There is absolutely no system of checks and balances at any level of government in Dekalb Co. Each of the crooks pays his family members and cronies and the others feign outrage. Rinse and repeat, all on the taxpayer’s dime.

Not good, robbery at Medlock Park where many of our youth play baseball in broad daylight, 5 PM, not a particularly deserted time of day. Early in this recession, I was surprised not to see more of an uptick in crime. Maybe it just has taken longer to settle in. I’m not sure what the stats show but I sure hear of a lot more crime in my neighborhood and violent crime in the COD and peri-COD area.

Not really Medlock Park, but Medlock Road. If you look at Google maps, the 800 block of Medlock Rd. is just down the street from Melton’s, about a block from where the school used to be. It’s not a high traffic area.

There is a headline on the AJC this morning regarding DeKalb County CEO authorizing construction to begin on a soap derby track which will cost a total of $1,000,000. The commissioners approved the land purchase ($585,000) and clearing ($130,000), but have voted to delay construction. Nevertheless, Ellis let it continue, accruing another $100,000 and needing another $200,000 to finish. The purpose of this track is to host soap box derbys otherwise held in empty parking lots and which is anticipated to bring in revenue of $15,000 per year.

It is these types of decisions that shock the conscience, and why government has no accountability on their spending. At $15,000 a year, even assuming no interest or inflation, it will take 67 years to pay back the investment.

Assuming an average of $5,000 in property taxes per house, the County wasted taxes for 200 homes on this project. It boggles the mind that in these financial times, our local government can be so frivolous.

However, I just can’t comprehend the need for a dedicated track. As porchpal said, Patak is awesome. You can get some of their products at YDFM but the selection there is limited and I’m not sure that they sell enough to keep it fresh. But check out the Patak website for their product and price list. You’ll think I’m lying about the quality when you see how cheap it is, but that’s what really makes it worth the trip. There aren’t many good reasons to drive to Austell. Patak might be the only one.

Also can’t say enough good things about Pine Street Market in Avondale Estates. You won’t find braunschweiger there but their kielbasa brought my Polish mother about to tears it’s so good. I’m actually headed over there in just a few minutes to pick up some brats and smoked poblano sausage for a cookout tonight! It ain’t cheap, but it’s also not in Austell!

I have a 70+ y.o. mahogany upright piano that won’t stay in tune for more than 5 minutes. I’d like to find a new home & purpose for it. The cost of repair is prohibitive. I won’t donate it any of the charities as that just passes the burden of disposal to them. There appears to be no market for its usable parts.

Any woodworkers out there who might be interested in the wood? I’d be happy to help break it down.

This was my mother’s, and my childhood piano. I’d prefer not to see it in a dumpster.

      Anyone have any other ideas?

A HUGE THANK YOU to the CVS on West Ponce and DEJON in particular! I let our dogs out just about an hour ago and no more then 10 minutes later I realized that Stanley was not in the yard. I immediately got in the car and drove over to Lamont/Vidal (our backyard backs up to there) to look for him. While frantically searching, I got a call from Dejon at CVS. Stanley had made it all the way down there and wandered into the store. The folks there tied him up outside, gave him water and immediately called us – a great reminder to make sure that your dogs always have current tags! The security guard on duty wanted to call animal control but Dejon went out of his way to make sure that Stanley got home safe and sound with a detour through the DeKalb Animal Shelter.

There is so much talk on the DM threads about our great local businesses and the need to support them. Just remember that even the businesses that may not appear to be “local” are still managed and staffed by our neighbors who deserve our support and thanks!

Dejon (spelling?) is the BEST! He used to be a counselor at Clairemont’s after school Animal Crackers program and was much beloved by the kids. I still miss him. I think he needed to earn more for college than what one can earn part-time as an after school counselor. But he was a great example of the wonderful, caring staff that Decatur Rec, I mean Active Living/Youth Services, uses in its after school programs.

Thanks for posting this wonderful story so I can congratulate him next time I see him in CVS!

Totally agree with this. Our daughter attended the after school program for two years and still remembers Dejon. She was excited to see him when we were last in CVS, and more importantly, he remembered her. Nice kid (yes, now I feel old saying that) who took care of many Decatur kids. Not surprised to read this story, and glad to hear he is still doing great things!

I rushed frantically there in my gym clothes, didn’t even have my wallet with me, but told him that I owed him for his help and he would have none of that. No worries, I will find a way to repay him. But I’ll bet he will be happy to hear from others that they heard about his good deed and great attitude!

Just got back from a trip to Washington DC and it was such a pleasure to be a pedestrian there. In particular not having to push crossing buttons every time I wanted to walk across the street….sometimes awkwardly placed…then wondering if it’s working because all cars are stopped, but no walk sign, well should I go anyway…etc etc.

They also had great bike lanes which we’ll just never see here given our city layout. They just have so many flat long streets.

So here is a shout out to make the lights and crossing at least in the immediate downtown decatur area more pedestrian friendly.

I’d also like to suggest some no car days on several downtown blocks,,, maybe Sunday afternoon.

Of course this is not the forum to make that happen and I’m low on gumption to make it my cause. But just thought I’d put it out there.

It’s actually open and free to enter all day. You don’t take a ticket or anything, just pay a $6 flate rate when leaving. So you can park for free anytime as long as as you don’t leave until the attendant is gone. I have been known to pay Mac McGee’s $6 for a beer while waiting for said attendant to leave ;-)

                June 9, 2012 at 10:09 am

That’s usually true, Chadly. In fact, the bartenders I see most frequently don’t even ask me what I’ll have when I walk in. There’s usually a freshly cracked PBR and a cold Jager produced in the time it takes me to open the door and walk to the bar at Trackside. Ditto Yacht Club.

But it’snot always swill and shots, sir. Sometimes one good beer or whiskey is all you need. There’s just something nice and filling about a perfectly poured Guinness to accompany a ploughman sandwich. And a Balvenie with beet salad pairing is also hard to beat. Though I’ll admit that, if they carried it, I would probably drink a Pabst Pounder with the Mac McGee burger!

Does anybody know the story behind the large warehouse/building covered in graffiti that you can see from Dekalb Ave just west of Decatur? Recently Georgia Power upgraded a power station on the left side, but there is still a whole lot of “unused” property. I ask because I have a dream that the land could be converted to lacrosse fields.

      • AnotherRick says:
        June 11, 2012 at 10:30 am

With the growing interest in Lacross, that is a great idea. I think the building was formerly used as a railroad car or locomotive maintenance facility and may have some land contamination issues. You should check with the Atlanta Youth Soccer Association to see how they developed the nearby soccer fields they own on Arizona Ave. I know if involved an EPA grant for brownfield (contamination) redevelopment as well as local fundraising.

What’s with 2-4 year old boys peeing on trees in downtown Decatur Plastic Park, while parents encourage and applaud said peeing? For the record, I prefer little boys, my toddler boy included, to zip it until they get to an official john – like the rest of us.

      • At Home in Decatur says:
        June 9, 2012 at 4:13 am

Which is the Plastic Park? The First Christian “Round and Round” aka Toy Park on Nelson Ferry? Is there a porta-potty there? My memory of 2-4 year old boys is that most realize they have to pee exactly 3 seconds before it is too late. So unless one is inside already near a bathroom or there is a porta-potty at the park, one is faced with a between a rock and a hard place choice constantly. I can remember ushering my preschool son constantly off into “woods” around many a park back in the day. If there was no real woods, life was tough.

But open congratulations at peeing in front of everyone does not seem wise. I do remember the time my son decided it would be more fun to just pee openly in our backyard and I had to explain–several times-that we do not disrobe outside unnecessarily when there is an option to use the inside bathroom with no wait. For reasons I do not understand–some Y chromosome thing–boys are a lot slower with toilet training. It seems to be less of a difficult milestone for girls.

        • Dave says:
          June 9, 2012 at 8:30 am

Boys aren’t slower; they’re more easily entertained. I think the urge to pee in the great outdoors is a male genetic trait. Unfortunately, alcohol frequently diminishes the adult brain’s knowledge of the act’s social unacceptability.

          June 9, 2012 at 11:04 pm

Yes, by all means, let’s make sure little boys know they can go ahead and pee wherever and whenever they feel the spirit move them. Little girls, of course, will continue to learn impulse control and respect for their own privacy and the sensibilities of others. Human urine is sterile, but it still stinks when a lot of people pee in the same place and it doesn’t rain for a while — MARTA station elevators, anyone?

You should see dead beasts on the ground the following day. Then, have fun tossing a few sticks from a safe distance to confirm the bugs are dead. Use long stick/ladder to knock nest off once it’s safe. I’ve done this a couple times for bald-faced hornets. I have an, um, big suggestion (does that count as a complaint?) for the Dancing Goat/Decatur Hot Yoga etc. parking lot. It’s a loop around the DG building but the loop is too narrow for cars to pass one another at the distal loop. So, if it’s crowded, like ahem this morning, everyone gets stuck, can’t back up, throws up their hands, and gets annoyed. Problem is that the Decatur Hot Yoga/Fleet Feet/etc. customers think that you enter on the left side of the loop and proceed around clockwise. Meanwhile, the DG customers think that you enter on the right side of the loop and proceed around counterclockwise. We need a convention!

It was not a good day for parking. Later I ended up down at Oakhurst Market to get some salsa and could not find a spot to park. I never realized that the spots next to the market (vs. in front) are part of the Big H lot so there’s a $5.00 charge when the attendant is there. That Big H lot is one weird place and I hope that the Family Dollar/Dollar General/whatever normalizes it but I doubt it.

I know the underlying problem is too many cars for too few legitimate spots, but my problem is also too little time and too much to carry home. Jitney, please.
