Mattress Sale Event on June 9, 2012 to Raise Funds
June 4, 2012 – Decatur, GA – This Saturday, June 9, the Decatur community is encouraged to contribute to a great cause by purchasing a new mattress. Proceeds from this one-day event will support the Decatur High School Band, allowing the non-profit organization to purchase new instruments, uniforms, and fund scholarships for needy students.
“We realize that selling mattresses isn’t your typical fundraising effort,” said Megan Williams, director of bands for Decatur High School. “But we believe there are a lot of folks in the Decatur community that have been sleeping on an old, lumpy mattress for too long. They’ve been meaning to get a new one, but just haven’t gotten around to it. But now, we’re offering an easy way to get a better night’s sleep, save some money on a name-brand mattress, and support a great cause.”
The band’s first annual mattress sale event will be held in the school cafeteria on Saturday, June 9, 2012.
From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., you are invited to test out a wide variety of mattresses on display, in all sizes and price ranges. Featuring top-quality brands and full factory warranties, these brand-new mattresses are offered at a discount of 30% to 60% below retail prices and profits from each sale go directly to support the band. Layaway and delivery service is available and the band will accept cash, personal checks, or credit cards.
To save $50 off the already discounted mattress pricing, talk to a band member or parent to receive a coupon. Students are earning points from each coupon that they will redeem for spirit wear and other prizes. You can also visit http://www.decaturband.org/archives/1171, print out the page, and bring it with you to the sale.
“This fundraiser is part of the band’s long-term goal to allow any student to join and be a part of such a great experience,” said Williams. “Due to the continually rising number of high school students each year, the limited amount of finances available for the school and all its many programs, and the not insignificant cost of band instruments, dues, and other requirements, being a member of the Decatur band can be expensive. Fundraisers such as this help eliminate the need for students to have to ‘pay to play’ – with community support, we hope any kid who wants to be in the band can participate at no cost.”
The band’s fundraising efforts are part of an ongoing Hope for Harmony fundraising program. The 2010-2011 “Tuba Quest” efforts generated more than $7,000 that helped purchase large instruments such as tubas and marimbas. The “Drum Dreams and Uniform Seams” program to upgrade smaller instruments and replace marching band uniforms raised a similar amount over the 2011-2012 school year through the sale of fresh fruit, gourmet chocolates, a car wash, concession stand sales, and other activities. The upcoming mattress sale is part of the 2012-2013 band fundraising effort that hopes to raise $10,000 for band activities, equipment, and scholarships.
The Decatur High School Band includes the marching band, the symphonic concert band, the jazz band, several chamber ensembles, the percussion ensemble, and the auxiliary drill team and color guard. All are supported by the Decatur High School Band Parents Association, a non-profit 501(c)(3) volunteer organization with a mission to support the band by supplementing funds provided by the City Schools of Decatur and by encouraging parental involvement in all band activities. Cool idea. I wonder if they will take away/recycle your old bed bug-infested mattress if you buy a new one?
1. The company selling the mattresses will make arrangements for delivery and removal. All mattresses will be either delivered or available for pickup at a metro location. No mattresses will be sold ‘cash & carry’ that day – they are all sold to order.
2. There will be 20 floor models set up for you to try out in the DHS cafeteria. Park behind the school near the stadium, and our band members will guide you right to the cafeteria door.
3. The car wash will be in operation Saturday morning 9-12 on the upper parking lot. No car is too dirty!
4.The question is often asked – why mattresses? What a silly idea! Did you know that 10% of all US households buy a mattress in any given year? Do you sleep on one?
See you there!
who is the company selling these?
Where on campus is the cafeteria?
Also, is there definitely a car wash? At what time? My dusty vehicle could use some love.
The cafeteria is in between the main entrance and the performing arts center. The car wash times are 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in the upper parking lot.
They should deliver them by parade.
Too funny. I keep expecting this photo to turn into a video ad in which the drill team breaks into a tumbling routine complete with flips and saltos on mattresses ending with a dramatic dismount. Y..e…a……..h! Decatur!

Yup, that’s the kind of images that I imagined from this fundraising. I think if the DHS band did something like that, I’d have to buy a mattress even though I don’t know where I’d put it.
