Nalley Tree Festival on Decatur Square Tomorrow

    Decatur Metro | February 10, 2012 | 2:45 pm

I received this note from Justin a few days back…

This Sat., Feb. 11 from noon to 3 p.m. is the second Nalley Tree Festival in Decatur Square. Several environmentally-conscious community organizations have partnered with the goal to plant 10,000 trees in Decatur and DeKalb County in three years. So far, 4,000 trees have been given away and planted since 2011. There will be a live band, children’s activities and information on how to sustain our community for the next generation.

    And this press release…

Nalley Decatur is hosting the second-annual Nalley Tree Festival on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Decatur Square. Nalley will be distributing free tree seedlings during the festival, which will feature a live band, children’s activities and educational literature from local municipal and environmental organizations.

The Nalley Tree Campaign is a year-round initiative led by Nalley BMW, Nalley Infiniti and Nalley Nissan in Decatur, Georgia. The campaign’s goal is to plant 10,000 trees within the City of Decatur and DeKalb County in three years. There have been nearly 4,000 trees given away and planted since the campaign started in 2011.

“The festival is going to be a lot of fun for the whole family, and the campaign will help make Decatur and DeKalb an even better community to live in,” said Melissa Corey, public relations and communications manager for Asbury Automotive Group, the parent company of Nalley Automotive Group. “With almost 4,000 trees planted, we are on target to reach 10,000 trees by the end of season three.”

The Nalley Tree Festival brings together multiple environmentally-conscious businesses and vendors, including official partners City of Decatur, DeKalb County, Park Pride, Trees Atlanta and Keep DeKalb Beautiful.

“We want to care for and re-plant the urban forest in Decatur and DeKalb so that we can pass it onto our children,” said Greg Levine, co-executive director and chief program officer of Trees Atlanta. “The Nalley Tree Campaign is a great program that helps sustain our community and improve our environment.”

Festival attendees can also sign-up as volunteers for organized group plantings throughout the year. After the festival, the trio of Nalley dealerships in Decatur will continue to distribute free tree seedlings until April 30th. Distribution will resume in November for the fall planting season.

John Madajewski will have a table and be showing his beautiful wood bowls made from Decatur Trees that have come down over the years. It is an amazing tribute to some of the more notable trees of Decatur’s past. I highly recommend checking his table out. I had a bowl commissioned from the post office tree that toppled in the storm last year. It is amazing.

Love that kind of stuff. Will check it out for sure.

The bowls were gorgeous. He wasn’t there, but the bowls are very nicely crafted.

So, how big are these saplings?

Size can vary, I would not be surprised if they have some larger trees, but typically a sapling is bare root and about half the length of an adult arm. I believe they are white oak, redbuds, and dogwoods, that is what they were last year. If you can get them in the dirt quickly, they have a very high survival rate. Honest, it was corrected. I wasn’t hallucinating.

I could use some pretty understory trees.

Both saplings I planted on my property line last year, as well as the saplings the Close Up students planted in the Glenn Creek Preserve, are doing well the last time I checked. I’m glad to see that Nalley is again providing this service. Maybe next year, Nalley can provide pecan saplings so that in twenty years, our grandchildren can have all kinds of fun in the fall picking up pecans. Yeehaw!

Got my two saplings. Dogwoods. Looking forward to seeing how they fare about five years from now.

I wasn’t able to go yesterday. Does anyone know if there any way to still get some free tree saplings?

Brian, you can stop by the Nalley Infiniti dealership in Decatur and get a seedling.
