Come on Decatur, Where’s Your Cycle Pub?

    Decatur Metro | July 13, 2011

Dear Decatur, You call yourself a bike and beer friendly city, but there isn’t a cycle pub in sight!

Tracy sends along this great YouTube video from Bend, Oregon (which off-hand, is home of Deschutes Brewery – no connection to this steerable pub)…

Decatur, once you’re finished bowing your head in shame you can learn more about the Cycle Pub HERE.

      Seems like a great idea.

Keeps drinkers from behind the wheel.
      Doesn’t propel on fossil fuels.
Participants burning calories as they consume.

      What could possibly go wrong?

Nothing. Nothing could possibly go wrong. This is Decatur. We are all completely responsible drinkers and safe, considerate drivers…

Do you think the car pool lane is ready for this one?

Hmmm…I know laws differ state to state, but I do know someone who got a BUI— biking under the influence. Really.

That would be incredibly embarrassing– especially if one were riding the bike due to a previous DUI.

I’ve seen these before on cycling blogs and such – looks like fun!

Big up to Bend! The brewing in that town is insane–Deschutes is just the tip of the iceberg.

I am certain the barkeep is driving, and is not drinking.

I do remember seeing one of these mass-powered bicycle tour “buses” in Savannah when we were there last month, but they weren’t drinking. If they were I’m sure my 88 year old mom would have “hopped” right on.

      I love it!

I’ve blogged about these rideable contraptions:

      http://meetingthesinlaws.com/2010/10/beer-bikes-bans

BTW, a “BUI” is in fact a crime under Georgia law: Boating Under the Influence. Many moons ago, I represented a young woman who was charged with BUI — the charge came just one year after she had been convicted of DUI. One if by land; 2 if by sea, I guess.

They also have one in Savannah:

I am doing it in a few weeks!

So do the people sitting in the rear seats without pedals have to pay more for their beer?

These are also popular in Boston. Would love to see Decatur have something like this.

If you stop pedaling, your beer starts to drain.

This is one of the best things I’ve ever heard of. It ranks right up there with Gandhi/MLK nonviolence (perhaps that’s a bit strong, ok). I can’t say that biking or beer are passions of mine, but put them together and Holy Big Bang Batman! I want one. Heck, I want two!

In the still, I count 8 definite dudes, one undetermined, and one young lady. No thanks.

I resisted watching the videos but am glad I finally gave in. This looks like so much fun! And everyone is forgetting a major point–it’s Bend, Oregon! One good reason to do this is to stay warm! And there’s more women on the pubcycle than you can tell on the still. There’s at least four and plenty in the other videos.

Could we substitute OJ and make this a way to get to school in CSD? Cuts on transportation costs and might be cool enough for the high schoolers.

      • Naaman Gibbetts says:
        July 14, 2011 at 4:27 pm

        Oj?!

        • Karass says:
          July 14, 2011 at 5:15 pm

OJ, pancakes, bacon and eggs, milk on the way to school, all while getting exercise on safe route and vehicle to school, helmets required. I think it would sell to the 4/5 Academy kids and maybe ever the older students. Many birds killed with one stone. In the evening, it could be repurposed to add vodka to the OJ.

Bicycle races are coming your way
So forget all your duties oh yeah
Fat bottomed girls they’ll be riding today
So look out for those beauties oh yeah
On your marks get set go
Bicycle race bicycle race bicycle race

      Bicycle bicycle bicycle
I want to ride my bicycle bicycle
      Bicycle bicycle bicycle
      Bicycle race

Perhaps this can be the vehicle the city purchases for the proposed shuttle between Oakhurst and Downtown Decatur (i.e., the Brick Store to the U-Joint)?
