Anyone know when Sapori di Napoli will open? And 246?
Walked by 246 Wednesday, and poked my head in. Things are still pretty rough, but someone who did not look like he swung a hammer for a living came up and started chatting. Said the heavy work was done and they were working on finishes, etc. He said about a month to open.
Actually also just saw this:
http://clatl.com/omnivore/archives/2011/06/17/gravy-train-ian-winslade-moves-in-at-murphys-no-246-to-open-in-july?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+omnivoreatl+%28Omnivore+Atlanta%29
Thanks for the tip on Sapori as well!
60 tons of sand, live music & family fun! Be sure to come by the Gas South tent at today’s Decatur Beach Party! We’ll be giving away beach balls & sand buckets for the kids! Gas South gives back to the communities that it serves & is a proud supporter of the Decatur Business Association. http://bit.ly/bRkrAQ
Altmod – As fate would have it, I just scheduled the natural gas turn-on for Sapori di Napoli earlier this week! The owners told me they hope to be open by early July!
If you get a chance, try Kitsch’n 155 (where Athens Pizza Express used to be, by the V.A.) – had their cheeseburger yesterday and it was delicious! Less greasy than Farm Burger and tastier than Five Guys and Yeah Burger.
+1 – Great people, and the seared asparagus was perfect with the bacon bleu burger.
Agreed. 6 of us went for lunch today and walked in right around the same time as another 8 or so people. They handled the crush with aplomb and brought us some cookies to apologize for a delay we hadn’t even realized we had experienced. The food was great. The place is fun. And there are even healthy options.
We went in last night for something sweet on the way home. I had a chocolate malt that was fantastic and hubby had the special strawberry shake, too sweet for me but he loved it. We also had them pack up an ice cream cookie sandwich to take home. Sounds like breakfast to me!
Honda only mechanic. Anyone know a good one? Used to go to Avondale Honda, but their service became unreliable.
Does it really have to be Honda only? I take my Subaru to Summit on Dekalb Industrial. They do imports only. Is that close enough for you? I’ve been going there three years and am happy. Also, my girlfriend takes her Accord to the mechanic in Oakhurst Village and is quite happy with them. But they work on ANYTHING, so you might pick up some Ford cooties.
The Honda dealer in Conyers is great. Super nice people. Friends who take their Passport there for service swear by them.
I used to use a Honda only shop in Marietta. Just think that you get better service with a one-line shop. Thanks for the suggestions.
Summit, yes.
+1 Summit rocks!
Yes to Summit!
Quantum Mechanics on Talley Street works on Hondas (they just finished replacing the Element’s master cylinder) and they’re absolutely the best wrench I’ve ever worked with. Clean shop, pleasant staff, and they really love cars. Dependable, too, and very good at keeping you up-to-date on your repair.
+ 1 Love the guys at Quantum. They are great, honest and reliable.
Do you mean Avondale Independent? I’ve been happy with these guys.
+1 for Avondale Independent (only Honda)!
Far East Imports in Chamblee…they only work on Hondas and Acuras. When you pull up to the place you’ll notice all of the old Hondas that all the staff still drive (always a good sign).
There are still a few destinations in Decatur that I can navigate to without having to drive over a speed hump. I’m sure it’s just an oversight, but somebody had better look into it.
+1 speed hump
But I love the constant drone of braaaake, k-thunk, vrooooom.
Ok, I’ve been pushed to do this–and because of my leprous nature, here goes:
DECATUR, LOVE OR LEAVE IT
(Now, are you guys happy? At least you still have anonymous dignity.)
LOL! Gibbetties, I hope you never lose your leprous nature. It’s my favorite thing about you!
Don’t they have colonies for the leprous?
Put that on a t-shirt. I’d buy it.
Decatur Lepers. There’s A Festival For That.
?
That’s going to be a b**ch to get permitted.
listen here, you (Edited: no personal attacks). why don’t you leave, you (edited).
If you don’t post this in a CSD whine session, it doesn’t really count.
Oh crap, you’re right–what’s the Colonel going to say?
My husband has a small photo scanning business, and we’re looking for places that might have a community bulletin board or table for people to display business cards. Can anybody recommend good spots around Decatur? Thanks!
Please tell us more about this — slides, prints or other? I have some old prints and slides that I’d rather not send off to India to be scanned.
Both, runswithdogs… Here’s the website: http://www.dustyatticdigital.com.
(DM, please excuse the link. We’re tiny now, but we hope to buy ad space here as soon as we’re able.)
Why is Mayor Bill Floyd’s house (on Ponce just past the Trinity split) for sale?
Is he leaving us? Not running for re-election this year?
Perhaps like Rick Perry and Rudolph Guliani, Mayor Floyd saw the Republican debate and has decided to jump in to race for the 2012 Republican Presidential nomination!
Mayor Floyd is a Republican?
Haven’t we had that convo before? I think Cuba started it…
AH, but I simply reported seeing his name on the list of contributors on (I believe) Republican AG candidate Sam Olens’ website, if memory serves…
Well Day-em. If that’s all it takes to be a Republican then I might as well change my name to Token2. Half the democrats I know donated to Olens’ campaign because we couldn’t stand our own nominee!
Welcome to the club!
Of course, you’ll be required to vote in the Republican primary, which will be painful, given the completely lackluster, ineffective, and spineless crop of losers running. Ah well, such is life.
I guess I’d have to go with Ricky “My abortion was morally superior to your abortion” Santorum…That, or the pizza guy who wants me to read the Declaration of Constitutional Independence…or our very own Georgia Patriotic Adulterer…yeah, you’re right, it’s a pretty pathetic crop. I hope Sarah makes it official just to add some comedic value to the silliness!
+1 DTR.
A Ron Paul nomination and campaing would be interesting, yes?
He’s not leaving Decatur and the house is under contract “way sooner than we expected”, per conversation with him today.
Decatur Gardeners: how do you keep squirrels and birds from eating your tomatoes?
@ Harpua: I have the effective but unattractive solution of reusing plastic containers that snap shut (usually the perforated kinds that hold strawberries, etc.). I open it up, cut a narrow hole or slit into the side that allows me to slip it around the stem/branch with the tomato, and then I fit the tomato into the container and snap the lid shut. The holes that are already in the plastic containers allow for ventilation and prevent them from becoming too much of a greenhouse for the young tomato. For extra insurance (or it doesn’t “lock” well), sometime I reuse old pantyhose to tie them closed. I have several containers, but as the tomatos ripen, I pick them and move the containers around. It’s not the most beautiful solution, but I haven’t lost tomatoes to squirrels, birds, etc., since I started using it.
Ingenious!
We found a workable solution by wrapping our cages in chicken wire and closing the openings with wire ties. It was/is a pain and I’m not sure if the plants are as vigorous as they would be without the wire wrap.
@ Moonmommy et al.: I have also seen a product advertised (actually 2, I think) made by Bonide (and others) for this purpose. I have not had time to research it (haven’t had BER yet this year) but I believe it uses the hormone gibberlin, which if my very rusty botany serves me, regulates fruit set. Not sure if it qualifies as organic (though I can’t see why it wouldn’t given that it is already produced by the plant), but a little google research should help find the product and give you more info.
PlantDiva,
That is the most ingenious idea I have heard in a long time! I am very excited about this! Thanks.
Now, can you tell me how to stop blossom drop…? (sniff, sniff)
Pick up a solution called “Rot-Stop at a garden center. It’s basically a calcium supplement in the form of a foliar spray. You’ll dilute it in water and spray it onto the plant, all over. You have a calcium deficiency, probably caused by our intense spring rains.
I am on it , Allison. Thanks!
Great idea! I’m going to try it this weekend.
We never figured that out, so we don’t grow veggies anymore– just herbs.
Bird netting or BB gun. Just kidding about one of them. Also, I’ve heard of PlantDiva’s suggestion, only with cheap ziplock baggies with their corners snipped for ventilation.
My uncle used to tell me that we needed an eleven-year-old and a bb gun. Truth.
Giant tent of garden netting erected, big-top style, over my entire garden. They not only ate tomatoes, but eggplants, peppers, whatever. Would even dig up seedlings for things like collards, chard, kale, etc. I tried all sorts of deterrents but this is the only one that has worked for me. It made the squirrels so mad that they exacted revenge by chewing through the wiring on my outdoor lighting. (Yes, I know I’m like Carl and the gopher.)
Does that affect pollination?
Not in the least. The netting gauge is large enough for insects, including the dang cabbage moths.
Where do you get this netting? That’s what I had in mind, but I haven’t been able to find it.
How do you close it off at the ground?
It’s been two years now since I set it up, but I think I got the netting at Intown Ace. The whole thing is held up by poles made of PVC pipes secured in the ground with short lengths of rebar. I secured the bottom with garden netting pegs (they will be right there next to the netting) and then bricks on top of that. There’s basically a tent flap in the front to get in and out of the whole thing. I call it a “Squirrel-Proof Net Tent.”
My neighbors made fun of me. They laughed at me and called it the “Squirrel Proof Nut Tent.” Then they lost their entire tomato crop last year and humbly came to me, begging for help to put up their own SPNT. My help comes with a generous serving of crow for dinner, free of charge!
I sprinkle used coffee grounds all over the plants about once a week (or after a rain). I found that solution on google a couple of years ago after losing all our tomatoes to the devil squirrels! Its worked very well for us and is quite easy since we’re coffee drinkers. I’m having a harder time keeping worms away this year …….any hints for that?
We’ve been using Dipel Dust for hornworms for the last three years. Works great. My husband, a biochemist, refers to it as biological warfare against critters. It contains Bacillus Thurngiensis, a bacteria, which is an alternative to pesticide. Because it is not a pesticide, it is my understanding that you can use it even if you are trying to keep your crop organic.
We’ve tried everything, all at once, and still don’t have a single tomato from the regular garden to show for it this year.
We got a motion-activated sprinkler, seen here, but it is not perfect, and requires a dedicated hose that you have to leave on, which we forget to do.
We got a motion -activated owl, seen here, but it stopped hooting after a couple of days, and then it stopped turning it’s head, so now it’s just a non-motion-activated owl statue.
We put those plastic fruit containers, and some plastic fruit mesh things on the tomatoes as they appear, but the squirrels are pretty determined varmints.
I’ll tell you what HAS worked – those topsy-turvy tomato planters, as seen on TV. This year we put Roma plants in them, and we’ve got tons. Won’t work for the larger varieties, though.
This may be a stupid question, but do you have a birdfeeder in your yard? If not, you should get one. The birds and squirrels will likely prefer this over the tomatoes. I have two feeders, and the birds and squirrels have shown no interest at all in my tomato plants (which are only ~20 feet away from the feeders). It’s worth a shot – the other suggestions sound much more labor intensive….
I’ve heard that they might be after the liquid in the tomatoes more than the meat. A neighbor says they used to line the picked tomatoes up on his deck rail with one bite out of each, but the liquid sucked out.
Do you also have a birdbath nearby?
Try wolf pee. At last year’s Kirkwood festival one of the homes on the Tour of Homes was owned by a chef and he had a test kitchen in his basement. He also had a fantastic little garden out back, and when I asked him about rabbits and squirrels he told us about using wolf urine. He used old pill bottles, drilled a hole through them, stuck a cotton ball inside and put a bit of the urine on the cotton ball. He would then hang them throughout his garden. The idea is that squirrels will avoid where predators are obvious. He swore by the solution. Here’s a website: http://www.predatorpee.com/
To the anonymous person who stopped, got out of their car, grabbed our garden hose and sprayed down the fire until the fire department arrived: THANK YOU!!!
(Postscript: freak electrical fire burned our fence & shrubbery, but no real damage to the house thanks to the help of strangers and our wonderful fire department.)
Ha. Busy week for the firefighters. We must have been typing at the same time.
Scared the bujeezes out of me Wednesday night when I pulled up to my house at 9:00 and it was surrounded by firefighters! Thanks so much to the team from Fire Station #2 for protecting our home, shutting off the gas, and calling the gas company to fix our ruptured pipe. Also, thanks to the as yet unidentified neighbor who smelled the gas, heard the rushing sound from the broken pipe, and called for help.
Baked them Mom’s chocolate chips today as a thank-you.
Who’s going to the Beach Party downtown tonight???
ME!!!!
I’m making a midnight run for sand. Anyone know how this works? Does the city operate a front-end loader or should I bring a wheelbarrow and shovels?
It has been a few years, but I believe you can just show up and take what you can carry. I’ve heard that some folks even show up with pickup trucks. I don’t know about a loader as I think that they just wash any leftover sand away the next day.
You will need to bring a shovel and get the sand. Lots of folks come a bit after midnight after the workers clean the toys, etc out of the sand. Sometime in the middle of the night the public works crew will push any left over sand over to the side of the road and there may be some left in the morning.
Rather than steer you wrong, I’d give a call to the folks in Public Works. They are always helpful and if they don’t know, I’d bet they’d find out or can point you to someone who does. 404-377-5571
Just show up with your shovel and take all you want.
Mission accomplished. My yard and garden thank you!
There shouldn’t be a need to make a midnight run….but I guess that would add to the fun of it. My past experience is there is plenty of sand for everyone. A wheelbarrow and shovel would be fine as long as you can walk it home. I just shovel some sand into empty totes in the back of my car.
I agree with the last comment. No need to go at midnight. I went on a sand run last year, and there was PLENTY remaining when I arrived the next morning. Just park in front of or behind the sand pile on Ponce, and have at it.
Cats all over Decatur are excited!
No wonder my Miss Missy is strutting about my house anxious to get out!
All the cats but Pete since he was blown up last week
I’ll be there. Usually go pretty late.
There’s a giant green waste tote that has been completely blocking the sidewalk on College Avenue near Renfroe for more than a week. It’s filled with crap, including what looks like broken glass. If it’s yours, I wish you’d move it already. The only way around it is to step out into the street. THANK YOU.
I second that! Had to ride out on the street with baby on the back of the bike this week.
Waste totes AND bikes on the sidewalk! What’s a law abiding pedestrian to do?
I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets annoyed at this kind of thing. You can’t walk by Ujoint without dodging cars, motorcycles, bikes, baggo boards….
Dog owners, is it me or has there been more negativity from homeowners regarding your dog doing its business in their yard? Now first let me clarify I clean up after my pups. If was irresponsible then I would expect a bad reaction. I wouldn’t try to debate that.
One guy very politely asked me to not let me dogs pee one his plants because his wife worked really hard on them. Another guy was pretty nasty about it and said he didn’t care if I clean up. “It makes my yard dirty.” How you can keep a yard clean or why you want to is beyond me but I avoid it all the same. Plus I’ve seen signs going up. I even saw an article on Yahoo on the topic.
I’m happy to avoid these yards to try to be a good neighbor but I don’t see what the big deal is so long as the owner does the responsible thing and cleans up. Dog poop is nasty but it’s hardly the only nasty thing in your yard.
As a side note it’s funny that some folks seem to think the owner has total control over the dog’s elimination. Sorry but that’s just not the case. For whatever reason one of mine will one do his major business (trying to keep it G rated) on a walk. I have always chalked it up to some instinctual need to mark his territory.
There is a perfectly good strip of grass between the sidewalk and the road on my street. When I walk my dog, that’s where she goes. I try not to let my dog go on someone’s lawn as I think it is VERY rude and inconsiderate. Someone with their dog on a long retractable leash with the pooch doing his business in the middle of my yard? Even if it does get picked up – Not nice.
Why is it rude?
Because it doesn’t really all get picked up. Some small amount of dog poo will be left behind and the unsuspecting homeowner or their children might walk barefoot through it or sit on it.
Absolutely true. Now what do you do about the squirrels, cats, birds, rats, and other animals pooping in your yard?
Put leashes on ‘em.
I would hold a human to a higher standard of neighborliness than a squirrel.
Yeah the squirrels in my neighborhood blast Witch Doctor at all hours of the night!
I’m not trying to be snarky, but honest question…..If you are sitting on your front porch and relaxing, then someone comes up and lets his dog take a dump in the middle of your yard, you wouldn’t think that was rude?
That’s not snarky. I really am curious for honest opinions.
To answer your question: no, assuming the owner picks up after the dog it wouldn’t bother me. I can’t imagine any way that it affects me one way or the other.
Maybe I’m reading into your tone, but it seems as if you take it personally? Like maybe it is an act of disrespect? Or perhaps just the deep-rooted aversion to waste makes people feel as though your yard is sullied. I don’t know if I’m explaining that right but I could understand it.
LOL. I got a kick out of the “deep rooted aversion to waste” line. It’s nothing like that. I guess I don’t think it is ever truly all picked up…and if my kid runs around the yard, I’d prefer knowing that a bunch of dogs didn’t crap on it. Sure, a squirrel or other animal could have done so, but they are mostly wild and that is unavoidable.
As I say, I try to show people’s yards/property the same respect when I’m walking my dog. There is a perfectly good strip of grass near the street, so that fits the bill. Of course, if you don’t have a sidewalk and lack that median grass, I guess that is an issue.
Actually, i think it’s very very rude for you to let your dog pee or poop in my yard – first off, you can’t clean up the pee, and it is bad for the grass. Second of all, it’s my yard, and my property, so please be respectful of it. This is the same sentiment that parents have when their precious children can do no wrong — I love both children and dogs, and even those mangy cats who slink through my yard killing songbirds, but really, why should you even have to ask a question if this is rude? It’s just poor manners. Your dog can learn to use the grass by the sidewalk. Your kids can learn to sit tight and behave in a restaurant. These are taught behaviors, Squirrels are not the same as dogs, so please don’t compare them.
Absolutely not. With a bit of soy sauce and the appropriate treatments, you would have yourself the ultimate in local food:
http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/poop-burgers
At any given time science has proven that your kid has an 80% chance of being stickier, stinkier, and/or dirtier than my dog, and even though they try to clean up after you’ve left the restaurant booth before me, they can never really get rid of all of the sticky that kid has left behind.
NIMFY.
Honestly, I think there’s just some people in this world who don’t have enough to do.
“It makes my yard dirty”? Ummmm, so what’s that stuff your yard grows on? Oh, that would be DIRT.
Next thing ya know they’ll be complaining about sharing the air.
Perhaps only if the air contains millions of tiny dog poop particles.
Coincidentally, I was just coming here to post a rant about dog owners who let their dogs poop in my yard and don’t clean it up!
In all seriousness, does anyone have a suggestion about gently informing the many dog walkers who come by our house that we do not appreciate these gifts? I suspect that what happens is the folks who don’t take the leash law seriously don’t even realize that when their dogs run ahead of them, they are doing more than sniffing around.
I’m curious: is it just ignorance or are we all to polite to use the word “hookworm?” To me, that’s the major difference between dog poop and squirrel poop. Having caught them twice as a child, I know whereof I speak.
Dang! I meant “too.”
I’m an incoming Emory Ph.D. student hoping to move to Decatur in August. (No car, so I’m hoping to live within walking distance of the MARTA station.) Are there any resources (besides, say, Craigslist and Padmapper) that I can use to connect with local renters or landlords? It’d be great to rent from someone local, rather than a real estate management company.
Barring that, does anyone have experience with the Braden Fellman properties on Ponce de Leon Court?
Apologies if this isn’t in line with this forum’s purpose–if this is list abuse, please feel free to delete this comment.
Many thanks!
Welcome to Decatur… Emory has an online housing database.
Second the Emory housing database. That is how I found a great roommate several years ago. Should be lots of openings since most of the Emory students went home for the summer.
Welcome! I’ve rented from the Braden Fellman Group two of the three years I’ve been in Decatur. In short, I’ve had a pretty positive experience.
DM: Could forward my email address to Harry H? I’d be willing to provide some more detailed feedback and answer any specific questions. Thanks!
Welcome Harry! I’m an Emory PhD student as well. Once you get to the point where you are writing your dissertation, be aware that Decatur Metro will serve not only as a great place to get information about everytyhing happening in Decatur, but also as the best procrastination tool known to man.
i lived at the candler court for years and years in the mid to late 90s. loved it. it is older (no gym or pool or anything like that), but it is in the PERFECT location for a pedestrian life: 1 block from marta train station, small grocery etc. just googled and found the phone number and some pictures on another decatur blog.

happy hunting.
Also, there are tons of running groups (free) and cycling groups who meet up. I know Emory has a first-class gym, but, if you want to meet people and see Decatur, it’s a great way to get a work out and join the community.
I live at Talley Street Lofts, work at Emory, and am also a carfree individual.
I know there are a number of people renting units at Talley Street.
I lived there 15 years ago and rented from them. They are good people with an extensive maintenance staff. Great neighborhood.
Some homes in our neighborhood have apartments, and use Emory’s Off Campus Housing to list them when they’re available. https://housing.emory.edu/off-campus/home.cfm
Pines on Scott apartments at 927 Scott Boulevard, just east of the Clairmont/Scott intersection. Great access to MARTA, Emory bus, and only 1 mile walk to downtown Decatur and MARTA station. Manager lives on-site! They have both 1 and 2 bedroom units. I highly recommend Pines on Scott apartments.
Wow! Thanks for the warm welcome and all the advice, everyone! I’ll post a few more responses in-thread, but suffice to say I’m overwhelmed. I really appreciate it.
Can’t wait to join you all for happy hour!
Dog pee will kill plants. And if your dog is marking territory, every dog following along will pee on them as well. Poor plants can’t take all that.
Dog pee kills plants? First I’ve heard of that.
My only requirement is that people pick up waste. A little dog poop on a couple blades of grass (probably) won’t hurt anybody…or won’t hurt anything but delicate sensibilities.
It def kills roses. ..grumble grumble.. I have roses inside 2 corners of my fence but people think it’s ok to let their dog pee on my fence/thru it onto the roses and pee/poop on/around my mailbox.
When walking to the car in the morning sometimes I don’t look down because I assume people wouldn’t let their dog poop right infront of my car doors and not clean it up, but alas, at least once a week since Jan. I’m thinking about putting signs out it’s gotten so bad.
Does anyone have any reccomendations for tv antennas? We just ditched our cable and now our tv needs some bunny ears. I don’t want anything fancy just something that will pick up local channels. I’ve heard that some antennas do better than others depending on where you live geographically so I’m hoping some of you Decaturites have had luck with a particular brand/model.
Good tutorial on how to make your own from coathangers here: http://bit.ly/fs2bBv (And no, I haven’t done it myself yet). We get good reception just using cheap rabbit ears, but can’t get the PBS stations sadly.
I have had great luck with the channel master stealthtenna (you can google it). It is not overly large and was easy to mount in the attic.
Congrats on ditching your cable! I did it a year ago and rarely miss it. I purchased a Terk – Omnidirectional Amplified Indoor Digital HDTV Antenna at Best Buy and it works nicely. I am sure you can find one online for less.
cancelled cable service about 3 yrs ago now. however since then, still have gotten about 40-50 channels on the cable outlets in my house, up until about dec/jan. now it’s just the locals. but hey, until comcast blocks those i don’t need an antenna, granted i think i’ve watched non netflix/hulu on my tv possibly 2-3 hrs over the course of a year or so
Thanks Mike!
If rabbit ears inside don’t cut it, connect them outside to the co-ax cable junction box that remains in place. I just tossed ours into a hedge.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!
Harry – I highly recommend checking out the Braden Fellman property Ice House Lofts. It’s about two blocks from their Ponce office on Sycamore Place, next to Fellini’s. Funky lofts with many options on sizes/prices and easy walking distance to the square. I don’t know much about their other Decatur properties but, overall, the staff is very friendly and helpful.
If you prefer something not so open and modern, Candler Court Apts. are very nice also and even closer to the square.
Might want to read reviews of Ice House Lofts. They are really cute but I hear water leaks in when it rains due to a design flaw.
You might have a higher tolerance for dog waste than your neighbor. So what? You should still respect your neighbor enough not to do something in their yard that they object to.
Using your logic, I could throw dirt on your car because it would eventually get dirty anyway. That may be true, but it would still make me an awful neighbor.
Gutter cleaners. Anyone have a good one? I’ve got a difficult house for this (on a hill, steep roof line). And I’ve got a giant oak tree in the front yard that has produced many (many!) acorns and branches that need to be cleared out.
Thanks in advance.
I recently used Sunshine Window Cleaning and I was happy. They were fast but thorough, finding a big clog on a back gutter. If I recall, they charge by the linear foot, so you might want to have an approximate number for them when you call.
for the past few years we have used ian allum who happens to be a dekalb firefighter and has a gutter cleaning/pressure washing business on the side. he is AWESOME..professional, courteous, reasonable rates…his # is seven seven zero six eight two six two four two.
OK, don’t take this as snarky like someone who’s lawn was just peed or pooped on by your dog, but I have to ask a question because I can’t figure out why you did what you just did and I assume there must be a reason why you would abbreviate the word number (#) but then spell out the numbers. Like I said, I assume there’s a reason and I’m just too dumb or too many beers into happy hour(s) to figure it out!
i, too, am too many beers into happy hour (is that you over there?!) and i guess i just wanted to prove to myself that i could still spell the numbers.
What time did you people call happy hour, anyway, that you’re already half in the bag? I know it’s Friday, but it’s not even six o’clock yet! Jeez, I’ve got the wrong boss. Oh, wait a minute, I’m the boss. And the middle manager and the secretary and the custodian. Maybe that explains it.
Happy weekend!
Not complaining, hope it didn’t sound that way. (Just declared the work week over, so I can catch up!)
I’ve been known to start my happy hours much earlier than six o’clock. In that case I call them “my kids are driving me nuts and it’s time to self-medicate” hour.
+1
(starts around 3:30)
I think you mean…
plus-one
(starts around three thirty)
It’s always 5:00 somewhere!
I think you mean…
It’s always five o’clock somewhere!
u r fiesty 2day keith!
Under the traditional “9 to 5″ work day (that may or may not exist for you), the “happy hour” is the one that immediately follows the last work hour, so 5:00 – 6:00.
All bets are off on the weekend. I’ve heard it said once that “you can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning!”
Not a question of the right time, simply a question of the right drink. At least that’s what my sainted mother used to tell me.
What’s the best drink to have with lunch or in the early afternoon?
Hmmm….in the early afternoon a Pimms Cup or a G&T might be nice, especially after a set of tennis. With lunch, that would depend on what food you are serving, of course.
I attended a huge wine tasting at the GWCC many years ago where I was introduced to Sancerre. The fellow who was serving it called it “a great breakfast wine.” I thought it was a good line and was able to use it effectively later. My somewhat critical MIL was visiting. At dinner, she gave me a withering look and said, “Do you drink wine with every meal?” I replied, “Rarely with breakfast.” I still get a smug feeling of satisfaction about that answer. (Although our relationship has improved with thirty years of practice and a lot of growing up.)
Check out today’s kudzu for Atlanta Best Gutter Cleaners (I think that’s the name). Anyways, its a 54 percent discount off the normal price. I haven’t used them before, but I’m going to give them a try. Only 69 bucks I think…
Thanks y’all
More driving follies by two-wheeled vehicles: My wife was going east on Ponce and was stopped at the W Trinity light waiting on the no-turn-on-red to turn right onto W Trinity. She reports being passed on the right, in the bike lane, by a person on a motor scooter who proceeded to turn right on red. If an officer had seen that, I can think of at least three violations.
Chad?
Must have been some other scooter trash. I always follow posted signs. (Just like 4 wheeled conveyances.)

I love Thai Chili on the corner of Briarcliff and LaVista
We like Top Spice in Toco Hill.
I second Top Spice.
Garlic Thai on Ponce in Decatur.
Second here too, especially the soft shell crab.
Anybody else drinking a growler in the dark?

From: 8 Billion Reasons To Ask The Right Questions
I had to think for a minute when I read the press release about DeKalb’s Telephone Townhall Meeting (on the TIA), but it didn’t take long to deduce the meaninglessness of the reported results from a poll question. It shows a 2-to-1 preference for some I-20 train, but you can read the numbers however you want.
` A poll question during the call asked “Which is the more important
` transportation investment we could make in DeKalb County?”
` 26.4 percent of respondents voted for transit services that connect
` the Lindbergh train station to the Emory University/CDC area,
` 58 percent for transit service that expands train lines along the
` I-20 East corridor and 15.6 percent think neither is important.
It may mean that some I-20 train is a winner. It polled well. It garnered a strong response despite being less definite than its competitor.
It could mean that extending MARTA service to Emory/CDC is a winner for the region. A lot of residents picked it despite it being less centered in the county geographically. A lot of residents picked it despite it being, possibly: of greater service to non-residents, negatively associated with Emory/Emory-area, convenient to a small number of current full-time residents, and on tires not tracks.
Notes:
* Lindbergh to Emory/CDC “transit service” leans toward HRT (MARTA train). http://documents.atlantaregional.com/tia/pdf/TIA-M-028.pdf
* Decide for yourself whether “train lines along the I-20 East corridor” is a misrepresentation.

* Despite the large response population, demographics matter.
* I equate “neither is important” to “I choose not to choose.” We don’t know what those respondents thought.
