Darn, now I can’t remember what I was going to post yesterday…….
But does anyone besides me think it’s been a particularly good year for peaches? I often am disappointed and so am cautious about buying peaches–I hate them if they turn out mealy and not sweet. But every peach I’ve bought in the last month has been great, whether it’s been from the grocery store, Decatur Farmer’s Market, or peddler’s at my husband’s work.
Truth Stranger Than Fiction (careful how you spell)
“On the 19th of February, 1882, in a quarrel with James Cook, at Waverly, [Nebraska] over the spelling of the word “pedlar,” [Quin Bohanan] killed Cook. He was tried and sentenced to the penitentiary for life, but after serving a short part of his time, he succeeded in getting a new trial. The result was far from being what he expected, for the jury brought in a verdict of murder in the first degree, and he was sentenced to be hanged.
“He was confined in the Otoe county jail, awaiting some further judicial proceedings, his case having been appealed to the United States Supreme Court [who had accepted the appeal on the issue of double jeopardy]; but on the 22d day of June, 1887, he escaped, and has since succeeded in eluding the officers, spurred on as they are by a heavy reward.”
Whoa. But, yes, the peaches have been great. (Spelling very carefully.)
Speaking of peaches, is it possible to buy organic peaches? I assumed those at the Decatur Farmer’s market were organic, but they said they use pesticides only on the trees that need it and never when the fruit is on the tree.
My understanding is that it is nearly impossible to grow organic peaches in GA–especially in a farm setting.
Whole Foods on Briarcliff has organic peaches – not sure if they are GA or SC, though. They were delicious!
I bought some organic SC peaches from a vendor at the Atlanta Food Truck Park on Howell Mill a couple of weeks ago. The vendor told me there were no organic GA peaches.
Agree. They reminded me of car trips through Georgia in the 1960s with the family, seven of us, and stopping at a roadside stand, and slurping down incredibly flavorful peaches. Then getting back into the car all sticky and sweet, continuing on toward New Jersey.
I’ve only bought from the Wednesday afternoon market, the aroma alone is worth the price.
The Fort Valley, Georgia peaches from the ELF Market have been delicious the past 2 weeks.
+1
This next weekend (6/30) is Peachapalooza at ELF, come on down.
Dinner at Harbour House last night was wonderful. We loved the decor, the cocktails, and the shrimp and oysters. Service was friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back.
I assume you mean the place on Church St.
Is there another Harbour House or did I get the name wrong?
i believe it’s called harbour bar & fish house…
A while back there were some suggestions in FFAF about good places to sell gold. I believe one was a jewelry store in downtown Decatur, but now I can’t find the information. Anyone know the place?
Both Decatur City Jewelers and Worthmore buy gold. I have not had experience with either.
Alexia next to Jimmie Johns buys gold and I had a great experience with them. They used the credit for the gold they purchased from me against a repair I wanted done and gave me the balance in cash. Meanwhile they cleaned all the jewelery I was wearing for free and sent me on my way. Everything worked out perfectly and I was satisfied!
+1 on Alexia!
Did employers from the area request skipping the FFA-Friday timing in hopes of increasing productivity?!
Had a great time at the Brick Store 15 year anniversary today (Sunday) from 2:00 to 4:00. Some highlights were to get to know one of the BS owners, local banker Judy Turner and a picture with one of the Asian Cajun twins. Wow! And it all benefited the DeKalb Historical Society. Great music, food, cocktails, and the new art addition to the BS is a great piece! Nice work Brick Store guys.
How about that country ham?
FFAS? I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone.
