My beautiful daughter is now a high school graduate! Where did the time go?
congrats to your daughter and all the new DHS graduates!
So long and all the best. It’s been interesting.
What?! Where the heck are you going? We have a 20MPH plan to tackle! Also, many of your comments are like brain teasers for me– and I’m hooked!
Thanks, Deanne. I’m not sure my intentionally coded remarks outnumber the accidentally cryptic ones, so I hope I didn’t waste too much of your energy in deciphering them.
I’m feeling the pinch of summer’s distractions on top of my full plate. I won’t be keeping current enough to comment regularly.
Bobby- I like reading your comments because you always set out to contribute something interesting. You seem very knowledgeable on some of these topics– so much so that I often feel like I walked in midway through a discussion and missed the basic introductory stuff! Maybe it’s just two different ways of relaying things… Anyway, it makes me think, and I always enjoy something new to mull over! Have a fun summer, and please pop in occasionally! It’ll be a nice surprise! :0)
Where are the best places in Decatur to hang flyers for a rock concert? Decatur CD and the venue (Rail) are obvious, but are there any other places where people hang flyers?
I see tons of fliers at Mellow Mushroom and Melton’s App & Tap.
Mellow Mushroom is my window of choice to find out who is playing town.
Thanks for the great suggestions!
Kavarna is also good……
Twains.
Firehouse Guitars and Melton’s will post flyers.
Java Monkey.
I’m looking for recommendations for an arborist…we have a beautiful old pecan tree that doesn’t seem to be doing as well as we’d like and I *really* don’t want to take it down unless there’s no other choice.
Thanks!
You can’t go wrong with Arborguard. They’re the tree-huggingest bunch of arborists in the state.
Jon Frederiksen of TreeWorks 404-379-1700. He is a certified arborist and lives locally. He also has done subcontracting for several other local tree people. Great guy. I recommend him.
Also recommend recommend Arborguard.
My mother says spring isn’t here until the pecans put on new growth. It would not be unusual for yours to be behind other trees.
Thanks everyone!
Tom L- We’ve lived with our beautiful pecans for 8 years now, so I’m pretty used to their Different From Other Trees schedule…this old girl just doesn’t seem happy
Jon took down a tree for us- great job!
Does anyone know if the pavillion in Glen Lake Park has an outlet? Thinking about renting it for a summer party.
Hi Heather, it does, but you need to be sure to tell them that you’re planning on using it so that they turn on the power. Great place for a party!
Does anyone else leave their mouse dangling to the left side of the screen and scroll up or down using arrow or page keys? And then slow down or pause your scrolling as the cursor hits the tag cloud to see how it starts spinning and then change direction up or down?
No? Yeah, me neither.
HA!
Arts Festival! Arts Festival! Arts Festival!
Woo-hoooo! last day of schoooooool!!!
It must be a holiday weekend. There are way fewer FFAF comments than usual today.
They’re all fighting on the El Tesoro post
Ha!
Has anyone got a home energy evaluation done by these Well Home people ? http://www.wellhome.com/ I saw an advertisement in Decatur Living for $99. I wonder if it’s worth it.
Never used them but if you are a Georgia Power customer, it will do a free energy audit for you.
Wow, do you know how to get that GA Power deal? Is there a link or something? (Would this be comparable to what they offer?)
http://www.georgiapower.com/residential/checkup_request.asp Not sure how comparable they are but free is free. A good place to start.
The Most Interesting Man in the World (his cardboard cut out) is still missing from prom– if you know of his whereabouts, please encourage his return to the Matador, no questions asked!!
Also, there was a pair of shoes left at prom that we would like to return to their owner- are they yours?!
cinderella…are you out there?
Wow, do you know how to get that GA Power deal? Is there a link?
Does anyone know why it smells like fresh-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies on DeKalb Ave near Radial Cafe every weeknight, around 8-ish? It’s wonderful and charming, but it’s the pits for my waistline.
There’s a pie factory across the tracks.
The wonderful smell comes from Schwan’s. I will never forget the day I asked my grandmother what was in her cookies and she told me she did not know because the Schwan’s man delivered the dough.
Can anyone recommend a local company that does new counter tops and kitchen back splashes? Some one that you’ve had or know someone who has had work done and were happy with quality and price? I’m looking to re do my kitchen counter tops and back splash and don’t know where to start. Thank you so much
Trish Allen is a neighbor. Intown Design Inc. 4/812-3820.
My go to place for kitchen and bathroom counter tops is Atlanta Kitchen, Inc, A Construction Resources, Inc. Company located at 196 Rio Circle, Decatur, Ga near the DeKalb Farmers Market.
They have a great show room where you can make your selection. Also they have small slabs for smaller projects that you can use to save money. Ask for Paul Reckamp, someone who will give you great service and advice. It’s nice to have such a place close to Decatur and not have to go into the no man’s land of Jimmy Carter Blvd .
I also patronized this Rio Circle business, but for a new kitchen floor. The workmen were WONDERFUL, my floor looks GREAT, and I couldn’t be more pleased with this particular company. They have a huge selection of kitchen countertops, too.
The workmen were very sweet, finished quickly and their work was impeccable.
Anybody aware was is going on at the gas station at church and east ponce? I see construction.
A new station is going in. According to the city, they will be friendlier and also have pumps for scooters. Also will have a market to grab essentials.
The city said “they will be friendlier”? I thought Han was a cool dude if you actually took the time to talk to him. German was very friendly also.
this is great news! I was hoping someone would grab it before the period set by the city expired and the property wouldn’t be able to be used as a gas station anymore!
Social contract question: What is the “neighborly” time one can start using power lawn gear (mower, blower, etc.) on weekend mornings? When I was growing up, you never messed with people before 10 but, based on the past few weekends, that’s apparently not a universal standard.
Whdaya’ll think?
i think 9am is acceptable as a general rule..but we also have kids so we are up and at ‘em earlier than some folks are.
I would also suggest 9:00 but sounds like you need to have a conversation with your neighbor. The heat wave may have motivated him to get an earlier start time.
If he were my neighbor, I might ask him, “You do your own yard work? You must be an old school Decatur boy. How about coming over later today after I finish my yard work, have a cold Co-Cola, and trash talk all these youngins’ moving in the neighborhood that hire lawn services.”
Anyone have a recommendation for a place to sell gold and silver. I’ve decided to sell all my old gold and silver jewelry and I’ve heard so many horror stories that I’m a bit afraid to just go anywhere.
The Decatur-Dekalb YMCA Soccer Club is holding open tryouts for the fall 2011 Academy season. My son plays there and I highly recommend the program. Here’s the details if anyone is interested:

TESTIMONIAL: Thanks to Kick In The Fit for their sponsorship of Decatur Metro and Free-For-All Fridays. I am a past winner of a free month of KITF. (May). What a great group of instructors and participants!! Never a dull moment
I highly recommend this program!
What a great way to KICK start a work out routine!
i’d like to give a giant shout out to decatur active living for their children’s festival yesterday…they teamed up with decatur first baptist and i thought it was one of the best…everything was spread out..there were tons of options and lots of happy kids!
Just got told to ”move my bike” very nicely by dpd. I see a year ago post, but this is not an etiquette question. Does the city (or state) have an ordinance (not zoning) regulating bicycle parking? Should alternative bike parking be required for festivals?
dlb: Gold & Coin Exchange in Marietta at 1185 Cobb Pkwy N. I too heard the horror stories and held onto my tin of broken, tacky 80′s gold (why God why did I still have so many herringbone necklaces with the kinks in them). I had almost tossed it many times in the past decade but left it in the bottom drawer being the pack rat that I am. Then a family friend told me she took hers to this place and walked out with $1,200.00 and I thought, yeah right, she must have had a wheelbarrow full of it. She said you could take it in, let them sort and test it and they would give you a quote and you could choose to sell or take your stuff and walk out so I took a road trip one Saturday and gave it a shot. I didn’t feel like I had very much but was hoping for a couple hundred bucks spending money for a beach trip. I walked out of there with $2,300.00 and could not believe it. All that for broken chains and tacky earrings I haven’t worn in 20 plus years. I did have a couple rings with stones I wanted to keep and maybe set in silver down the road and they removed my stones and gave them to me. They do everything right in front of you so there is no worry that they took your stuff to the back and did a switcharoo. They are also open on Sundays. Good Luck! I had a great vacation, paid some bills and stashed some in the savings account with mine. I told my husband he could never make fun of me for “saving” junk again!
