Decatur Residents To Vote on Sunday Alcohol Sales in November
Decatur Metro | May 16, 2011The Decatur City Commission voted unanimously and without comment last night to add a referendum to the November ballot that would allow liquor sales at retail establishments on Sunday inside the Decatur city limits, if approved by voters.

Liquor? I barely even know her.
groan.
But – there are no liquor stores in the city limits.
Liquor, in this case, is a generic term that means “alcoholic beverage.”
I know that. But what I’m saying is that unless Decatur starts issuing licenses to liquor stores, it will only open up beer and wine sales in the city – at the Kroger and the convenience stores. Unless Dekalb County votes the same way, all the liquor stores on Decatur’s borders (on Clairmont, Scott Blvd, College Ave. – which are all outside Decatur’s ~4 square miles) will still be closed on Sundays.
That’s true, but I guess I don’t get your point. We’re all well aware of these facts. I, for one, would like to see Sunday prohibition struck down at once, but I will happily accept the gradual demise of this prohibition to the status quo.
I should add that the wording of this blog is extremely misleading.
OK, I’ll change it to “alcohol”. What else is “extremely misleading” about it?
“the November ballot that would allow liquor sales at retail establishments on Sunday inside the Decatur city limits, if approved by voters.”
Taken at face value, this would suggest that the children’s book store might be allowed to sell liquor.
Awesome idea Jeff. I certainly hope voters approve selling liquor at children bookstores on Sundays. I for one will be much more excited about storytime!
Well, if they obtained a liquor license, they could, right?
We could call it” cocktails and fairy tales”
Twice the Fun! Little Shop of Suds!
Wait, better: Little Shop of Stoli!
For the win!
Why, thank you, Cuba (blushing.)
Al, as far as I’m concerned, it’s the principle of the thing. The law banning Sunday alcohol sales is a remnant blue law. Blue laws were enacted to restrict activities and sale of goods on Sunday to accommodate the Christian Sabbath. Thanks to the principles on which this nation was founded and has managed not to founder (so far), Christians are free to observe their Sabbath as they see fit. However, it goes completely against those same principles to compel everybody else to conform to those observances. Arguments about economic impacts and public health implications are straw men; the real issue is whether or not individuals are comfortable letting Christian doctrine set public policy. I’m not. We all know there are no liquor stores in Decatur, and if Dekalb County stays dry on Sundays, then in practical terms little will have changed vis a vis hard liquor (and I’m partial to gin, myself). IMO, that’s beside the point (and extremely unlikely).
+1
I’m sure this has been addressed, but, is the drive through liquor store almost at corner of Sam’s Crossing (bridge) and College not within City? Sorry if this has already been established.
What about the Decatur Package Store?
As Harry Doyle might say, that’s juuuuuust a bit outside!
They shouldn’t be allowed to sell books on Sundays.
Agreed; NO BIBLES ON SUNDAY!!! I say that Sunday is MY day and I don’t want to sale of bible’s disrupting my secular lounging day.
Yeah, what he said! Cheers to all you Beer Thumpers!
This should be a movement.
I’m pretty sure I want no part of any movement produced by a walrus…eeewwww.
hatetohonk & klauson- I guess you didn’t realize that though you have changed your name 3 times, the little design next to it stays the same. It’s safe to say you haven’t changed your opinion from the Sunday sales topic on the previous page, or your debate tactics.
lighten up, Francis…
Not sure they need to lighten up. Name changing is generally troll-ish behavior.
Then I’ll gladly leave you kids to your own smug, intolerant fun. Way to stay neutral, moderator.
Sorry to disappoint, but I’ve never been neutral about comment trolls.
And I wasn’t necessarily calling you one, but attempting to clarify why you were being called out for changing your name and providing you with an opportunity to explain why you had done so.
Don’t worry, he WILL be back…And by his avatar we will know him…unless he figures out that gravatar thing

I’m actually light, but thanks for your concern.
I probably wouldn’t have said anything or even noticed honestly, but the barrage of personal insults, minus an actual argument, was pretty noticeable.
Maybe you have a legitimate argument, but I doubt it. Why? You have a forum to express it, but instead of doing so and attempting to persuade us, you’re just passing around insults. This is usually the go-to tactic of someone who doesn’t have a legitimate argument, and just wants to get something started.
There was a point in history when you’d catch hell if you didn’t show up at church on Sunday and get some wine, and only the clergy could get their hands on the bible, which was printed and repeated in a language that no one understood. That’s the kind of social conservatism I could get behind.
Plan ahead. Buy your alcohol on Saturday. No sales on Sunday is charming.
Well, that settles it. NO referendum.
MyNameIsNotSusan: No, the liquor store on East College Avenue is not in the city limits. It’s just past the line.
Thanks. Thought the line ended at the bridge.
