Briarcliff/Moreland @ Ponce Done Got Restriped
Decatur Metro | May 8, 2011 | 8:20 pmAll you in-town (uh…Midtown?) commuters probably already know about this, but for folks who do more casual traveling down Ponce, Briarcliff or Moreland into Atlanta, you might be interested in this. From the Springdale Elementary website, which notes that this was completed a week ago …
The left northbound lane on Moreland will be converted to a left turn only and the arrow signal will remain. One left northbound lane on Briarcliff will be converted to a southbound left turn lane – leaving one northbound and two southbound through lanes. An arrow signal will also be added to the southbound left turn from Briarcliff to Ponce. Span wire signs will be eventually added over Moreland at the bottom of the hill to show lane designations ahead. A new crosswalk will go in at St. Charles Place and Briarcliff. Left turn only striping will be added on Briarcliff and Moreland.
Wonder how it’s workin’ out. (Once upon a time, I tried traveling south on Briarcliff every morning. Lord, was this intersection a dangerous mess.)
Very interested to see if this works. I’m glad they are actively trying to come up with creative solutions. The recent re-stripings around town have been uplifting to see. Not sure if this will be effective or not but hope so.
I did a casual bike ride yesterday and very much enjoyed the re-striping. It was accompanied by a dedicated left-turn lane on Briarcliff heading south. The timing is very brief, but long enough so a bike in that lane can easily get onto the Ponce de Leon access road.
All I can say is it was very luxurious. It used to be very dangerous to make that left. There was no dedicated lane, and no light, so the only way to make the left was into traffic, hoping that the guy in the left-side lane would not be making his left and the guy in the right-side lane could be seen over the left-hand lane and wouldn’t be speeding up at that moment.
Yes, it further inconveniences cars going north from Moreland, but not by much, since they were previously stuck behind the left-hand lane (which is now striped as a left-turn lane). Some signs over the road at Fairview pointing this out would help those going north know what’s coming.
Otherwise great job.
About time! Now that traffic will be flowin’ I’ll be flying be white underwear dude on the corner!
Ha ha ha…you mean Spandex man? I was at a halloween party once where someone was dressed as him!
Love the green arrow on Briarcliff…it’s about time!!
Not Spandex man. That is Mr. D.
Actually, it’s Big D.
Hey Sarah – If the party you went to was about 5 years ago or so then I know the guy who was dressed like that. A good friend of mine may well be the culprit. He and his girlfriend and I and my wife took a dance class and he showed up dressed like that on his way to a Halloween party. We laughed our ballet shoes off!
Could be that small of a world, I guess.
Interesting. There used to be a hand-made sign begging for a left-turn signal for briarcliff south turning left onto ponce at that intersection. Also, commuter dude looked into once and was told traffic counts didn’t justify a left-turn signal (probably b/c people took other routes or gave up!). Sounds like it may have been the Springdale PTA that finally got it done! I imagine it will cause a back-up on Moreland. Time will tell whether this causes even more problems than it fixed.
Yes, interested to see if a slew of turn error beaters cause a bunch of accidents at that intersection. Hopefully not.
Here’s Commuter Dude’s story about it.
